Natoma Dairy. Natoma Dairy Spur at Silver Lake was installed under
AFE C-643 of May 1918. Length 392 feet. Switch of spur located
on siding, located 732 ft west of west end of depot.
Spur extended 76 feet Dec of 1920. Apparently switch was moved to
open Third Street and North Street.
Spur removed entirely Oct 1932.
Stove and Range Foundry Spur
Spur installed under AFE A-658 Dec 1915.
Spur track to serve the stove and range foundry recently erected by Graf Stove
and Range Co at Silver Lake.
(Length of spur not stated in AFE. Also cannot find actual location
nor when it was removed. Quite likely just a short distance
west of Natoma Spur and the spur to Boyle Ice Co.)

Wood cabooses were discontinued in large numbers in
late 1973 and in 1974. Some were kept for use by switch crews
in larger terminals such as Duluth-Superior, Mpls-StPaul , and
in Chicago. Some of those lasted to late 70s and into 1981-1984.
I bought mine in Feb of 1974.

Hello,
Without trying to cover all the questions, I need to clear up
one thing regarding the 99065.
It was involved in the infamous "number swap" of 1973-74
in this case with DSSA 580. The original 580 was at the Colfax
museum numbered 99065. If the ACI label is still there, check
it out. On the left side of the label the numbers are there.
I believe it starts with 9-482-000580-7. 9 turns it on, 482 is Soo,
000580 is the number and 7 turns off. The 9 and the 7 may be
transposed.
The actual 99065 still exists, may still be in Twin Lakes, Wis
where it was in Apr 1996 being restored. I also say it in Clinton
Wis in Sep 1990. The cupola is the original, located way to
one end. Only real changes would be one window removed on
one side. The other side still had all 4 windows.
The Soo did give it a steel underframe Nov 4, 1927 at
Stevens Point. What they did with the cabooses was to put
the entire wood underframe on top of a steel underframe
resulting the caboose being raised. The original only had
two steps but the steel underframe resulted in 3 treads
needed to reach the platform.
Carbody length per diagram is 27' 6 1/2 " over sills (carbody)
and 32' 6 1/2" over end beams. These cabooses were the
only series that had the, my description, "antelope" style
ladders.
99046 to 99095.
The DSSA 580, number swap 99065, was built by the Soo
in 1924 at Shoreham.
Sorry, I did pay any attention to the truss rods.

Dennis:
Two Questions as it pertains to Soo Line Cabooses:
1. What was the color of the Soo's Cars before the Great Depression?
From period photographs, it appears the cars were a "Dark Red",
described to me as being much darker than ordinary Caboose Red. Also, it
appears that the ownership initials don't start appearing until about
1927. It also appears that the full railroad name is used on the letter
boards prior to 1930---"Minneapolis, Saint Paul and Sault Ste. Marie"
and if memory serves, "Ste." is spelled out as "Sainte".
2. What are the overall demensions of the Haskell & Barker cars
before rebuilding? These cars look like a neat project. That Cupola
might give fits, though.

99065. I show two truss rods, each 25" from the centerline of the car
and 14" below the sheathing on the underside of the floor framing,
essentially the same as the bottom of the sides. The center sill is
built up of two 10" channels, spaced 19" over the outside of the
outward facing flanges. The crossbears are tapered pressed metal
parts, 5" deep at the edge of the car, tapering to 10" deep where
they meet the center sills. Since the queenposts attach slightly
closer to the wide end than the midpoint, 6" queenposts with their
bases angled to match the taper would put the rods 14" below the
floor. The queenposts are spaced 6'-10" apart. The 8"x12" brake

Hello Val,
Your questions got me going about other records I have. Am including
one more map
of my own, previously drawn from excerpts of company records and
information.
However, mileposts I now realize may be off. About 1915, between 1913 and
1917, were
relocated about 2 1/2 miles increasing. Starting point in Chicago was from
a different point.
Some of my records are from older records and others added from later
documents.

