The Power or Right of Choosing
OPTIOHS
What should I do?
CHOICES
St. Joe's provides us with plenty of options
from which we can choose.
ALTERNATIVES
Sports or events like the Fall Play, Swing
Choir, and the Spring Muscialjust to name a
few .
DETERMINATION
Academics. If we do well, we can advance to
honors classes, even to valedictorian status.

There are many selections to choose from. Each will make a
memory that we share today, and that will live on even after we
graduate.
These things we do will affect our future. They are the shape of
things to come, our "dibs" on life, and our determination to
succeed.
The dilemma of it all, is that they are all our

Ring Around
the Juniors
To ring or not to ring, that was the question-the answer
to be found on Junior Ring Day .
Juniors had the privilege to get spruced up for a day
which began with an Inspirational mass and the long anticipated blessing and receiving of rings.
The annual picnic In the courtyard brought the day to the
end . Everyone was together the same night to celebrate
Ring Day at an all school dance.
Jay Hinson commented, "Ring Day was a time to reminisce."
Ring around the Juniors, a pocket full of friendship,
laughs and laughs, we all had a blast.

What a Bargain!
Over a two day period seniors, juniors,
sophmomores and freshman gathered for book
buying day.
Beginning with a hearty "Welcome back" from
Sr. Mary Vanny, we preceded to various stations
where lockers were assigned, parking permlts(for
the fortunate drivers) and bus passes (for the not
so fortunate) were bought.
With smiles on our faces we headed for the
guidance department to have our ID pictures taken. After that we set out for the basement to buy
our books.
At the end of the day with our arms full of books
and high expectations about coming back to school
we set out for home.

Here!
It was a chilly night, and St. Joseph
students and alumni were to be found In
small groups In the lobby .. One might
Inquire what they were doing there.
Their mission was to pick up the 1988
Challenge yearbook, (which arrived just
In time), and to enjoy an evening of

Alert!
On Wednesday November
9, the seniors began what
would be three memorable
days from their high school
years. Half of them went to
Elkhorn, while the other half
journeyed to the Cousins
Center.
3
Wednesday started off slowly, but after a while everyone began
to relax and open up. We also sang for the first time "You Are The
Light Of The World," our beloved retreat song . To top the night
off, we viewed everyone's "favorite" movie, Ordinary People.
A very memorable part of Thursday was watching the Milwaukee Bucks practice. Thanks to fr . Brian we were able to meet
and get pictures taken with the players after practice. One player,
Tito Herford, was especially friendly to one certain retreat member, and so the "joke" for the rest of retreat was "Leslie and
Tito!"
Thursday night was highlighted by a very beautiful candle light
mass. Rick Aiello commented, " The sign of peace was the climax
of the whole experience. It made us realize how close we had
finally become ."
On Friday morning everyone ventured out Into the woods again
to find symbols of how they saw retreat. After sharing the symbols together we all received retreat crosses, and got ready to
leave. When the bus arrived, we loaded up and were on our way
back to the hum-drum of everyday life. Even though it had to
come to an end, thanks to our retreat leaders Mr. Coe, Mrs.
Rossman, Mrs. Reetzke, and Fr. Brian, everyone there shared
something really special that will be a part of them forever .

Blinded by the Light
Elkhorn retreat group of 1988 proved
they were the "light of the world" . New
friendships were made and old one's
were enhanced over the 3-day spiritual
journey. Through these times of excitement, joy, reflections, and emotions, we
were guided by Father Dave, Mrs .
Yatzek, Mr. Powers, and Mrs. Cambia .
Seniors grew both mentally and spiritually in a way that no other event could
match . For the 1988 seniors, it was a
memorable and special experience .

