Perl.ops you have seen him in the person of a photographer with a constantly flashing camera; or as
Bob Engle and Jimmy Smith, artists; or as John Shannon and Roger Hammond, advertising and business
manager respectively; or as Mina G1eselmann together with the busy folk with the subscnption
books; or perhaps, as Mary Ann Herrmann and
George Petersen, the arch-SPYS of them all. Every
one on the SPY staff did much to make it a success.
The SPY has been with us for the year, and now we,
the Staff, bring to you a pictorial record of our school
for 1940-1941 as seen by
THE SPY

self-satisfied. Here they are-the 1940 and 1941 graduates.

I am proud to show you the outstanding work of the Speech Department during this
school year. Beginning with the debate clinics throughout Wisconsin in November and
ending with the National Forensic Mee'. in Lexington, Kentucky, April 26, our students
starred continuously.
The debate team was composed of the affirmative: Eugene De Vlieg, captain, and
Helen Wicklund first speaker; and the negative: Robert Shadd, captain, and John
Shannon first speaker. This year's qL:estion-Resolved: The power of the federal government should be increased was ably defended and opposed by the debaters. They
won eight debates in the state finals, dropping only two.
The field of forensics was widely represented by many students: John Stephenson was
first in the dramatic declamation field, second to Bob W al 1man m oratory m .h s ate
tournament and also was second in the national tournament in both dramatic and
oratorical declamation, losing by one point in both cases. Robert Waltman won first
place in both original oratory and oratorical declamation won h:rd place m he
American Legion State Oratorical Conl'"·st, and qualified for the nationals. Mildred Biorn.
last year's winner of the state title in dramatic declamation won first title in humorous
declamation this year. Edwin Mulhulland. a newcomer this year, won second in the
district contests in Kenosha and Milwaukee. Robert Shadd and Eugene De Vlieg. two
of the best extemporaneous speakers in our history, did very well this year. De Vlieg
took second place honors in the state tourney in extempore, and second in the nationals
in a new field, "Americanism," which is speaking extemporaneously over the radio.
He also won fourth place in the nationals in extemporaneous speaking, Shadd winning
fifth m the same field. Shadd came in third in the State in extempore.
Other squad members: John Shannon. oratory· Shirley Mostove. who placed !if'.h in
the state finals with her dramatic declama ion and qualified for the nationals: Irene
Bauman, humorous declamation; Juanita Davies and Betty Rasmussen, drammic
declamation.
Apnl 4 and 5 added laurels to our school. Our forensic squad was host to the Southern
District State Contest, and our coach Mr. John D. Davies. did a wonderful job in makmg
the entire program a complete success, one to be remembered for years to come. We
captured four out of the five possible first place letters, and every Kenoshan enjoyed
the meet tremendously!
This year's national tourney at Lexington was the largest in N.F.L. history. Over 800
contestants represented all of the 48 states. Kenosha was the highest scoring team in
the entire contest. W e placed fourth in the nation, the rank determined by accumulative
totals.

Big Eight Football
Kenosha vs. Sheboygan at Sheboygan.
Score: Kenosha 7, Sheboygan 7.
Bill Scholz made the touchdown and Bob Strupp kicked the
extra point. Kenosha outplayed Sheboygan and should
have won by 12 points.
Kenosha vs. Madison East at Kenosha.
Score: Kenosha 32, East 0.
With substitutes playing all of the second half, Kenosha
trounces a second-rate East team. Kenosha finds a great
pass combination in Les Salerno to Fortino.
Kenosha vs. Madison Central at Kenosha.
Score: Kenosha 13, Central 6.
Although the newly-installed lighting system failed in the
second half, Kenosha came through with its best game of
the year defeating Central, the ultimate Big 8 champions.
Kenosha vs. Racine Park at Racine.
Score: Kenosha 0, Park 0.
Only several goal line "stands" kept Kenosha from being
scored upon. Park had several scores called back because
of penalties and the Red Devils came close to joining the
ranks of the defeated.
Kenosha vs. Madison W est at Madison.
Score: Kenosha 0, West 13.
Kenosha couldn't get together for a score, but put up a good
fight against a "hot" West team.
Kenosha vs. Beloit at Beloit.
Score: Kenosha 6, Beloit 18.
Kenosha couldn't get going against a much smaller team.
They were called back many times because of penalties.
60 l
Kenosha vs. Racine Horlick at Kenosha.
Score: Kenosha 12, Horlick 6.
With a homecoming crowd at the stadium Kenosha come
back strong to win 12 to 6.
Kenosha vs. Janesville at Kenosha.
Score: Kenosha 31, Janesville 0.
Kenosha again proves that they like the home field best b
trouncing a larger but inexperienced Janesville team.
After a good start, Kenosha sags in the middle but finishes
strong to have a fair season and "cops" a third place tie
with Park of Racine. The Red Devils did not win a game•
away from home and did not lose one at home.