Val,
Sorry, I do not have any diagrams of the spur south of
Camp Lake nor the one at Oetting Spur. From an old timetable
it does indicate an ice spur called Oetting Ice Spur at MP 59.
No idea what side of the main track nor the length though.
In looking for the above I do notice that Wheatland did have
two additional spurs running off of the siding but am not able to
determine just where. An estimate woule be about 1200 to
1500 feet east of MP 66 would be the switch and the spur
of 448 ft long running to the west. There was a loading platform
located on that spur. The railroads term for the switch points
is the "headblock". The headblock for that spur was at
footage 347200. An estimate from a point I do know, that is
Milepost 61 being 322080, add 5 miles to that comes to
348480. On survey charts it is stated as 3220+80.
The chart I have for that spur is from 1926 and I have no
further information on it.
This loading platform would quite likely not be a Soo Line
structure but belong to an industry .

First up, Midwest milk traffic is on a par with the Lost Dutchman Mine. We know it
was there, a little bit was documented (I can't imagine there isn't scads in the
Wisconsin or Illinois historical societies and university collections), but much
waits to be discovered.
"A year ago, Jack Nienhaus recollected that Soo #18 would pick up reefers of
milk at Neenah shipped by Galloway West."
First, were these actually reefers or bulk tank cars that look like reefers?
The biggest demand in Chicago was for Grade A (drinking) milk, and most
producers for this market were early (1920s) converts to the large-capacity bulk
tankers. Can cars basically disappear from this market in the late teens however
Soo still had some older baggage cars assigned to milk service in 1929.
Freight reefers were used to move butter, eggs and cheese, and often canned
milk as insulated boxcars, but they didn't move at passenger train speeds as they
lacked the brakes, high-speed trucks, steam and signal lines etc.
We do know that Galloway-West leased high-speed tank cars from GeneralAmerican Pfaudler and used these to move ice cream mix to the John T.
Cunningham Ice Cream Co. located on West Van Buren Street. This was
offloaded into tank trucks at the Soo Line Terminal. G-W also produced
powdered and condensed milk products under the Fonda name.
Bowman (later acquired by Dean's) also shipped fluid milk over the Soo Line.
"I assume that the cars were picked up for the return trip. Is this true?"
The general consensus is that empty milk cars went home on freight trains.
These were single purpose cars, and there was no backhaul cargo. Typically,
producers would lease a minimum of three cars; one unloading in the city, one
coming home, one at home loading.
"Does anyone know of any other places that milk cars were set out in Chicago, or
if milk cans were taken to the depots (IC or Grand Central) for pickup there?"
The lion's share of fluid milk traffic came in on the CNW and CB&Q, however at
its peak, milk came in by rail from six states, including southwestern lower
Michigan and northwestern Indiana. Can traffic faded very fast after WWI, even
on the suburban lines, as trucks began making a huge dent in it.
I think Galloway West was a broker who bought up milk that was used in making
candy, bread, etc. and not for drinking.
See above – Galloway did bottle fluid milk (A) for the local market at Fond du
Lac. Chicago did consume a lot of Grade B (any milk with an "off" color, smell or
flavor that could be hidden in other products) but the supply was highly variable
from day to day, and no farmer would intentionally produce Grade B as dairies
paid less for it. You also don't want it contaminating a load of Grade A, so it was
handled separately. Tankers did have space in the center where cans of B and
cream were carried if needed.

The next day, Jan 20, 1936, same thing with GPEX 719
between Chgo and Mukwonago on No 1 and returned that night
on No 2 loaded.
Milk Tanks came out of Nichols on the Argonne Line train
connecting at Neenah. Nos 66-67 made good connections with
Nos 1 and 2 at Neenah.
Some other cars in this service were BOWX 105, 109, 111,
and 115 which were milk tanks. Soo milk cars in 2600 and
4200 series were handled but these were for milk cans. Also
a UDX 787 was for milk cans.
Barron shipped out milk in milk tanks and also in Soo cars
for milk cans.
It appears the milk tanks were returned on No 1 and some
Soo milk cars also for Mukwonago and Fond du Lac but to
other stations would have been handled on freight trains.
No 1 and No 17 did not handle mty milk cars for other stations
during Jan of 1936.
Of interest also, during October of 1935, many passenger
extras were run with just milk cars, handling 4 to 14 cars,
both ways between Fond du Lac and Chgo.