The curtain opened to a Volkswagen Bug, carrying the
MC's : Louis Stella, Scott Wlllkomm, and Andrew Savas.
Of the seven skits that followed, "New Olympic Sports",
"Party at Pio's", "Kung-Fu Theatre", and Jeff Peavy In a

Tell Me How To Get To Anderson Field
On a sunny day, we swept the clouds away and were
headed on our way to where the two teams would play .
Yes, our parade was on its way to Anderson field. Paul
Connolly set the pace, acting as Grand Marshall. And behind him were the traditional floats, club cars, and Queen
Jill Sorensen and her court; Melissa Davison and Joy
Jaraczewski. In addition, a couple of new twists were added . They included the Queens from the past five years who
road in the Kenosha Lakeshore Trolly . Sparky the fire dog
made a special guest appearance .
And so, this concludes yet another episode on 22nd

A Fairy Tale
Once upon a time, there was a Homecoming dance .
Everyone who bought a ticket was part of the conclusion of
the Homecoming Spirit Week festivities .
After a luxurious dinner, 69th Street became jammed
with limos, cars chauffeured by parents, and students
driving their parents cars .
The dull and dingy lobby turned into a luxurious ball
room, inhabited by beautifully dressed couples. Our very
own Cinderella, Senior, Jill Sorensen, commented , "It was
vey fun, especially being the Homecoming queen, but sad
because it was my last Homecoming here at St . Joe' s ."
At the stroke of midnight, the wonderfully dressed couples transformed back into modern day teenagers, out for
a night of fun .

Sorry?
Imagine being backstage, just minutes before the curtain goes
up for an opening night performance. Panicky people are running
around, last minute adjustments being made, and actors and
actresses going over their lines just one more time . If you can
picture this, then you can picture Noises Off.
This was not your ordinary theatre production . It was a madcap
comedy full of non-stop action and mayhem . The cast of Noises
Off portrayed the characters in a play called Nothing On . We were
taken backstage, to dress rehearsal, and to opening night where
it seemed like everything that could possibly go wrong, did .
Comedic timing was very important. With so many things happening at one time, every second was crucial. But from missing
sardines, to a torn apart telephone, the cast did an excellent job
with this production .

That was the message Mrs. Rossmann left for the cast,

It must have been the reaction of the audience also,
because the crowds increased every night .
Directed and produced by Scott Siedl, the cast and crew
members had alot of fun doing this facinating show .
"Pippin" was about a young man who tried to find his true
Identity. Only to discover that he didn't have to do anything
spectacular . He realized that true love was the best thing in
his life.
Bravo to the cast, crew, and orchestra for presenting a
very stimulating program .

Remote control! Television was the theme for " Prime
Time '89" - Senior Girls Sadie Hawkins Skits.
The curtain opened to couch potato Donica Jansen who
introduced the opening of the skits. There were no MC's
which made the skits flow freely .
As the 7 candidates were introduced , they were
presented with popcorn, T.V. Guide, and a T.V. screen to
wear .
Some of the more memorable skits were "Dance Fever", "Remote Control " , and the "Brady Bunch" . There
were also some commercials such as "Freedom Rock",
"Excedrin", and "It has Wings" .
Despite a missing candidate, the skits were produced
wonderfully, and the girls did a great job.

Students were rockin' and boppin' to the music played

Hockey Jockey
Ken has been playing hockey most of his life . He started skating at the
age of two on a lake near his house . By the age of four, he was a goalie
on a traveling hockey team . Since then, Ken has played for a Kenosha
Team, Team Illinois and finally Chicago Young Americans .
Unlike most high school students Ken has the advantage to travel
through holidays . He has been to Detroit, Boston, Madison and Canada .
During one of these trips Ken was selected to go to Colorado for Olympic
camp . This is special since only two people are chosen to go from
Wisconsin .
Usually games are on weekends, so Ken practices 4 days a week in
Lake forest. The practices last for about an hour an a half. What do they
do at practice? Ken replies, "Skate a lot ." On a more personal note,
when Ken was asked if his family disliked him being gone so much he
said, "No, I think it makes our family closer."
We all should be proud of Ken and all of his accomplishments. He's a
great guy . Todd Cambio also thought he was a great guy with his
comment, "Although Ken is one of the only people I know to play
hockey, it makes me proud to know he is as good as they come ."
Good luck in all your future endeavors . We love you!

