SNIPPETS of SALEM
774C - WHERE WE LIVE,
WHAT WE WERE
and
WHAT WE ARE
By Linda Valentine
0-329 pages
Material I created to build the WKCHS Facebook Page with Images from the Valentine Digital Collection and Notes. Some
contributed comments are retained with authorships.
This booklet is the material that had been posted to the Historical Society Facebook page by Linda Valentine in the
beginning 2012 thru 2015 and was mixed in with society projects and news.
I was asked to write a book and it appears that I created one by creating chapters for hamlets and topics that made us
"who we are" and "where we live". It wasn’t written as a reference book nor as an authority on the subject. It was written
casually for a casual read with enough information and hints for a researcher to pursue on their own accord, those areas
of most interest.
After this material was copied, it was deleted from the Facebook pages. Between the time that this photo/comment project
was started and until this off loading, Facebook had made several changes regarding privacy, copyright and ability to
search. The changes did not reflect on my need to be able to control the page or the information on it and so, as the
author, I decided to remove my material. Information freely offered on the public page that was important to future
researches has been retained with their names as author.
Linda Valentine, the originator of the page and the author of the material and the provider of the digital images, felt that
Facebook was more about controlling all content than as an outlet for information. Never, did Linda Valentine agree to
Facebook authority in copyright. This document however, is copyrighted by Linda Valentine and cannot be reproduced for
any profit or placement on any website without express permission from Linda or representative/s.
The photos in this document are representative. These images should be in the Valentine Digital Archive and at a much
better DPI.
The photos and comments are presented as they were in the albums of the Facebook page in no particular album
sequence, Unless at the transfer, better, more definitive information was present., the words were as they were first
presented.
This is a digital document and has not ever been printed.
The original materials referenced herein were contributed by those of the area who wished that the history they have
experienced be saved for the future generations.
Researchers should also refer to the Valentine Digital archives at the SALEM COMMUNITY LIBRARY (and perhaps other
websites) for more images in this collection or digital images of items photocopied in this booklet or related to the topic.

KD Line and the Ice Trail ~ ~
For those who are thinking that the locomotives used on the KD-CNW line were small yard engines,
here is a rather nice image of an east bound KD-Chicago Northwestern train, that was on the SILVER
LAKE ICE TRAIL between Kenosha City, Pleasant Prairie, Woodworth, Bristol, Salem, Fox River,
Bassett, Twin Lakes, Genoa Junction and into Illinois towards Rockford. It was big. It was noisy and it
spit ou
This small steam engine study has a purpose - to speak to the two remains along the Silver Lake Ice
Trail that many have called a locomotive and a steam engine. Both are large pieces of equipment and
not representative of the boiler only component that is along the wayside. If you look at this, you can
see the boiler but you can also see the funnel area which could well be the part that would hav

Although this is a link for a stationary tube boiler, for high pressure and BIG power, a smaller steam
engine could have tubes as well or could be without....... A smaller engine could well have just an
open boiler but the welds (as you can see on the rusted mess on the trail), would have been
necessary so that seams would not LEAK. STEAMFITTERS. THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO

being where the asphalt trail is... this is midway between the asphalt and the southeastern most trailer
of the trailer court.

We see the view of the belt at the engine but here is one to the farm equipment a threshing machine,

Traction engines were common place in our area. Not everyone had one but they were not rare.
Sometimes, a group would get together as a threshing group. One of the group might buy the
machine, another might HOUSE it , another might be the one who kept it working but all would be
able to use it when they needed it on their farm..... In the case of the image I included here, we can
see that this site...

This is an 1855 map of some of western Kenosha County that shows the KD line thru the area and
around Silver Lake. Special note is that Wheatland is shown as a full town and Randall is not yet
'invented' .
For those into roads (GS) this one is nice in that it shows that at one time JF went thru to the east...
and didn't bend... must have been a soft road... Interestingly, HWY 83 was not notated(?) and neither
NORTH 75... there are others missing (at least in Salem) but it goes to show that in 1855, the area
was NEW ... CTY F was there. Please notice tho that the map mapper knew about Liberty but placed
it at Silver Lake instead of at where 83 and Cty C intersect.... because he hadn't noted 83! I think it
was a decent road then because LIBERTY WAS THE PLACE in Salem along with Wilmot and
Silver... Downtown Salem didn't really develop until this K&B (aka KD-CNW) was operational and had
a stop ...... Fox River and Bristol weren't really noted on this... though, again, I suspect they were