A little clarification is in order.
Train Order signals, Interlocking Signals, and ABS
Automatic Block Signals had nothing to do with each other.
Train Order signals are just that. It indicates either
train orders or no train orders and a clearance is required
unless the signal is green(clear). Train order signals are
either 3 position or 2 position. The 3 position signals were
either semaphore or color light. Green clear, Yellow pick up
orders without stopping, or Red stop for orders.
The two position boards were a banner type that was
turned "across" the track for stop or parallel to the track
for clear. When parallel as seen from a train all could be
seen was the edge of the banner. These were day indications,
a lamp added for night with red both ways or green both ways.
It could not be separated for direction.
On the Soo, two types were most commonly used, a Nunn
or a Clark. There were others, National or Swift for example,
the National had been used on the Fairmount & Veblen Ry
which is the Soo's Veblen Line.
The Semaphore Signals had an arm and signal for each
direction. The earlier semaphore signal on the Soo was a
Harrington two position signal with a wood post. It was a
Lower Quadrant signal with stop being horizontal and clear
being hanging down. On the Soo this changed with the 1912
rule book being replaced with the more familiar Upper Quadrant
and 3 positions.
Train Order signals required a clearance but did not
require a train order. They were used for a Manual Block
system. An operator could not just clear a board after
stopping a train to release it. A clearance on the board
was necessary stating the order numbers or "No Orders".
The Nunn and Clark signals were still common on branch
lines right up until the end of Timetable and Train Order
Operation. To display a Yellow or "19" indication, a
yellow flag in the day or a yellow lantern was hung from
the banner when displaying stop.
The old Form 31 was discontinued and a Form 19 was
used even when restricting a train and if signatures were
required they were taken on the form 19.
INTERLOCKING SIGNAL
Interlocking signals were meant to protect a crossing
of another railroad and it granted just permission to
cross the other railroad or to hold back. It had nothing
to do with the track beyond the crossing. The Home Signal
was right near the diamond and a Distant Signal some distance
back gave a warning. Some Distant Signals were operating
and changed to give green, yellow, or red depending on the
indication of the Home Signal. Others were Non-Operating
and were a fixed Yellow and never changed.
A manual block system, with signals controlled by an
operator, usually in a tower was a different situation
entirely. These signals did not require a clearance to
pass a yellow or red. The Soo did not have this type of
system.
AUTOMATIC BLOCK SYSTEM OR ABS
Was just that - automatic. Control was by track
occupancy, no human involvement. It could be used in
Timetable and Train Order control or in Centralized
Traffic Control (CTC).

They are separate. But train orders could and were used for blocking train, if not
on Soo Line, on other railroads by CCOR.
I recall getting signatures on form 19s, work order form 19s, like Gross Turn and
others that were work orders. If a train/crew got done ahead of a 12 our order
(work order) we had to get signatures of engineer and conductor releasing their
authority.
As a kid on CNW hanging out in towers, in 4-track main line "Route of the 400"
(something Milw Rd and Soo never experienced) blocks were established by
rules and not using train order signals , either.
Various signal systems were not connected to each other.
CTC was not a machine, but a an authorized territory. On Soo Line
dispathers operated CTC machines. On CNW there was little CTC territory. on
Milw Rd, operators at Shermer IL, Roundout IL, Sturdevant WI, etc actually (in
1960s and 1970s) ran CTC, and had instruction books, where they were given
CTC instructions from Milw Rd dispatchers.

and location y and it was entered in a book similar to a train dispatchers train
order book, but was instructions to operators to run train thru their CTC