Senior Studio
Senior Studio is set up to further educate the students who want to
use art in their careers .
In order to be a part of this class, the student must be in their 4th year
of art and have maintained
a"B" average in the art program .
Sister Honora says there's a lot of teaching involved . At the begining of
the year the students started with oil painting to learn the basics. As the
year progressed, the students branched off to individualized projects,
such as; water color, pen and ink, and sculpting.
At the end of the year their work was displayed in the Senior Art Show
along with art work from Seniors in other art classes .
Out of all this work we might come up with a Davinche or a Van Gogh .

Money, Money!
What would
we do with out
it? We need it to
eat, drive our
cars, why, we
need it to SURVIVE!
How exactly
do we get this
money? By getting a JOB, of
course.
Most
St.
Joe's students
had jobs at a
great assortment of places,
many making
over the minimum wage of
64
Juniors
$3 .35 per hour.
They liked their
jobs and usually
worked
between 3 :00 PM
and 10:00 PM .
Some
believe jobs affect
a student's performance in the
classroom and
on homework.
However, the
majority of students felt they
kept
their
grades up just
fine while working!
Driver's Seat
J

r
s
Getting your driver's license is one
of the most exciting
moments of your
life! Nothing beats
the feeling of
recieving that little
plastic card to
keep-forever !
(Hopefully!)
There is a problem though . What
kind of car will you
be driving? 224
students, 108 of
whom are licensed
drivers, took our
survey, and here is
what we call : "the
typical student ' s
car."
The typical stu-
dent's car is a black
mid-sized car with a
4 -cylinder engine .
It has AM-FM cassette or CD stereo
that usually comes
with the car. You
would also most
likely find bucket
seats, automatic
transmission, and
air conditioning .
Now you may be
thinking, "My car
doesn 't even come
near this description!", but don ' t
worry, the important thing is that
what you do drive
gets you where you
want to go.
Grade Skippers
When you skip a class in school, you
receive two detentions. Skip an entire day,
and you are handed 14 detentions.
But what happens when you skip and
entire grade?
Do you receive 2,520 detentions? Not
quite. In fact, you may get to graduate an
entire year earlier!
While this doesn't happen very often, it
has happened to two of our students, and
according to them, there are good and bad
points to skipping a grade.
Lisa Covelli, a senior, was lucky enough
to skip half of kindergarten and all of first
grade. "I thought it was cool to be the with
second graders when I was four years
old," comments Lisa about being moved
up . "but now, I'm glad because the
thought of another year of high school is
dreadful!" Lisa says she is happy about the
move now, because she can move on with
her life .
Jason Pisarik, a junior, skipped the second half of first grade and the first half
second grade . Jason had this to say, looking back on his movement, "I think it was a
good idea because at the same time I
skipped, I knew all of the stuff anyway, so it
provided me with more of a challenge ."
Both students said that there were definite downpoints to the moves, the worst
cf which was having to wait for their drivers
license, but they both feel that the advancement has been worth it because they
are comfortable where they are now .

Visitor
Silke Isabel Metzelthin, our exchange student from Wolfenbuttel,
Germany, has been in the United States for only five months, but in
that time she has learned a lot about the U.S. and our customs .
She attended St . Joe's for an entire semester and took these
classes: A.P Biology, (her favorite), Honors History, and PreCalculus . She also took Senior Studio and had an exhibit in the art
show.
Outside of school, Silke enjoys drawing, listening to music, and
playing tennis . She also enjoys pizza, a rare meal in Germany.
Silke, who has lived with the Mayews for the five months, says
she loves the United States and has enjoyed living here .