there. In this mapping, you will note SALEM up at the top, near brass ball. and Bristol near what is
Hwy 50... as those were the places where people transported.. not in the INNER townlands... but on
the PLANK road (aka Cty K)... what we know as 50 was NOT the biggest thoroughfare.. Cty K to Cty
F.. which you can see in this WAS the thoroughfare... and the new train line....
is a 2005 set of images... These are the outcroppings of the lake side foundation for the ice house
'north of the Boyle house" which was in the lake across from Harm's BP Service station on Cogswell.
That is Mrs. June Hartnell- Wheeler in the photo, a regular walker and hiker in Silver Lake! Her
presence shows the depth of the foundations. These were on the LAKE side of the ice house
structure and the lake side of the southern fork off the paved ice trail. Ice harvesting was a BIG
business.. Bizzzy when the ice was a cuttable thickness! During the summer it was not as busy, only
sufficient to fill the boxcars as needed to replenish the cold storage/ice houses in the cities...

This aerial from Google Earth marks the main line (yellow) where the Silver Lake Ice Trail is... The
BLUE is of the 'soft' trail where the outcroppings are and where I believe a low building (in another
section of the album) was for ice, rather than the tall, multi-story Boyle house past the curve
1910 In this rare slice of an image, we can see the low storage building - the height of a tall garage
perhaps - that was along the 'soft' trail spur from the main line of the KD line - the Silver Lake Ice
Trail. The outcroppings would have been on this lake side of this structure
1910 In this rare slice of an image, we can see the large Boyle Ice House that was across the street
(basically) from Harm's BP Service Station on Cogswell.

1910 In this image, we are south of the public beach.. (those small buildings are where the beach is)
on Mr. Schenning's Pier...(believed to be Mr. Schenning on the pier). At the top right of this image is a
tip of the Boyle Ice house in the distance
1910-1920 In this we can see the two conveyors taking ice from the lake to the ice house. The
Boarding house is jut out of this image on the right and was where the STORAGE UNITS are today
next to Harm's BP Service Station
192X This rare but terribly poor quality image of an ice house structure is believed to be on the
North Shore, just westerly of the Silver Lake Park Beach

1907 In this poor quality photo, we can see several ice houses... TO get your bearings the Amityville
house is at the right... moving to the left is the ice house that was at the beach of the Silver Lake park
and then more to the left another ice house, believed also to be Rustman's Jeff Ice and as you move
to the very far left, an ice house with the galleries shown. A rare image. It is known that there was an
ice house also not far from THE MARINA but I haven't seen any images that I can attribute to that
house in that location. There was a spur line there as well, off the SOO but I haven't seen track
layouts of that as of yet.
KD line last run 1939, May 31 WEST bound... At each stop as a means to confirm the train would run
no more, a rail was removed .... The action couldn't have been more clear... No more steam whistles,
no steam valve sounds at the depot, no smoke as the machine powered up, no bells, no need to
LOOK FOR CARS as the train crossed 83, 45, F, W, FR, B ... and change to use motor car to get to
Kenosha city, or to Genoa City/Rockford... no more ice trains, no quick route from Rockford to Dir.
Fletcher and his X-ray equipment....

This believed to be the fire in the Koppisch house which was a controlled burn, not an accident. If
found to be otherwise this will be corrected. Greg Saucerman sez: Nancy Pouler (spelling?) at the
Westosha Report took this photo while they were burning the old place down and she was surprised
as everyone else was when they developed the picture! Made for a great "ghost story!"

Deborah Wortman-Hoffman sez: I remember sitting across the street from this house during our high
school art class and sketching it. By that time it was quite run down and spooky looking. I remember
when it was finally torn down. If you had art class at Wilmot Union High School in the mid to late 80's
you probably sketched this house too.

would be transferrable as he named. The club started in 1877 and incorporated in 1892 as a stock
based entity. Henry was Stockholder #5. This was mailed from Woodworth and was double
cancelled. The name OLD SETTLERS was pretty common - there is also an OLD SETTLERS park in
Union Grove in Racine.

One person died in this spot during this explosion - the Glaze Mill. In previous explosions at this
facility, 12 people died. Powder is dried and polished in glaze mill where coating of graphite is also
applied to protect it from moisture. Tumbling in large drums for 8 hours accomplished entire
operation. Finished powder then goes to pack houses, where it is loaded into kegs and then stored in
magazines

TWIN LAKES ~ WALDECK on MT MORIAH BETWEEN THE LAKES ~~
Arrival by Train from Kenosha... motor wagon to the hotel or boat over to the pier.... welcome to the
world of SUMMER and WATER..... Built of cement block, some commentary reflects that when it was
taken down, dynamite was used. TO reach the place, trips thru TWIN LAKE PARK and over the
Channel Bridge were necessary. Exactly where the buildings were has been lost. Recollections of the
buildings, location and just what it was like would be welcomed. As can be seen from the images, the

Diane Crockett sez: These buildings are still standing. They are all on Lake Mary. They have been
made into homes. We have friends who lived in one of the cottages. They had 5 bedrooms upstairs.
They also had to walk down 80 stairs from the street and their garage to get to their house.