Rufus King 34
Rufus King squeezed past Kenosha in the opening game of the
season at Milwaukee. Although Hartman led the scoring with
12 points, the well balanced attack of Rufus King proved too
strong for Kenosha. Wierschem contributed 9 points.
Kenosha 35
Sheboygan 32
"Gabby" Hartman set the pace with 19 points as the Red
Devil cagers defeated a strong Sheboygan Central team, defending champions of the Fox River Valley circuit. In winning
this, the second game of the season, Coach Ben Trewyn's
basketeers also avenged last year's setback at the hands of
this same Sheboygan team.
Kenosha 15
Alumni 26
In the last "tune up" game before the regular schedule
Kenosha was soundly trounced by a vastly superior alumni
team composed of former high school players. The team tried
hard, but they could not overcome the terrific disadvantage
in height.
64 :~
Kenosha 18
Racine Park 20
Park shaded the Red Devils in their first conference game.
Leading Kenosha's offense were Hartman with 8 points and
Kufrin with 5 points. After leading at the half, Kenosha sagged
to fall behind. Kufrin's free throw in the last quarter was the
only Kenosha score in that period.
Kenosha 22
Madison Central 17
Powered by Hartman's 14 points the Redmen got together for
their first conference victory over the defending champions
of the Big Eight. Although lacking the height of the Kenoshans,
the Centralites made it plenty tough for the local boys.
Kenosha 21
Madison East 32
After an erratic first half our Red Devil cagemen crumbled
to lose to East 32-21. Joe Wierschem and Norman Hartman
(together) coined 14 points in the second half. The team coul
not overcome East's lead at the half.
Kenosha 39
Janesville 18
Bouncing back from the defeat that Madison East handed them
the week before, the Redmen proved their merit by soundly
trouncing an inexperienced Janesville team 39-18. Hartman
again led the attack.
Kenosha 25
Racine Horlick 22
In a hard fouqht battle the Red Devils came out on top again,
making it two in a row for the home team. With the scoring
well spread out the team out-lasted a good Horlick team.
Kenosha 23
Madison West 16'
Although not looking any too well, the team outplayed an
aggressive West team 23-18. Beating the Madison boys on
their home floor gave Kenosha its third win in a row.
Alumus, Gene Englund, basketball player; graduated from Kenosha High School in
1936; set Big Eight scoring record for a .2"'Jame schedule with 143 points; class of
'41 at the University of Wisconsin; member of All Big Ten and All America teams
for two years; seconly only to Joe Stamp£ of Chicago in Big Ten scoring with 163
points; good defensive player and good student; married; will play professional
basketball with Oshkosh All-Stars after graduahon.
Kenoshu 33
Racine Park 22
In this game our Redmen started slowly and without too much
"oomph," but their class asserted itself undeniably m the last
two frames when they started a scoring blitzkrieg and turned
the game into a rout. This win evened the score with Park for
the previous defeat they handed us. Co-starring in this assault
on the Parkers were Louie Larson and "Gabby" Har•man with
14 points apiece.
Kenosha 14
Madison Central 25
Lackmg the touch of the previous games our Red Devils were
completely outplayed by a small, seventh place Central team
for the upset game of the season. Kenosha's hopes for a title
took a surprising setback in this game.
Kenosha 26
Madison East 22
Looking much better than last week the Redmen avenged a
defeat by this same team earlier in the season. Kenosha really
had to work for this one with everyone contributing to the
victory.
Kenosha 28
Madison West 32
After a hard battle the Reds were finally shaded by a tough
Madison outfit. Failure to overcome a halftime deficit cost
Kenosha this game and a chance for the Big Eight title.
Kenosha 25
Janesville 24
Janesville almost won their first game of the season in a fast
and furious thriller with a lot of last minute scoring by both
teams. They're still talking about this one down in Janesville.
Kenosha 32
Racine Horlick 35
A little tired from the game the night before the team lost a
heartbreaker by 3 points. This closed the season for the Reds
with a pretty fair record.
Regional Tournament at Portage, Wisconsin:

After winning the Regional Tournament the Red Devils advanced to the State Tournament, the only Big Eight school to
reach it. Kenosha dropped the first game to Monroe 28-27, but
won the second game for the consolation honors by beating
Ellsworth 34-17. All in all the team made a good showing this
year, and we are all proud of them.