Everybody knows that St. Joe's has acquired
a breathalizer, although some may wonder exactly why we got one.
According to Ms. Smits, it was because we
were getting complaints of drinking at dances
and there were too many students getting
"busted" .
Although it has never been used, it has
helped make people think twice about going to
dances drunk - or going at all! The message
that they are trying to get across is quite clear:
If you are going to drink, don't come to the
dance.
Question 1: Do you think the
breathalizer is a good idea?
Why or why not?
Question 2: How can you overcome the breathalizer?
Amy Zelen :
"Yes because Its Ignorant to come to a dance drunk and It prevents
It".
"Gum and a lot of water."
Ernie Sanchez:
"No, because I don't think the school should get Into peoples business."
"Just act normal."
Lisa Siemon :
"No, because they don't use It anyways."
"Chew gum ."
Mo Greco:
"No, because we probably don't even have one, its just a way to scare
U5 ."
"Avoid all chaperones."
Tom Rossman :
"Yes, because the problem is changing."
"Eat peanuts."
Peter Hopkins:
"Yeah, kinda because they're trying to protect the kids but It shows
they don't trust them ."
"Squeeze past Ms. Smits at the doorway."
Mijun Kim :
"Its good only In certain circumstances. I don't think Its accurate when
you can tamper with the results ."
"Put pennies in your mouth and blow softly."
Rick Stummer:
"No, they have no right and Its stupid because it makes the dances no
fun ."

When the name Myron Glass comes to our minds, we think of a
sports superstar. Myron is only a sophomore but is on Varsity
basketball, baseball, and football.
Myron first got interested in sports at about the age of five. He
attended grade school at Holy Rosary and was active in sports
there before he joined us here at St. Joe's.
When asked what influenced him to attended St. Joe's, Myron
replied, "My parents were the main force behind my attending
school at St. Joe's, besides the athletic aspect."
Since Myron has attended St. Joe's he has won numerous
awards for his excellence inathletics, such as: All-Kenosha News
basketball team, the best defensive player award, and Aspist
leader.
Myron's plans for the future are undecided, but he would like to
attend either North Carolina or Georgetown.
Someday when Myron is playing whatever sport he ends up
playing, we can always say we knew him when.
Sophomore Slump:
Fact or Fiction
The "Sophomore Slump" is a
phrase many times used to describe
the boring yet hectic sophomore year.
Being a second year high schooler
gives students the feeling of knowing
the ropes, yet, it is a hard year because you are older then a naive
freshman but not quite a "Cool" upperclassman. But do the sophomores
think it's all that bad?
Sophomore Travis Stoner states,
"Freshman year is easier because the
classes and teachers were easier .
Suraya Mikus comments, "It is easier
than freshman year but on the other
hand it's harder because you're not
quite an upperclassman (and you
don't usually have your driver's license)-but at least I'm not a freshman
anymore."
We then asked few seniors to look
back at their sophomore year . John
Krajnak commented, "Freshman
sports were much more fun than
sophomore sports because you're
competing at your own level and not
getting the snot beat out of you by
juniors and seniors." Lance Mikus
added, "I studied more freshman
year than sophomore year because I
didn't know I didn't have to study as
much ."
Now it's up to you . Is "Sophomore
Slump" fact or fiction?

Seniors vs. Freshman
The Heated Debate
One of the burning issues of the year has been the
fact that the Freshman class has been a bit bolder
than those of past years, especially towards the Seniors . The following are just a few comments from both
Freshman and Seniors giving their opinions and possible answers to the "big problem" .
Seniors
Freshman
Mijun Kim
The Seniors aren't mean,
they're kind and considerate . I don't like that they
(freshman) don't look up
to us. It's okay as long as it
doesn't go to their heads.
Leah DeAngelis
We treat the seniors with
respect. And I don't have
anything against them .
Jamie Szarfinski
I've noticed the change
because when I was a
freshman the seniors
seemed much older . But
now that I am a senior, I
don't feel I getting the
same respect as I gave
seniors when I was a freshman .
Mollie Regner
I have respect for them
(seniors), but sometimes
they set bad examples for
us.
Jason Sturino
We (freshman) don't think
they're (seniors) as tough
as they should be . They
don' t fit the "Senior image" .
Dino Rizzitano
The freshman should respect us. But they think
they're cool.

Most Embarassing Moment
Have you ever been talking to someone only to find that they have walked away, or when
talking to someone tripped on a crack in the sidewalk? How about when you finally get to talk to
that person you've been waiting FOREVER to talk to, and your gum falls out of your mouth? We
decided to ask a few St. Joe's students what their most embarassing moment was!
Dave Rutkowski
"I was knocked over during football while I was standing, watching on the sidelines ."
Chris Krapf
"Fainting in front of the entire school during church ."
Nick Hass
"I got caught picking my nose in the bathroom."
Derek Gates
"Getting beat up in the middle of the hallway by Nickey Van Exel ... or getting a three on my
biology test!"