WILMOT ~ Tailor~~ and printer! ~~
This is undated but it is before 1913 when J B Swenson died. In 1913 his boys left the area (they had
been printing the local newspaper THE AGITATOR in the basement and tailoring upstairs. The
building was used for different things. It was taken down sometime after the mid-1970s. The paper is
on microfilm at Parkside Archives. 4 rolls 1900-1913. There is an effort in process to get these
digitized so that researchers do not have to use microfilm.
This is also undated but the guess would be 191x era. We are in the intersection center of C and W
looking to the EAST. As the road dips is where the Bridge is for the Fox River. The other buildings in
this image still stand. The Post House as it was called, on the right, was taken down mid-1960s. It
was called the POST HOUSE because the post office was located in the rear of the building. The
printing presses of the brothers Swenson was in the basement.

Battenburg/Berg Lace and how to make it~~~
This is an embroidery template for Battenburg Lace. The owner would have purchased it either
separate from their sewing/notions dealer/general store or in a kit. It would include the Battenburg
tape lace or braid (24 yards), rings, the template and thread (9321 a 24/24 thread). The artist would
use the template and baste (lightly sew) the braid to the proper place in the pattern keeping things ...
You can see the markings on the template....
The rings were positioned and basted and the braid was BASTED - large stitches that can be pulled
out later...which will then RELEASE the lace from the template….
________________________________________________________________
Snippets of Salem 774C - Original Material by Valentine about Where We Live and What We Were.
In this you can see how the braid is gathered into a circle and stitched. In the braid is a thread on
each side and pulled in the newer braid to make it a more even gather...Originally, this was done by
the seamstress as part of the prep for the braid, but later, it was added as part of the braid itself as
the braid was manufactured to save time. It is more readily seen on the inside curves….
Here you can see the bars and brides between the braid and the rings.... all these areas needed to be
covered with the brides and bars to make it so that there would be no loose areas when the template
was removed...

And here is the finished lace piece just before the basted stitches are removed from the reverse side..
When removed all this lace will FALL OFF and should be as flat as it was on the template. As a note,
the society uses this for display and so has placed it on polyester filler so that it can be seen flat but
not blow off the table at the county fair.......

TREVOR ~ 6 dozen Egg Crate~~~
This is a metal 6 dozen egg crate that was mailed and shipped via the Soo Rail Line between
Burlington Wisconsin and Chicago Illinois. The Sender would put stamps on the card and on the
reverse of the card for the return of the crate. There was a sheet of thick paper printed with a space
for the return address that the person would flip over so that the new address would show in the
cover area. And would flip the slip display the uncancelled stamps. Inside we see preformed
separators and think paper crumpled in the top and bottom of each section for the egg. The cover
was latched with a simple wire thru a hinge. THANKS to GOOD friends (John and Jackie Ciesla) who
donated the treasure to the Society!

TWIN LAKES ~ Depot~~
This is a nice image of the Depot, the people on the platform (are they coming or going? ) and the
locomotive. Again, based on the terrain, it looks like we are facing the east and the locomotive is
progressing westerly.
The last train went thru May 31 1939 westbound. The depot was used as a post office (likely because
it was the post office when the trains operated) and eventually, the building was torn down.
In this image you can read the details about the gas station, its move activity and names. The depot
remains but its use at this time in unknown

I was in the home. Though it was large, it was very utilitarian. I have seen farmhouses with nice built

This is what is often called the TURKEY LADY HOUSE until it was torn down several years ago. This
is the house that was built by George Higgins for his new wife Florence Udell who grew up across the
street from this building now occupied by Roof and Bricks. This was the Higgins Farm location. Their
home in the city was at Wilmot immediately west of the TWIN OAKS BANQUET HALL. They had one
daughter...
This is Florence Udell/Udall and her young husband George Higgins. They were the two who first
lived in the turkey lady house on HWY C as their farm property. He hired people to work his farm as
well as working when necessary. They also had a home in Wilmot adjacent on the west side of the
Twin Oaks Banquet Hall. They had at least one child. She died at 14. They are buried at Wilmot
Cemetery.

points on the roof. A sturdy metal rod would hold it straight while a softer more conductive metal
(copper) was formed in one continuous run between the very point to the ground. The glass was just
slipped over the rod and was an indicator easily seen from the ground to determine if the rod had
been struck by lightning. If it had, attention should be given to the connectivity of the piping between
the tip and the ground and corrected if broken - and a new globe added. This is at the entrance of the
Historical Society in Trevor.