Old Soo station numbers start from Minneapolis Lowry Ave N.
MP 1. MP 0 is at 4th Ave North at old Soo freight depot.
For the old numbering system it was a combination letters and
numbers.
Camden Place is MP 3, where it splits, east to Sault Ste Marie
numerically by miles. Shoreham was 3 and Sault Ste Marie 494.
West from Camden Place an alpha prefix was included. Camden Place
M3, Glenwood M120, Portal M549.
Lines that branched off those main lines had an alpha prefix
and numbers started from the junction point. Noyes line was the
"G" line and Noyes was G265.
For the WC trackage, the Soo started their distance from
Boom Island Yard for some odd reason and then the station number
had an alpha suffix. The first station that shows up in the
book east of Minneapolis is Carnelian Jct, about 30 miles from
Boom Island with station number 30C. New Richmond was 50C and
these distances were via the old line, portions removed after 1911!
Schiller Park was 456C and Chgo 476C.
Lines branching off the Mpls-Chgo main line started the
number from the junction point and had a letter suffix.
Example, Ashland was 146A.
In the early 1940's this alpha-numeric system was changed
to all numbers but each line was a different number series.
Mpls-Sault Ste Marie became the 1000 line. Minneapolis was
1000, Shoreham 1003, Sault Ste Marie 1494. The west line
was the 4000 line with Camden Place 4003, Glenwood 4120,
and Portal 4549. The Noyes line became the 5000 line and
Noyes was number 5265.
For the Mpls-Chgo line the numbers started with zero.
Carnelian Jct became 0030, New Richmond 0050, Schiller Park 0456,
Chicago 0476,(this was actually Throop Street). Additional
numbers in the Chicago area were added for different junction
points and etc. In the example, the Ashland line became the
3000 line and Ashland became 3146, 146 miles from Spencer.
Still the same numbers figuring distances but with a
number prefix instead of a letter prefix or suffix.
Mileposts were measured on the old Soo with MP 1 at
Lowry Ave in north Minneapolis and all distances are stated
as from Lowry Ave. It is interesting trying to figure what
route they used to come with a milepost at some branch line
points. Example, on the Plummer Line, the numbers start from
Lowry Ave to Brooten, east to Moose Lake, and then west to
the station in question.
On the WC, the mileposts start from Chicago Psgr station
but I am unable to determine exactly where. Forest Park
becomes MP 11. Going west, the Carnelian Jct example is
at 428.4. There was no prefix or suffix for mileposts.
The mileposts were even numbers but in the timetable the
milepost location was stated to the tenth of a mile for
stations. This was generally where the depot used to be.
Some locations, after the depots were removed, had the
station sign re-located between siding switches.
As in most everything, there are exceptions. The
Nekoosa line used to be number distances from Chicago
but at some point the mileposts were changed to read from
Marshfield.
This doesn't answer all the questions but gives an
idea how it came about.

Hello Val,
As mentioned, I found a few items for your historical society.
Finally got them together.
The listings sheets for Trevor, Camp Lake, Silver Lake, and Wheatland
are Company Records from the Engineering Dept. Attempting to keep a
listing of all physical changes to property - adding or subtracting.
The listings are interesting in every shack or structure that is listed.
As mentioned in prior letter, location numbers are two types.
Chainage Station. A surveying term. 3273+60 at Milepost 62.
It means 327,360 feet from a point in Chicago. Also 62 miles from same
point.
Another one, on a few maps, +3167 on map of Silver Lake.
It is described as Ends of Covered Platform (Silver Lake Depot)
It means 3167 feet west of previous milepost. (Looking in directions of
increasing mileposts, or west in this case.)
As before, any questions - don't hesitate to ask.

As mentioned, I found a few items for your historical society.
Finally got them together.
The listings sheets for Trevor, Camp Lake, Silver Lake, and Wheatland
are Company Records from the Engineering Dept. Attempting to keep a
listing of all physical changes to property- adding or subtracting.
The listings are interesting in every shack or structure that is listed.
As mentioned in prior letter, location numbers are two types.
3273+60 at Milepost 62.
Chainage Station. A surveying term.
It means 327,360 feet from a point in Chicago. Also 62 miles from same
point.
Another one, on a few maps,
+3167 on map of Silver Lake.
It is described as Ends of Covered Platform (Silver Lake Depot)
It means 3167 feet west of previous milepost. (Looking in directions of
increasing mileposts, or west in this case.)