Swimming
Kenosha usually has had good swimming teams, but this year
something happened. With few veterans returning Kenosha
couldn't seem !o get going. Sophomores composed most of the
team and, with the experience they gained this year, should
be hard to beat next year. In spite of the fact that Kenosha
didn't win a meet this year, Robert Lubeck, diver, took second
place in the State meet. Lubeck also swam in the sprints during the year and was a consistant point getter.
Track
Again this year Kenosha is host to the Big Eight track meet.
Kenosha was runner-up to Madison West last year. Several
letter men have been held over from last year, and together
with some good Sophomore trackmen, should make up a wer
rounded team. Early season meets have shown that Kenosha
can count on these pointmakers:
Les Furgeson
Johnny Brnak
Ed Adomowicz
Steve Scuglic
Ken Hendrickson
Ed Radykowski
Ken Hanson
Joe Szeczlonski
Alex Katovich
Tennis
Kenosha's record so far this year:
Won from Racine .......................... 7-0
Won from South Milwaukee. . . . . . . . ...... 5-3
Lost to Lake Forest ........... .......... .... 3-5
Won from Waukegan ...................... 6-2
Won from Racine Park ..................... 4-2
Lost to Racine Park ........................ 2-4
There are two matches, with South Milwaukee and Racine
Horlick, left tc be played before the state and conference
tournaments.
In the state tournament, the singles winner from last year will
return and probably repeat his victory. Strong teams from
Milwaukee and the Suburban League will probably take most
0£ the laurels.
In the Big Eight tournament, last year's first and third singles
players will be back to fight ii out for the championship with
Jack Glaves, Kenosha, who finished fourth last year. Both of
these players have defeated Glaves this year and none of the
coaches concede Jack an outside chance to place this year.
Mr. Bayler strings along with Glaves, however, and picks him
to win. Twice in the last three years Kenosha's doubles team
has led the Big Eight. This years team has not shown up as
well as either of those teams, but Mr. Bayler gives them a
fighting chance.
Von Demergian is the number two singles man while Don
Lippert and Elden Chambers form the doubles team.

Trident Club
The girls' swimmmg club is open to Junior Life Savers only.
In addilion to that requirement members must be able to swim
one length of the pool-25 yards m IS seconds, swim at
k'<lst four strokes in good form, and execute a running front
dive in good form. The club has 27 active members.
Bowling
A bowling class meets each Monday after school. The girls
assemble at the bowling alleys and bowl two games each
week. No one is allowed to take more than one semester of
bowling because of the increasing demands for membership
in the class.
Each Thursday a dancing class is conducted in both gyms
with boys and girls participating. The students for the first half
of the period enjoy square dancing and social dancing, while
the last half is spent playing individual games.
Tennis is a part of 1he regular gym program for girls. It is
a semester course m which girls learn the correct forms for the
fundamental strokes needed in playmg tennis. Scoring and
rules are also discussed.
Like tennis, golf has become a regular physical education
activity for girls. In class the participants study golf etiquette,
clubs, and shots. They use their own clubs and cotton balls
supplied by the school. To get a credit for this class, each girl
must play at least one game on a regular golf course.
Girl Scouts
At least one of .he varied Senior Girl Scout groups will appeal
to any normal gJrl. The interests of the girls decide how many
groups of each type there will be. There are at present four
mariner ships and two outdoor groups as compared to one
social group, one group working on music appreciation, one
on arts and crafts, and one on dramatics.
Gym
Ir .h_ sen.or games classes girls are more free to choose their
games than are individuals in regular gym classes. Equipment for ping-pong, dartball, shuffleboard, badminton, rmgtoss, horseshoes, pitching, and loop tennis is laid out, and the
girls play what they wish to. Occasionally the whole class
engages in a game of paddle tennis.