To the rear of the home on the Folly Turkey farm was a formal garden. It was not large but it was
sheltered by several cedar trees (they are still there) from the southern sun. It was clear that there
was a path to the sitting area in this garden from the house. At the main gateway of the garden
(perhaps 20 x 20ft max) were two pedestals and urns like this. The other was a formed cement urn.
One of these is at the COMMUNITY LIBRARY SOUTH GARDEN. It is unknown if this was original to
the HIGGINS family who owned the farm or not.

TREVOR - Higgins Folly Turkey Farm INSIDE~~
I believe she is still alive....Madelyn...... in a safer place... Yes, she drove a black car~~~~
Western Kenosha County Historical Society has the baluster, the wood with Higgins name imprinted,
many of the Christmas decorations found in the attic, the post from a side staircase (in the history
hall), the lightning rod in the history hall, the urns and pedestals at the library, Many of the bridal veil
bushes at the history yard, Visa Banking BIG Metal Sign when credit cards were first the rage, kitchen
items, ladle from the Cooking Room, Containers for pet food, Silk Screen labels, advertising materials
and THESE images and more....at the history hall..
One of the first considerations when people
want to SALVAGE old homes is the insulation. As with many, this house had no insulation... Plaster,
Slats, true 2x4's, not 16inch centers, and clapboard.. NO INSULATION, NO sheathing, no Tyvek, no
caulk. The end result was THE HOUSE WAS COLD. In the case of this home, the last rooms
occupied were the kitchen and the informal dining room and the powder room. Most of the house was
left cold which one can tell when looking at wallpaper, some of the newer Plasterboard joints/tape....
There is a house much like this one perhaps exactly, on Hwy 50 in Walworth across from the Farm
that had the maze. Their recent answer was to side it. A second consideration is the Foundation and
support beams needed to stabilized. The third, the means to heat the home... and 4th, will the rooms
serve the contemporary uses.....and just how big are the pocketbooks of people nowadays.... We
have pictures, we have stories, we have some artifacts, the town has been able to keep up with the
ever changing rules and regulations and the family was fully willing. Such is the mission of anyone
with a partial interest in history... save what you can, document what you can't..... and be happy with
what we are able to do at the moment.....
At the time that the building was being Sold/Torn down there were some rumors of mantels being
removed, and glass door knobs and marble and such. There was never a fireplace in this building.
There were no glass door knobs and though this building was built nicely and was a style many of us
would like to have, it was a very utilitarian building. It was their FARM house, not their CITY house
(Wilmot). The floors were not inlaid, the pocket doors fairly basic and there were no stained-glass
windows to be taken by thieves. It was a big building though and there were people in the house that
should not have been there for a long period of time.
The Main staircase. The first step was to the left of the second main entrance and as you walked up
you faced south. Again, please do not think poorly on the real residents here. This house was clearly

vandalized. Ruined only because they could ruin it. Upon another visit, the entire set of balusters and
railings were gone.
The furnace/boiler image I include so that people with that interest can see what was used to heat the
entire place
Shawn Ford sez: Interesting old converted coal boiler. You can still find quite a few in Waukegan
basements, first coal fired, then an oil burner put in, and then a gas burner put in when natural gas
came to town.

A baluster from the front staircase and a piece of pilaster board which shows that G W Higgins was
the purchaser of the earliest building components; This was stenciled on the load of lumber from the
lumber mill, which I expect was in Antioch, not Salem, Silver Lake or Paddock Lake.

BRIGHTON ~ LOESCHER CEMETERY~~~
No, we have no images of the original cemetery, However, the federal govt may have images
pertaining to the land purchases as part of assessment and payment.
1908 image of Brighton Map. The Loescher Cemetery is shown. at the extreme northwest corner of
section 21.
As you glance at this, notice Brighton's Main Hamlet BRIGHTON
This is an 1861 map of the intersection sections in Brighton where there once was a private cemetery
called the LOESCHER CEMETERY. at the extreme northwest corner of Section 21. I am not sure
how many people were buried there but at least these three people: W Eddy, P Patterson and Roby
Sheldon. were originally buried there. (Others, I believe they have been moved to a cemetery in
Milwaukee) When Bong moved in, the cemetery was uprooted and at least these three people were
moved to Salem Mound Cemetery at Hwy C and 50. IN conjunction with this map and so you can see
the CEMETERY MARKING (may not have been a cemetery there in 1861) visit this map:

