KENOSHA, WISCONSIN
Foreword
sunlight dully reflected from mottled stairs ... the glare of the floodlit
stadium . . . the laughing crowd at
the Homecoming dance . . . the crisp
formality of the Prom ... working on
the Kenews . . . drinking coke around
the juke box at the Drydock. . . . Do
you remember your year at Kenosha?

EARBOOKS are memory books, and this year's Spy is no exteption. We tried
lo get ,1 little of eYeryone and everything in it, but there are •l lot of limitations
to bla k on white. You can't hear the crowd cheering, the inflection of a teacher's
Yoice, nor the juke box at the Drydock. The Spy has attempted to picture your year ...
the year of "Hey-Bob-0-Ree-Bob" and "Open the Door, Richard" . . . the year our
conversation made no sense >'11atever; for lack of anything better, we said "Vout" and
greeted our friends with "Who do you say?" much to the disgust of our uninitiated
elders.
A little of all thi-; went into this
py, which we dedicate to you, the student,
who wi 11 remember, because you were there.
After a hectic three years of high school Stnior A cL1ss
otliccrs, Dino lanni, Annabelle Alberts and Bob Johnson

The Mary D. BradforJ High uchool is a syml::ol
of our democracy. It stands for equality among
races, creeds and religions. This public high school
brings together many boys and girls to stu<ly and
work for a common goal, that of building our
nation and providing what is needed most by the
teen-agers of our generation.

opened the scoring late in the first qu.uter when Jack

in the.: fourth quarter, John Maphis set up the winning t.tlly by snaring a Horlick pass on the Horlick

October ·L Kenosha's first jaunt abro.1d was unsuccessful, and the Reds returned from Beloit on the
short end of a 7-6 score.
Beloit scored in the first

After racking up two first downs on passes,
Pellegrin raced 13 yards for the score. Torrey's all

Midway in the sec-

Johannes passed 29 yards to Joe Burzynski for the
touchdown.
Milo Fechner's try for the point was
blocked. The second half was a see-saw battle with
most of the play between the 30 yard lines.

November 6. For three quarters the Reds played
the championship West Regents on even terms,
only to fall in the final period on two quick M.1di'On thrusts. West scored in the first period when

At the forward posts Tom Taube and
George Vanchena also saw much service. The
junior guards, Len Ciapetta and Jack mith, were
constant point getters and will provide oach
Smith a basis for next year's five. Out of all the
gloom the Reds did have two consolations. They
defeated Beloit, the future state champs, by 18
points, and also copped two straight in the regionals before losing a .J 2-39 decision to West Allis
entral which went to the semi-finals of the state

Five months of sweat, worry, practice, and planning had its re\\ ard when the Red mermen won
their ninth and htst swim meet to climax the first
undefeated du.d mrnt season in the history of
Kenosha High School. Under the ,ible guidance
of (o;tch J.tck Peel, the Redfish unleashed their
power to roll up 575 points while limiting their
011ponents to a meager 265.
opponents to ;t me;tgre 265.
In the state meet the Kenosha . wimmers almost
c.rnsed ,t m,tjor upset when they spl.tshed to second pl.tee in .t field of l l schools, only l l points
behind W;1uw.1tos.1, the perennial champion. In
the 9 event program, Kenosha brought home 3
clumpionships ;ts well as sever.d other places.
Lirry Keckler '.von the title in the 200 yd. free
style in 2 :09.2, only .6 seconds off the state record. AI.in Roedel followed with a third in the
s.ime race. Jerry mith won the st.ite individual
medley uown in i'i .9 seconds. The third win
''.ts registered by the 200 yd. free style re 1ay
c1uartet of Wells Denyes, Bob Baker, Alan Roedel,
.ind Jerry 'mith with a time of l: 15.·l. Keck'er
and Baker returned to pl.ice second aml fifth respectively in the 100 yd. free style. Wells Denyes
completed the scoring with a fourth in the 50 yd.
free style.
Fourteen new records were establi, hed during the
season. In the 'Tosa relays, Kenosha tacked up
two new state relay marks. Bill Stanley, a midyear
grad, teamed up with Roedel, Smith, and Keckler to lower the 800 yd. free relay mark from
9:26.4 to 9:05.9. Later with Denyes in the Roedel's place, the same group set a record of 3: 5 ).2
in the 400 yd. free relay. New pool and all time
Kenosha marks were set by Keckler in the 100 and
200 yd. free style, and by mith in the individual
medley.
The brilliant season was due largely to the way in
which Coach Peel combined the efforts of his
\eteran mermen, Borland, Denyes, McCarthy,
Pfeiffer, Shober, Kaiser, Keckler,
mith, and
Stanle 1 , with those of the younger aspirants
Kueny, Roedel, Berres, Baker, Roberts, Aiello,

