Breaking Through
...------
1
The 1993-1994
school year has been
one of many break
throughs. Saint
Joseph High School
has tackled everything
from learning a new
schedule to developing
winning sports teams.
One of the first major
breakthroughs was seen in the inexperienced freshmen. Coming into a new school, meeting new friends,
having new teachers, and getting used to a new setting
are all challenging. A major breakthrough for everyone came when the schedule was introduced. Nine
different rotations, A and B days, early dismissal
every Thursday, extended PACES, assemblies, and
mass schedules put some excitement into everyone's
lives for a while. As time went on, we adjusted.
In sports, breakthroughs showed up when new coaches
joined our athletic program, and both new and old players
returned for excellent seasons. Our football team won their
first conference game since 1989, and the girls tennis team
made to the State Tournament for the first time in history. We
have once again come to the point where we are competitive
in the tough Metro Conference.
In classrooms, St. Joseph High School broke through
the barriers of ignorance and filled minds with new knowledge
of how the world works. Anatomy classes have returned and
are full, a Calculus class has been added, School Publications
and Scene Study are back. Students are breaking through and
gaining access to knowledge through labs, classrooms, computers, the library, music, art, language, and all creative ways
of thinking are being encouraged.
1993 - 1994 has been a tremendous year and many
obstacles have been over come. What a BREAK THROUGH!

FRESHMEN!!!
It was a hot, muggy,
afternoon. The soft
rumble of fresh feet could
be heard for miles. The
library was full of them,
along the halls, and soon
the courtyard. They
came, they bought, they
partied hard on Freshmen
Fun Day! Their newness
was obvious, their
arrival was grand.
Slowly but surely
(who's Shirley?), they
joined forces with the
rest of the school,
becoming not only
visitors, but a part of
St. Joe's.

Breaking Through The Realm
Sophomore year can be a new beginning for many
students. Breaking through the realm of Freshmen and
entering your Sophomore year can be," Hard to get used
to and very different," said sophomore Margaret Van
Bergen. Sophomore Meg Reckling, said this about
Sophomore year compared to Freshman year,"lt's pretty
cool! The work is a lot harder and I'm always busy with
something(it's a challenge), but all in all it's been a great
year!" Getting older can also mean getting comfortable
with your classmates, and letting your personalities shine
out. With all of these personalities, this Sophomore class
will definitely be one to Break On Through!

Breaking the Rules
Curfew seems to get only a few
Juniors in trouble. When curfew
is mis ed, some Juniors are grounded
and other are just yelled at. Juniors
who are a little more clever and
creative make up excu es and get
out of trouble completely. I asked
a few Junior to hare their best
excuses for being late for curfew.
The most common excuses were, "I
fell a leep," "The clock was wrong,"
and, "I had to bring a couple of people
home." The funniest excuse was," I
hit my head and was knocked out."
Missing curfew is just part of being
a teenager.

eniors experience the real world!
To the re t of St. Joe's, winter 'um was two

On Tue day, January 4, the enior class
gathered in the chapel with their parent , where
they were "annointed " and sent out to
experience the real world. The next week and
a half changed their view of life.
The "Teen Live Chri t" program ent the
senior to work sites throughout the Milwaukee and Keno haareas. Senior helped people
of variou cultures, religions, age , and disabilities. Many of the enior worked with
people that are not as fortunate a them elve ;
people who are struggling to live day by day

and ome, who just want to stop living.
The seniors were able to sit and talk with
these people who liked having new faces
around . They found the simplest
pleasu re out of talking to somone from the
class of 1994.
Hopefully, this will become a tradition
like retreats; for it is just as va luable of an
experience! As St. Joe's continues with
this, the classes to come will be given an
eye opening to different ways of life.

