SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS
LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Ferraro, Miss Axtell, Karen Gitzlaff, Jean Rasch, Linda Krahn, Sandra
Klemens, Dave Poisl.
Our first class meeting was held in September and the following class officers were elected:
Jean Rasch, President; Dave Poisl, Vice-President; Karen Gitzlaff, Secretary; Sandra Klemens,
Treasurer; Sheila Herda, Student Council Representative, and Carole Hlavacek, Alternate Student Council Representative. We chose Miss Axtell as our advisor, and Mr. Ferraro was appointed
as our assistant advisor.
Our class started out in "55" with 113 freshmen, now we have 90 seniors in our graduating
class.
In the past year our class has done 'several things to raise money for the class. We have
sold stationery with the sketch of the school on the front; we sponsored a dance in November
and we also sponsored a roller skating party in January.
Cara Steinbach was our Homecoming candidate. ~]:,e was also Homecoming Queen due to
the fact that the seniors sold the most Homecoming tickets.
We the class of "58" wish to thank Mr. Erickson and the entire faculty for the help they
have given us during our four years here. We would like to give special thanks to those teachers
who have served as our class advisors. They are: Mr. Longergan, Miss Axtell, Mr. Broten,
Mr. Ferraro, and Mr. Campbell. We could not have accomplished what we have without their
help.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Gale Flaschner, Frank Schauer, Clarence Yonk, Pat Taft, Mr. Heyse, and
Mr. Sorenson.
When school opened at Central this year we had an enrollment of approximately
142 freshmen.
Our class officers are: Frank Schauer, President; Barb Epping, Vice-President;
Clarence Yonk, Secretary; Pat Taft, Treasurer; Gale Flaschner, Reporter; Sherrill
Beck, Student Council Representative; and John Garber, Alternate Student Council Representative. Mr. Sorenson was chosen as our advisor, and Mr. Heyse was appointed
assistant advisor.
When initiation came around the freshmen accepted their green beanies and the
book carrying. At the initiation dance the boys looked charming with their blouses,
nylons, and skirts. The girls looked scrumptious in their new style burlap sack outfits. We thought it all in fun and took it quite sportingly.
Our candidate for Homecoming was Donna Anderson.
We also sponsored a Freshman Sock Hop and a magazine sale to boost our treasury.
We thank our advisors for their help and assistance on our start at C. H. s.

"SERVICE" is the motto of the Central High School Library Club, a co-educational
organization, organized under the direction of Miss Irene Bosman, librarian.
As the result of their money-raising projects during the year, the Club presented
the school with a new light-oak typewriter desk, desk chair, and typing desk chair
for use in the library workroom office. The Club also purchased a new light oak bookcase and a new wing-back reading chair for the faculty professional reading center in
the library.
Because of the fine spirit of co-operation and services on the part of members
of the Library Club, it is possible to make the library function more efficiently for the
welfare of both students and faculty.

The spring forensic contest provides the student the opportunity to enjoy speech
activities in many forms and to compete with the best talent from the whole state. Beginning with the local contest students are selected on the basis of excellence for participation in league, district, and state contests.
A new system of awards has been devised for forensic students this year. The
student is eligible to receive a school letter as soon as he has attained three A's-regardless of the contests in which they are received. In addition to the school letters,
other awards will be given to students demonstrating proficiency in forensic activities.

Since Central has no regular grade school band program, new musicians for the
band must be started among students already in high school -- mostly freshmen.
The average freshman band student studies about one year, after which he is admitted to the high school band if his progress warrants it.
Those few freshmen who already know how to play well enough are admitted to the
high school band immediately.