TREVOR ~ Rock Lake Spur to WILMOT PIT~~
1908 area of Rock/Marshall Lake and the spur to the American Sand and Gravel #9 pit aka Wilmot Pit
to the south side of the Holy Name of Jesus Cemetery. Not to be confused with the block/cement
business on Hwy C today. However, one can understand why both are there.. there is sand AND
gravel. When you look at the map, we can see what is now the Boy scout area that was owned by
Wisc Central and the reason that Benham sold out Liberty to move to Wilmot - thinking that the rail
line was going TO WILMOT... alas, no rail line. The spur to the Rock/Marshall lake hugged the
Runyard Hahn line ON THE HAHN side since it was a HAHN operation and may have been a private
spur. Spurs often became roadbeds when the track was removed. 103rd in Sunset Oaks is part of the
Marchuk spur. And the 'trail' in Brysek's that we travelled for the SPOOK TRAIL at Halloween was the
spur for the Paddock Lake houses. In this image, the rail spur at the very bottom was just on the other
side of the state line and connected with the main line in the image. As we traverse Rock Lake Road
or TREVOR ROAD, and we make the hard turn (also change in asphalt) we are actually crossing
over the spur. The driveway to the house on the east and the tree line on the west is the apx location.
Janet Smith sez: My great-great uncle Will Evans is shown on this map as owning a farm to the west
of Rock Lake. The house seems to be between Rock Lake and the Rock Lake Road, just south of
122nd Street. I Will Evans is buried in Liberty Cemetery.
Some of the early wooden Wilmot Bridge ended up at Mr. Evans farm. The story is the Mr. Heigl
found out that some of the big timbers being burned at the Evans farm were from the bridge. He
pulled one out.. Some of that beam is at the historical society.
Below are a few images from Kenosha County Interactive Mapping for the location of the Evans farm
place. There is a street overlay for the researcher who wants to know exactly where the buildings
were.

WEEDS and CHESTER HOCKNEY~~
His business in Silver Lake is where the exit of the Post Office is, on a triangular property.
Chester Hockney and his weed cutting machine. The Shoreview subdivision purchased one of these
for their lake shore clean up very early on. The group then leased it out to other lakes before selling it.

one in the middle the Dix home. Both still stand.
19xx this shows the King's/Foster's Mercantile likely in the 40s but there is only a simple
GROCERIES sign on it. We are looking North. TO the west we can slightly see the Mapleside Gas
station that was owned by Arthur Hartnell and operated by the Kaphengst boys. The loved their
combustion engines! The liked motorcycles too! As you look, notice the eastern side of the King's
building
19xx Undated view looking north on Hwy 83 at West Lake street The tree on the left is at the corner
of the Citgo Station. In this we can see the Northwestern rear of the King's building which was a an
easy access to the Post office - one of the several locations of the PO thru the years. Later, the
building without the hitches was moved to this location and became part of King's and the post office.
We can see the front of the Arthur Hartnell sales/showroom building .

KING's Mercantile. The house on the right is the Arthur Hartnell Residence which was built 1921 and
burned in the 2007-2010 era. Notice as you look at this, the hedgerow, the trees along Hwy 83.

Carter Schuld sez: My mother (from Burlington) rented the apartment right above Weidman's when
she worked at the china factory in Antioch. She married Clarence Schuld who was the barber in the
little building (no longer there) across from Siebert's....Mr. Dix barbered there previously.
1910 another view of Salem Square but during a winter/early spring time so we can see the Middle
building, the 2012 Salon 83 and Weidman's/Dibbles. In the foreground, we can see one of the tracks
of the Kenosha Division of the Chicago and Northwestern Rail road aka KD line. At this time the
mercantile was called FOSTER's
1910 this is a close up view of the earlier image. Notice to the right of this image of King's(Known

Sieberts Pubs in this as the SALEM INN and I can just make out that the prop. is a MAX - but can't

The bottom Image is of the McVey Hotel aka Camp Lake Hotel and Gardens. Notice that there is a
building about where the southern/western end of the building is today.... there was another such
building at the opposite end that was used for dining.. It had been moved to be closer to the main
building... After the Novaceks sold they moved the building back to its location of today. The Artist's
home. The Novaceks were the ones who moved it in the first place! There were 39 rooms at the

UNBELIEVEABLY RARE CAN YOU GUESS? What do you see it he far distance? Sieberts....The
building to the right side is FOSTER's KING's and the post office addition. Ace Auto body aka Hartnell
Showroom does not show in this. Though it may exist in the shadows. This is at about the street at
Candy Ranch looking to the southerly....
This too is unbelievably rare image. IT IS FROM 1909 I know one fan (maybe 2) who has looked at
the Right Side Building for most of his grown up life and that this pic is being taken from just a tad
down from their driveway! I call this WEST LAKE STREET. ON the left side, though faint, is the top of
the Salem Congregationalist Church chimney (not a cross) aka Salem Opera House .