A lot of us find ourselves stuffing our pockets with $25-50 and and
spend most of it on

Most of the students

Thanx for the Vear
This is just a word of thanks to our great St.
Joseph teaching staff, office staff, administration, maintenance crew and kitchen crew .
To our teachers, thank you for tolerating all
of our attitudes, comments, missing assignments and late assignments . You always put
up with so much from us students and never
say a word (well we can't quite say "never" but
that's another story .) So, Give yourself a round
of applause or a pat on the back, to let yourselves know that you are appreciated . One
word of advice - be a little more lenient with
the grades. You'd really make us happy if we all
got A's a little more frequently .
To our office staff: Although not many of us
see what work you do behind the scenes, we'd
like to thank you for the envelope stuffing and
whatever else it is that you do all day, especially handing the morning tardies .
To the administration : Thanks for coordinat-
ing our school year. There's not too much that
we students know about your jobs, but you
must be doing something to earn your share of
our tuitions! Next year try to include more
Am/Fm schedules and snow days.
To our maintenance crew : I don't know how
you can maintain our school, clean up after us
slobs, and still keep a smile on your faces. You
guys are amazing! A special word of thanks to
Corey - for your many years of service to St.
Joes, the polite conversation and the catchy
little tunes you whistle through the halls.
Last but not least . ..
To our kitchen staff (including the financial
aid workers): Thanks for the nutritious luncheons, the crinkley singles as change for twenties and the inflation rate . Without you we'd all
starve(and be rich)!!
Just one final round of applause to you all.
Thanx for the year!

WORDS FROH THE WISE
Here are a few Inspiring quotes that our St. Joseph Staff has left behind for us to learn from.

OFFICE OF THE PRI CI PAL
February 27, 1989
As the Yearbook staff has worked to portray 1988-89 in pictures,
layout, capt1ons, and design, they have made many decisions.
The
first of these decisions was choosing OPTIONS as a theme to unify
the book, to highlight the school year for our student body's
reflection.
As we turn the pages of this year's edition, the life
within this building is evident.
Sister Mary Vanny-Principal
Sister Mary has been the principal of St. Joseph
High School for 6 years. Her duties Include: planning schedules, maintains all-school calendar, and
recruits and hires new teachers.
As a tradition, she writes a unique message to
give to the students of the school.
88 Academics
I pray that the memories of the
people whose lives have touched ours will inspire each one of the
St. Joseph High School family to continue that day-by-day option to
always "choose life."
The Office Staff: Nancy Chianelli-switchboard operator, Sr. Gertrude
Wissing-Principal's secretary and Shirley Werner-Office Manager. The
office staff sends out all of our mail, takes our sick calls, and sends us
home when we "don't feel good" .
Dorothy Olsen is also a part of the
office staff. She is the bookkeeper of all our tuitions, books and
fines.
StaffStaffStaffS
Cory Broekhof and Andy Mastronardi, our "Main" maintence
men. Their duties include: shoveling snow, cleaning the building,
and making sure we have heat in
the winter. Hats off to these guys!
Our Beloved Kitchen Staff: Florence Schroeder, Alma Ritchie-Kitchen Manager, and Marilyn Pignotti. These are the
women responsible for our great cafeteria lunches, and
morning snacks.

Running the Option
Zowle, pow, barn! If you think this is a scene from " Batman " , you 're
wrong. It's ruff-n-tumble Lancer football teams In action . A5 varsity coach
Steve Volssem says, "We showed signs of greatness and then we showed
signs of Ineptness." freshman coach Lyle Sego added, " We were unpredictable ... we had a lot of weird stuff happen to us."
The success of the teams belonged to many players. In the case of the
Varsity team, Dana Rogee led the team In reception yardage, while Myron
Glass dominated In rushing yardage. John forchette was the " Big Man " In
tackles and Todd Cambio, MVP, gave stability to the offensive and defensive lines, while Don fox came In second In tackles and receptions
combined . The varsity record was 1-8 .
The Junior Varsity team contributed successfully to the Varsity players'
season . In addition to accompanying the Varsity team, the J.V. fought
hard on their own, but ended with a dlsapointing 0 -8 season .
Although no one on the freshman team excelled In one particular area,
the team worked together to contribute to the success of the team . Their
Impressive record was 3 -3 .