Peace Camp
Seventeen seniors jumped on a bu and

with these families after main topics were
presented.
They learned about the first, second, and
third world countries while playing a game.
In the end, Katie Kruse ended up in the first
world, where she was served a gourmet steak

Sophomores bond on their retreat.
Retreats are a time to make new friends and enhance those
friendships already made. Everyone in the class worh together as
one for a comman goal: unity and understanding. Retreats provide
a chance to get away, to learn about and from each other. It all starts
Freshman year, getting to know one another. By Senior year,
friendships have been established and a readiness to make them
stronger is apparant. Kick back, relax and enjoy memories in the
making.

come together and share feelings about relationship .
It is also a chance to come together as Christians and
feel like you belong. Mrs. Sue Kangas was the retreat
leader and guest speaker. Mr. Lany Coe and Fr. Brian
were accompanied by some parent chaperone and a
number of senior who helped make the retreat a

Sadie Hawkins was ajoyous event.
This year the dance was a sock hop held in
the gym. Many people enjoyed frolicing in
the Star Walk, while others enjoyed bobbing
to groovy tunes.
After being re-scheduled because of a
life threatening blizzard, the dance was a
huge success. Joe Sturino's band was among
the many highlights of the evening.

Students at St. Joe's really value using the library. They like the warm
atmosphere and the opportunity to relax
while doing their homework. The library has computers and CD ROM work
tations for the student's use. St. Joe's
has broken through the barrriers by expanding its technology and allowing
student to explore with new forms of
researching and compiling information.
Classrooms allowed students to breakthrough the barriers this year. The teachers at St. Joe's have incorporated cooperative learning in their teaching method , preparing the tudents for a world
of "What should we do rather than what
should I do'?" Student feel that because

Students discover life outside of
St. Joe's
This year, many students from St. Joe's had
the opportunity to host
foreign exchange students from Barcelona,
Spain. These girls were
from a private, all girl's,
Catholic high school.
They enjoyed learning a
new way of life and
being exposed to different cultures and traditions. The host students
from St. Joe's also
learned about the youth
of Spain and the similarities and differences
we share. The girls

was an important stepping stone for establishing a foreign exchange

After over two and a half months ofrehearsals,
the cast of Into the Woods was ready to uphold the St.
Joe's reputation of putting on a fabulous show. This
show was different than others in that it has a very
strong message. The topics of growing up and responsibility are themes in this production. Though the
themes were serious, the cast and crew had a great time
doing this show.

into fabulous jewels, but he was sad that he
didn't pick up more. So it is with education, you
are happy for what you have and sad you didn't

The Clubs Break Through ....
As a part of high school life, many students get
involved in extra-curricular activities. Clubs are a big part
of the extra-curricular life of the students at St. Joseph
High School.
The clubs at SJHS cover a large range of student
interests. Student Council is a club that allows students to
help make and change rules that affect the whole student
body. Key Club is the high school level of Kiwanis Club.
Student Ambassadors help orientate new students and
promote SJHS to grade schools in the area. A new club
this year is the Hacky Sack Club. This new club has
quickly grown to be the largest club in the school. These
are just a few examples of the fine clubs at SJHS.

Ryan Pierangeli, Bob

and Honorary Cofounder Zach Garcia
formed this group early
this year with the help
of our moderator, Mr.

largest student run club
in the school with over
50 members, not to
mention the funnest!
The club sponsored a
school dance in April
and had an irregular
meeting schedule, but
when meetings were
held they were some of
the most memorable
times of the year.
Hopefully in '94 and '95
the Hacky Sack Club
will continue, and be

Disappointing season
Baseball
With a season full of
errors, the Varsity Baseball team ended with a 211 record in the tough
Metro Conference.
Ron Schuler Sr., their
new coach, assisted the
team in working on both
defense and offense. They
saw individual improvements and learned to work
as a team.
Michael Scuglik
thought, "Everyone tried
their best. We learned
from our mistakes, but
we were also killed by
how many errors we
had. We just couldn't
manage to win them all,
but wait until next year."

We'vemadeit
through another year.
This year started out a
little rocky, but the yearbook turned out great.
The staff pulled together and worked really hard. We would
like to offer a special
thank you to Melissa
Schuch for drawing the
cover. Thanks also to
those people outside of
class who worked so
hard on yom layouts.
Congratulations to the
whole staff for a job
well done.