In this 1913 image, we can see the American House, aka Pease Hotel and the eastern edge of the
KING's FOSTER's business. Notice that the American Hotel had a business entrance on its western
side as well as a southern door. This building was torn down by Arthur Hartnell in 1921 to make way
for his residence (and eventually the residence of his son.) HIs residence burned some time ago. The
son's home now sports a nice brown siding! This is on the north side of Lake Street.
This is a rare image of the PEASE HOTEL aka AMERICAN HOTEL in Downtown Salem. Arthur
Hartnell tore this down 1920/1921 to make way for his new residence.

Murdered at Trevor
Held at the Trevor Hall aka Baethke Dance Hall aka Towne Square in Trevor on Railroad Street. This
was a play which can be found on line (written in 1904 or 1906) at
http://www02.us.archive.org/stream/auntdinahsquilti00phil/auntdinahsquilti00phil_djvu.txt
TREVOR
HALL was not the Western Kenosha County Historical Society history hall but was Baethke's Dance
Hall which is now the Towne Square. The Play, no doubt, was performed on the second floor which
was the only large open place (other than a barn) for such an event in Trevor.

Salem - Hooker Lake ice houses~~
1907 image of the eastern most ice house on the south shore of Hooker Lake. The smoke - is from
the steam engines that made the powered the conveyors for the ice blocks. - much like an elevator.
They ran two conveyors. Do you see the mound of snow under the conveyors? That was created
when the blocks of ice went under a scrapper bar at just about that place where the mound is highest.
This was don...
1911 from Vanderhoef area looking to the Southeast and in this too you can see both ice houses if
you look closely. I believe that the house that we see is the Three Oaks House which because this
was mailed in 1911 dates the house to at least as early as 1911. Salem Oaks is in the middle
distance. My best guess is that the row of trees on the top of the distant area would make the spur
line that left Siebert Road to Paddock Lake dual icehouse. The House that we see, I believe is the
THREE OAKS house.

19xx This is Matt Loescher in his rowboat and standing on an island. This is not too distant from the
Vanderhoef residence but looking to the SO east. In this, you can see the two ice houses... the
eastern far away and the western one...both used the KD line that fronted the Siebert Road. I Believe
that Matt lived in the blue house across the street from the current Salem Post Office - North. The
twin girls Loescher who were postmistresses at one time, were related to Matt - I think siblings all
19XX which shows the north shore of Hooker Lake and the boat houses at the western end of the

1925 this is the Western ice house on the south side of Hooker Lake near to Wheeler's. Notice that
the trees have been painted white. I used to think it was to keeps bugs at bay. It actually is so that
one does not walk into them in the pitch black - or drive into them. Common in areas where there are
moving vehicles/people and darkness. Also, I have no idea why THIS conveyor had a covering over
the tracks. Also, notice the rooflines of this ice house - unique to Hooker
1911 the Western but you can faintly see the eastern Ice house on the south side of Hooker from the
shore at Lake Street. In the distance in the open area is what will become Salem Oaks. The house in
the front is Kurz Cottage aka Wheeler's
1908 The western Ice house by Wheeler's which you can see - at this time called Kurz Cottage and a
boat house which may not have been associated with Kurz but with the boarding house and what I
believe was a farm behind that row of trees. Notice the windmill tad to the left of the boathouse

1912 looking from apx the shore of Lake Street to the western ice house by Wheelers. Depth of field
is terrible but my guess would be that the tree on the right is apx Tesar shore land. This is a nice
image of the Wheeler Kurz Cottage and the ice house and a tidbit of their boarding house. In this
image we can see the western wall of the ice house and the windmill and a structure... which I believe
was the boarding house. here is a new building now, in the place of the boarding house
1925. My guess is that this is the view from THREE OAKS which we featured in the past and it shows
the Western Ice House and the Wheeler area. this is a rare image

1836 section survey of the town of Salem which shows Montgomery Lake. Its meanderings are
recorded in the survey from which this map is taken. 1836 is the earliest date for legal definitions of
land that we have. Earliest recording for Kenosha County are physically held in Racine County Land
Courthouse.

Christy Hoff sez: If the Curtis at the bottom of the map is Mary Alice Curtis or related to Philo Curtis,
they are my ancestors
The W M Curtis at the bottom of the map is WALKER M CURTISS who owned a great deal of
property in Town of Salem including the property that is now the Salem Community Parks. I don't
have a genealogy for the Curtiss or the Curtis family to know if they are one and the same with name
spelling changes. This naming convention also is a reason why plat are not legal documents. The
Curtiss family was here in 1840s...very early... In the 1873's Walker's father owned the land including
the land that the Town Hall is on.