Hole In One
One, two, three, "Fore!";the varsity golf team had the
score . Five six, seven, eight; they had a season that was
great!
With a record of 10-4, the Varsity Lancers "putted"
out a successful season . Junior Chad Salerno was low
for the team with an average of 41.2 and was voted
MVP. The golfers placed first in regionals and went on to
state placing sixth .
The hard working Junior Varsity guys got themselves
caught in "the hole" with a 4-10 season . Providing a
spark for the JV team was Junior, Peter Wokwicz with a
low average of 49 .8 . Coach Dan Chubrilo said, "We had
a lively group of guys . They worked hard and pulled off a
good season ."
Eight, seven, six, five, the '88 Golf team was alive!
"Fore", three, two, one, Lancer golfers are number one .

Outstanding determination was the key to the 1988 St.

took its toll on the Lady Lancers they kept on swinging.
Also, the team was not overflowing in numbers . When
the season opened they were short players and had to
forfeit one spot. But by mid season the positions were filled

Fancy Footwork
Fancy footwork, chest traps, and headers gave the
Lancer soccer team a unique style. Spirit, cooperation,
and hard work was the key to success for the Lancers.
As Rob Hawkins commented, "We did well because
everyone knew what they were doing, and that helps
a lot."
"He made us have the desire to win, that's what made
us an awesome team!", exclaimed Freshman Jason
Sturino when describing Tom Jachne the Lancer's new
coach .
Even though the Lancers ended the season with a 135-2 record they were not Invited to the regional tournament. Mike Manka expressed his feelings saying that
he was "deeply depressed because we deserved to go
to regionals. We beat almost all the teams that were
invited, but there's always next year ."

The Running Team
To most people the idea of running cross country is not
appealing. However, to the unusually young 1988 Lancer
Cross Country team, it was quite an experience.
In '88, injuries "ran" rampant. Stress fractures of the
lower leg seemed to be the most common . When asked
about the accident prone team, Heather Mayew replied,
"Everyone is planning on going to the banquet on crutches!"
Although cross country doesn't have the reputation of
being the most glamorous sport in the world, some unusual things can happen . Brian McTernan, captain of the
boys team, stated, "I ran barefoot in a meet because I lost
a shoe in the mud and had to take the other one off."
Doesn't that sound like fun???

Led by the states top scorer, Nickey Van Exel, the

However, the dream was once again cut short, this
time by the Marquette Hilltoppers in the champ ionsh ip

Ups and Downs
St. Joe's J.V. team had an "up and down"
season, as quoted by Coach Voissem. Their
record was 12-8. Curtis Turner and Bobby
Marsch lead the season as the highest scorers
and Derek Gates lead in rebounds. Sophmore
Mike Manka had this to say about the team,
"We had a better record than I thought it would
be."
The Freshman team had a record of 11-9.
The highlight of their season was beating rival
Milwaukee Marquette, which has never been
done by a Freshman team from St. Joe's.

Placing second in state, Dave finished with a 25-5-1

If there is one thing that the 1988-89 softball team would
change if they could, it just may be the elimination of the third
inning.
The team showed a lot of potential with seven returning players, five being seniors and two juniors, plus seven new juniors.
However, no matter how hard they tried, everything seemed to
fall apart in the third inning. But somehow the girls managed to
stick together, though sometimes it was hard, and it finally paid
off with an 11-7 win over Dominican. From there the girls traveled
to St. Mary's where they picked up another win, 9-5. Then came
regional time . The team easily slid by Wisconsin Lutheran winning
21-5 . But then the season came to a heartbreaking loss to Martin
Luther. It was one of the best games of the season, but the girls
fell short by one run with a 2-3 final.
So through freezing temperatures, heavy downpours, and mild
snowstorms, the girls continued to play, and finally proved to their
fans, their coach, Mr. Powers, but most importantly, to themselves, that they could do it.
The JV team, coached by Lyle Sego had a very good season
with a record of 7 wins and 12 losses. One of the most memorable moments was finally beating Pius.
Congratulations gals!