Even if you an::n't an Andy Hardy or his feminine
equinlent in a turbulent politically-minded family,
you undoubtedly enjoyed the February class play,
"The Hardy's in Politics." Bob Johnson as the irrepressible Andy Hardy was everything a teen-ager
should not be, while the rest of the family dealt in
politics, marital troubles, and complete reforms in
hilarious succession . With the political career of the
Judge, Bob Speaker, as a background, they went
through <t storm of quarrels and reconciliations as
humorous as they were unpredictable. The able cast
of "The Hardy's" was directed by John Davies.

The R. 0. T. C. unit here is now in its thir<l year
under school sponsorship. It is open to all physically qualified boys in the school. The course is
optional, but once the boy elects to take it, he
must complete that year's work as a prerequisite
for promotion or graduation.
The three-year course covers many basic infantry
subjects, including marksmanship, drill, an<l ceremonies, scouting and patrolling, military courtesy,
customs .md discipline, map and aerial photo reading, the military history and policy of the United
"tales, the organization of the Army, basic infantry
weapons, military sanitation and first aid, and
others.
The training is supervised by the War Department through the Fifth Army's R. 0. T. . Director in Chicago, and successful completion of the
three-year course normally leads to exemption
from the first year of college R. 0. T. . work.
The unit is organized as a battalion of two companies and a battalion headquarters. Promotion ·
are based on this organization, and the unit func tions as a battalion whenever all cadets are present
at one time.

UAW-CID
PREAMBLE
We hold these truths to be self-evident, expressive of the
ideals and hopes of the workers who come under the jurisdiction of this International Union, United Automobile, Aircraft and Agricultural Implement Workers of America,
(UAW-CIO ); that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that
among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted
among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of
the governed. lf''ithin the orderly processes of such Government lies the hope of the worker.

WELL DONE!
We folks of Nash Motors want to use this space in the Spy
to say that we are as proud as punch of the 1947 graduating
class at Mary D. Bradford High School. We want to salute each
of you with a hearty and vigorous:
Well Done!
We aren't given to passing out unsolicited advice. But we
hope you won't mind if we do repeat what you have heard
many, many times and this is it ...
Yours is a great opportunity. As you travel from these halls
of learning into the work-a-day world give out with all your
strength in the never-ending struggle to keep America free. Add
your bit to the heritage which is America's and which will live
only so long as it is nourished by clear thinking, ambition and
courage.
Let us build more and more Democracy, more free enterprise, more competitive fields open to all.

PORTRAIT OF A JEWELER
By James J. Metcalfe
He operates a score in which . . . The windows always shine . . . With
many different articles . . . of delicate design
He deals in gold and silver and . . . In platinum and such . . . As well as
certain diamonds ... That seem to cost too much ... He carries brooches, lavaliers
And jewels fit for kings ... And all those sacred wedding bands . . . And
bright engagement rings . . . His trade includes engraving work . . . Of any
kind you choose ... And how to make you happy by ... Preserving baby shoes
He handles handsome watches and ... The clocks with bells that chime ...
And gladly does the best he can . . . To keep the world on time.