Stephen R. Nelson sez: Bottom right "eger" was Krueger, my inlaws bought that farm and built their
house there in the late 60s and started Beckwood Real Estate in this spot. At the time it was the only
realtor based in western Kenosha County (so I heard). And as far as the Kreugers, Mrs. Kreuger kept
the property south of AH for quite a few years, then moved to a smaller house in downtown Salem.
My in-laws took care of her like family and she was always at Thanksgiving and Christmas when I
came upon the scene. Her own kids were never seen nor heard from until the reading of the will... go
figure!

SALEM - FIRST NORTHERN ADDITION North HOOKER LAKE~~
1907 mail date is the earliest date in the collection showing Three Oaks in the First Northern
Subdivision on the North Side of Hooker Lake in Salem, town of Salem. There is a person walking
down Lake Street in the image. We know this is Lake Street because at the lake end of the street are
the boathouses. It is because of this that we know the orientation on the lake. The house still stands
and appears to be the first on the lake shore of this subdivision
1930 In this image we can see the eastern side of the Three Oaks building and in the distance the
boat houses and the western shore of Hooker Lake and DOWNTOWN SALEM. It is an opposite view
of the 1907 mail date card When you look at the boat houses, look at the "white' building there. I
believe that is the local ice house that today is a residence. This ice house was likely a co-operative
for those in business in downtown Salem

shore of Hooker Lake. Notice the rowboats as there were no gas engines at this time.
1907 mail date tinted likely from the midway between the two icehouses towards the north/northwest.
We can see that the Three Oaks is the only house on the north shore. There is a blur to the far left
and that could well be Hwy 83 and the Frank Smith buildings in the distance. As mentioned before,
photography with plates causes a depth of field distortion.

1909 mail date image of Three Oaks on the first Northern Addition Shoreline of Hooker Lake. In these
images, you can see fence posts and presumably there are wires connecting them. This was a
pasture area for Frank Smith's cows/steers. They would have had access to the grass and the water.
It is also very likely that it is the reason that the area is free of long grasses and shrubs - natural
mowing machines. The trees, in these images would have been old - over 50 years for these girths
and heights as oaks. We can only presume however that these were oaks in fact. They could well
have been another type of tree which would change the ages.

1909 mailed date is a photo by Raymond Lugar #133 of Antioch Illinois but was also from Kenosha
City. He documented Town of Salem quite well and without many of his images, we would not have
the history that we have in the collection. In this image, we can see a closer approximation that Three
Oaks was not likely the OWNER of the THREE OAKS and were easterly a bit! What I also like about
this image is that it documents the shoreline on Hooker Lake in this early 1900 timeframe. He must
have been IN a boat or, there must have been some sort of dock in the water for this angle.

SALEM ~ Jail ~~
This is the Salem Jail and it still is standing (2012) on the street to the Salem Methodist Church off of
Hwy 83. There is no official document showing that anyone was put in this jail by a court but, it is
logical that it was used to let people sleep it off and not cause harm to themselves or others. It is a
best guess that this was built in about 1900-1910. When you look at the roof, notice the curve formed concrete. This likely would have been used because of the danger of tracks and moving trains
and especially during the time of ice harvesting when people who did not live here had 'moved' into
the area to work.
This is the western side of the Salem Jail. Notice that there must have been a source for warmth

PADDOCK LAKE - Pavilion in Old Settlers ~~

The Old Settlers was a club of sorts whereby people would buy shares in the club. These shares
could be sold/given/transferred to others. Many areas had such Old Settler's Clubs.
1892 W V Cull's certificate as a member of the Old Settler's Club. W V Cull was a large land owner
very early in the history of Salem. His main home was on the north side of K in Brighton just to the
west of 75. It still stands and is in excellent shape. His main barn however, on the south side of K in
Salem was torn down 2 years ago. Another of his properties was the Miner Hartnell farm which Miner,
a relative, farmed for his lifetime. That farm is what we know as Sorenson Fields today. This indicates
that the Club was organized in 1877. What cost $5.00 in 1892 would cost $119.76 in 2010
1902 shows that the Sr died and his son was the beneficiary of the shares. Notice that they are at 766
certificates in 1902. What cost $5.00 in 1902 would cost $124.30 in 2010