Just A Little tlote • • •
When I found out last year that Mrs. Reetzke wanted me to really
help with the book this year by being an editor, I thought, "Cool! It
sounds like a lot of fun!," so I accepted my position . Then almost
instantly I realized what I was in for when I spent the whole first week
(and then some) of my summer vacation at school working to finish
last year's book. But we braved the heat, the erased computer disk,
and missing copy, and somehow managed to get finished in time to
have the book for the yearbook dance. "Man!" I thought, "Am I glad
that's done! Now I don't even have to think about another yearbook
until school starts again!" WRONG!!
Welcome to the wonderful world of yearbook - It's not a class, It's
a year-long committmant. I found this out when we planned times to
meet during the summer to discuss themes, styles, organization, and
all the things that needed to be done BEFORE the first day of class.
Before school even started we had a list of possible themes, different
angles and ideas for stories, and a rough draft of the entire layout of
the book (the ladder) begun . And finally, the staff met together during
7th hour on the first day of school, and we were offi
First off, I had to assist in teaching people yearbook terms, what
different instruments we use, and the proper procedure of doing
things, as well as just what was expected of everyone . Once we had
the ground rules established, it came time to really choose a theme.
We wanted something new, a different perspective . For quite some
time we all sat there brainstorming and coming up with all we could.
When at long last, the final suggestion was squeezed out like water
from a sponge, we realized just how many options were open to us.
And that's when it hit us. Ali of us have the right or power to choose
things in our everyday life, so why not just take that idea and expand
on it? And that's how our theme OPTIONS was born .
Soon actual production work was begun . There was copy being
written, pictures cropped, and captions thought of. Ali these things put
together created the layout of a page. And so this continued, and the
book grew each day . Sure, there were times when things didn't always
run so smoothly. (Kind of hard to believe, huh guys?)(chuckle, chuckle) In fact, times when it seemed hopeless. What, from no pictures, no
Information, to missing rough drafts, I'll tell you, It wasn't always one
of the more pleasurable experiences in life . But somehow things
seemed to start picking up again . But wait, it seems as though within
the blink of an eye, the year is over - what to do? Keep working.
that's what!
And so now here I am, for more than a week after my graduation . I
have been in everyday working on this book, and now I'm writing the
closing words.
You just don't know how good It feels to complete a project as big as
this. We took some chances and turned things around a bit, and we
had fun, not to mention a lot of frustration, in the process, but I think
that I not only speak for myself, but for Mrs. Reetzke and the staff as
well, when I say I am proud to present you with the 1988-89 Challenge
Yearbook. It is a culmination of our best efforts and Ideas, and you may
like it (which I strongly urge!) or you may not, but whatever you choose
- it's YOUR option .
Thanks to the staff, and of course, our faithful and ever-so-dedicated
advisor, Mrs. Reetzke - it was an experience I'll never forget! Good
luck to next year's editor and staffi
HAVE FUN!

You Can Make a Difference
11
Ideas won 't keep. Something must be done
about them. "
(Alfred North Whitehead)
Years ago, Joseph Johnson, a young man from
Milwaukee, had a brilliant idea that his bosses
instantly rejected - as so many brilliant ideas
are.
So, he and a co-worker began to turn his idea
into a reality. The two started a company that
would make and sell wrenches with interchangeable sockets that would "snap-on" to a
wrench handle. Early mechanics liked the new
wrenches , and the company grew.
Today, Snap-on Tools Corporation is a Fortune
500 company and is known around the world
for its quality products.
You, like young Joe, can make a difference.
Snap-on Tools Corporation applauds you the members of the 1989 Graduating Class and your ideas!