THE 1958 CLASS PROPHECY
One day in the summer of 1963, Karen Gitzlaff walked into a beauty salon owned by Judy
Hilbert. Judy and her assistant, Mrs. Earl Johnson, the former Joan Kerkhoff, were busy at
work. As Karen sat down, she noticed Mrs. Wayne Meyer, the former Sharon Torrey, sitting
in the chair beside her. Sharon was surprised to see Karen and to find out she was a private
secretary for Jay Good, who is a big executive at General Electric. Karen told Sharon that
Sandy Wilson and Gail Miller were also secretaries for Jay, and that Mary Kolnik was his
accountant.
Joan told them that Judy Johnson had been in recently on one of her stop-overs as an air
line stewardess. Judy had said that her next flight would be with Dave Poisl, who is now a pilot
for a commercial airline. Judy also said that on one of her flights she had seen Lita Maleski
who was flying to Paris to study art. On Dave's last stop-over in South America, he met Ron
Andersen, an archaeologist, who just discovered the lost city of the Incas. Ronnie told Dave
that in his travels he had met Sharon Davis and John Norton who are now missionaries in New
Guinea.
Judy Hilbert asked if any of them were going to the dance Saturday night at the Eagle's
Club. She said that Don Walker's Dixieland Band was playing for the dance. Richard Sabin is
now the drummer for Donnie's band. Bob Koehn plays trwnpet, and Marlene Gentz and Gene
Krueger play sax. She added that Marlene also owns her own music store.
Sharon told them that Linda Krahn, now Mrs. Dave Cowan, just had a new house built.
Their house was designed by Richard LeMay, and the landscaping was done by the company
owned by John Carmichael.
Judy asked if any of them had heard about Diana Muzillo's roller rink, which was named
"Muzillo's Rolling Wheels." She also mentioned that Judy Halsey and Barb Knickerbocker work
for Diana as skating instructors.
Sharon told them that her husband Wayne was president of the farm bureau. She said that
she had attended the last meeting with him and was surprised to see so many of her former
classmates there. Some of those she mentioned were Tom Busse, Bill Reynolds, Larry Enlow,
Dick Winfield, Elroy Hoegsted, Richard Schlagel, and Wilfred Meier, who now runs a large truck
farm. The others own profitable dairy farms.
Karen informed us that Ray Ellis is now at a farm camp training to play baseball with
the Braves. Dick Weber had just quit baseball to join the Air Force along with Larry Ginder
and Ray Smith, who all have promising careers at Bong Air Base. Karen told them that among
their other classmates who were in sports were Ron Nelson who is now first string quarterback for the University of Wisconsin. It was not surprising to hear that Ray Lubkeman and Rich
Skora were both top-rate basketball players.
Judy related that Cara Steinbach also owns a beauty parlor in a neighboring city, and that
Cara has Joan Wedman working as her assistant. Judy said that Cara must be doing pretty well,
because she just bought a new Lincoln and is having it customized at Jim Cameron's Body Shop.
Vernon Leipzig is now head automotive mechanic for Jim. Jim had just bought a Thunderbird
from Ralph Rau, who owns the Ford Garage. While on the subject of cars, Judy mentioned that
Butch Krohn and Ted Dooper both own their own gas stations, and that Bob Gilliam works for
Butch as head mechanic.
Joan then said that she had just seen Donna Bobula who now runs her own orphanage.
Donna told Joanie that Sheila Herda now owns her own dress shop and designing studio. Sheila
designs many of the creations worn by the models from Barb Radon's Modeling School. Barb's
models pose for the magazines for which Melinda Miller does the fashion illustrating. Donna
also told Joanie that Margie Lichthardt, now Mrs. Dennis Desotell, is sending her dizzy little
daughter to a nursery school operated by Phyllis Milner. Phyllis was telling Margie that Judy
Lebangood is a first grade teacher in the same school. Margie is now working as secretary for
Ruth McCormack who owns her own accounting office. Margie also said that Ruth had just left
to race in the women's motorcycle finals at Daytona Beach, Florida.
Margie had told Donna that Sandy Klemens and Joyce Gooch still have their big dreams.
Wandy wants to be head football coach at Notre Dame and Joyce wants to be head basketball
coach at Miami University, Audrey Mudgett still plans on being the first woman satelliter to go
into space.
(D ~
Just then John Schultz walked in from his joint barber shop and saloon next door to Judy's
beauty salon. John said that Jim Barnett had just been in from the night spot he owns called
"Barney's Bar."
Jim had told John that he had just seen Phil Cirone who has become a millionaire raising chickens. Paul Eberle who is now a veterinarian had just been out to see Phil's chickens.
While on the subject of millionaries, John said that Lanny Heinen has become a millionaire in
the oil fields of Texas.
John told the girls that all his cheese and sausage is being supplied to him by John Lichter
who now owns the Brass Ball Cheese Mart.
Just then Mrs. Pete Hanson, the former Helen Haeusl, walked into the beauty salon to have
her hair fixed, Helen told them that the former Mary Slagoski is now married. Helen said that
her little boy is taking accordion lessons from Judy Otterson. He is the youngest student Judy
has ever had. Helen is now teaching tap dancing part-time at the studio owned by Darlene Robers.
Then Helen said that the other day when she was shopping at the A. & P., she saw Al
VanderVelpen who is now head manager of a chain of grocery stores; At the A. & P. she had also
run into Mary Conrad who is now a mechanical engineer, and Margaret Statema, her secretary.
Mary had told Helen that Denis Flaschner had just graduated from engineering college
and has a top job at General Motors. Bob Lentz had just graduated too, and is now an electrical
engineer. Mary had just heard that Jim Walker was a construction engineer working on a crosscountry free-way as head foreman. John Dorn is now sales engineer for Bob Schroeder who
owns his own Neon Sign Company.
Margaret Statema told Helen that Eileen Dinges is now starring in the opera "Naughty
Marietta" with Don Willkomm who is the star baritone for the Metropolitan Opera.
Margaret also said that she had just received a letter from Mrs. Lowell Hanke, the former
Nancy Lapp, who is now flying jets with her husband, In her letter Nancy had said that she had
just heard from Rosalie Pfeffer, vacationing in Reno, who had become a professional canasta
gambler.
Helen asked if anyone had gone to the ice follies last winter. She has gone and was surprised to see Linda Hartman, who is now a professional skater, starring in the follies.
Helen had also heard from Carole Hlavacek who is now a court reporter for the Supreme
Court. Carole told her that she had just seen a magic show in which Dave Westman starred with
his rising card table act.
John told them that Del Golbrichtnowownshis own barber shop, Del had told John that Chuck
Maurer had just been in a few days ago and is now married and racing at Indianapolis. Chuck had
told Del that when he went to the hospital to see a pal, he met Jessie Day who is now a registered
nurse. Jessie told Chuck that Jean Rasch had just graduated from college and has a full time
job, shining all yellow shoes.
By this time Judy and Joanie were finished with their work, so the five girls went out and
had lunch together and John went back to his saloon and barber shop.