BRIGHTON ~~~
pre 1963. This Brighton Plat map is from a booklet that is undated but suspected to be pre-1963. This
map however would show Brighton in its mid-1950s era before the Bong Air Force Base/Strategic Air
Command was built. By 1959, it was determined that it would not be completed and by 1960 was
disposed of - to the State and to the County. As we can see, Brighton was a full 36 square miles.
Notice Klondike and where downtown Brighton was! For those who travel JB, you can see on this
map that the small lake has a name - Lake Evans and you can also see the reason for that name!
Make note of the position of the roadways, especially what we know as HWY 75
1963 Brighton with Bong Air Force Base now STATE and COUNTY noted which consumed nearly 9
square miles of the town and separated the north from the south by the creation of an island of
STATE land. You can also see the changes of the Hwy 75, PH in process. Roads since this time
have changed even more. Notice the property in section 10 and 15 Central HS. The County Property
in Section 10 reflects the beginnings of BRIGHTON DALE golf. Also Lake Evans is now Flanagan

1996 the Hwy C Box Dam on its footplate and in position. The corrugated metal is the support for the
roadway during this process. The small metal rounds were for support of the cement in the installation
and are for the valves that can be opened and closed to allow water to the wetlands south of Hwy C.
Fish can go thru these valves when open. Roughly, they are 18 inches. This is A COUNTY DAM and
County is the maintainer for opening and closing the valves.

2010 Grate on the top of the box dam. This grate only prohibits big articles from falling in and blocking
the two culverts. It allows visibility into the box and can be removed by County Personnel (this dam is
owned and controlled by COUNTY) to clear out the box. The leading edge of the cement lip of the
box is the official lake level of Camp Lake. If the level is too low, the valves can be closed ...

2010 A photo of the emergency outlet culvert. When water goes over the cement 'fence' the lake is
over its acceptable surface level and is expected to flow thru the culvert. This would happen if the
wetlands are also low enough to accept the water and if the water can get thru the culvert. This is an
image of before the culvert cleaning in June of 2010.
2010 June Hwy C Outlet dam before clean out of the emergency overflow culvert west of this
location. The marker is in 10ths. It is a figure then used with this particular dam for measurement of
lake levels. It is calibrated with 2 other locators that are not easily affected by water, ice, boats or
people. Often it is used as a component of information to making a lake SLO NO WAKE. A lake must
be in extremely serious condition to be closed. In living memory, a lake has not be closed in this area.
A closed lake means no vehicles are to be on it. A contamination, oil spill, flammability issue, etc.,
might be issues. If high water, the citation would be SLO NO WAKE.
on 2012 08 09, this measurement read 10. not 11.5.

2010 County is removing the total clog of the emergency outlet culvert. It took 4 truckloads to clear
the area above and below the roadway and the culvert under the roadway. The level of the lake
dropped about 1 inch but quickly rose when the water than had been pressured out away from the
lakeshore in the form of groundwater returned to the lake as part of the watershed.

2005 08 was the last comparable drought in the area and this shows a sandbar at the end of 110th
creek. Notice that it is solid from the shore towards the center of the lake. In 2012 this sand has
become more of an island.
2012 08 drought which shows the location of the water level at the tree. Do you see the ledge? That
is where the water usually is. The dock usually nearly sits ON THE WATER. The birdhouse in the
distance is on the south shore of the 110th creek.

2012 08 this shows the mouth of the 110th creek and where the sandbar has been created with the
force of the water. Much of the change caused between 2005 and this 2012 image is from the FLASH
FLOOD 0f 2009 when huge amounts of water moved from the creek in a short period of time.'
2005 shows a shoreline on Camp Lake where the water used to be at the first line of green. the
brown is vegetation that has since died due to lack of water. Usually the area in green was under
water. The distance from the brown/green line to the water is apx 12-15 inches

FOX RIVER ~~~
am sorry to say that this is a pitiful representation of a photograph of the Fox River station which was
north of the sharp curve of Cty HWY W. Originally this small community was called Erickson. It was
changed I believe by the common use of the railroad of FOX RIVER STATION because from
downtown Kenosha, FOX RIVER would have been distant and a good descriptor. It was a decent
sized station....

KLONDIKE ~~~
Frank G Hartnell of NN farm in Brighton
Clara Burgess Hartnell married Frank G Hartnell, of Burgess Corners aka Brass Ball Corners.
The Burgess Family is an equally old family in the Salem area and there are also members on the
Burgess side still in the area. Eventually, she moved to Brass Ball Corners and lived in the Burgess
home that was just about where COMMUNITY STATE BANK is at 75-83-50. The BALL itself or
replica is hanging at the intersection of 50 and 83/75 in the corners... the building aka tavern is gone..
The corner doesn't look anything like it used to look... thankfully we have photos...
