Girls' Sports
GIRL SCOUTS
Any girl who is interested in any of the activities of the
varied Girl Scout program may join. The groups include
arts and crafts, dramatics, and literature, music appreciation, outdoors, and Mariners. A monthly get-to-gether
is held with the program furnished by one or more of the
groups.
BOWLING CLUB
The purpose of the Bowling Club is to teach girls the
principle of the game. They get actual practice on teams
in a regular high school bowling league which meets once
a week. It is great sport and the girls like it.
TENNIS CLUB
Zing! Zing! Another tennis tournament is in progress.
In the Tennis Club, the girls improve their form and
technique through compeiition in real matches. Any girl
who feels she has sufficient ability to enter may do so.
•
26
GYM
The groups in regular gym classes include Trident.
golf, and senior games.
The Trident Club is composed of all girls whose main
interests are life-saving, swimming, and diving. There
are certain requirements to fulfill such as passing the
standard tests and being able to swim five different strokes
in good form.
Golf is taken as a regular gym subject. If the weather
permits, the girls, after they have become acquainted
with the clubs and method of scoring, practice on the golf
course. One game must be actually played in order to
pass the subject.
Senior Games is less strenuous activity than gym. In
this course the girls take part in badminton, volley ball,
shuffleboard, dart-ball, horseshoes, and a mild form of
golf.

Forensics
With Gestures
This year's forensic triumphs maintain the high standards of speech achievements
which have been set by students coached by John D. Davies.
Debating held the forensic light during the greater part of the first semester with
the topic of government ownership and operation of the railroads as the debatable
subject. The first team was composed of Robert Shadd with Harold J. Plous as captain
on the affirmative side of the question and Dick Anderson with Eugene De Vlieg as
captain on the negative side.
The climax of the first semester's debating came when Shadd and Plous won first
place at the Wheaton College invitational tournament in the Affirmative field. When
Plous graduated at mid-semesters, Shelby Peterson took first affirmative while Shadd
was made captain of that team. While working together Shadd and Plous chalked up
twenty-six victories and dropped five. In the early part of the season the Negative had
had trouble finding an adequate case, but they at the end of the semester placed first
in the National Forensic League's state contest.
The alternate debate team comprised of Helen Wicklund, Mary Ann Herrmann,
George Nelson, and Leo Molinaro debated in many interscholastic contests as well as
practice meets and earned commendation from all the teams they had met.
In the individual speech contests, Le Verne Birchard and Mildred Bjorn led the
state by winning first place in dramatic and humorous declamation respectively. At
the tournament which was held at St. Johns Military Academy both girls were highly
praised by the judges for the interpretation they gave to their pieces.
Robert Shadd placed highest for our team in the extempore speaking contests.
Shadd was ranked third in the state thus winning an N. F. L. banner for our school.
Tho Shadd only became active in forensic circles at the beginning of the season, he
promises to be one of the mainstays in next year's debate team.
John Stevenson, another newcomer in speech activities, won a third place banner
in the state dramatic declamation contest. Stevenson should become Kenosha's leading
orator next year.
Robert Waltman in oratorical declamation and original oratory was rated with the
leaders in all contests he entered, as was Irene Bauman with her humorous reading.
Our school was further in the limelight by being rated as one of the highest in the
state by the American Legion Oratorical contest judges. Eugene De Vlieg represented
Kenosha there and thus secured an excellent rating by winning three first's. De Vlieg
also competed in the state N. F. L. extemporaneous speaking contests.
Helen Wicklund and William Bode were Kenosha delegates to many interscholastic
speech tournaments as well as to the state contests. Both were given high ratings in the
contests they entered.
There is however one more speech contest this year. That is the state open tournament. All schools in the state are eligible to enter. This meet presents the last chance
for forensic students to qualify for the national meet at Terra Haute, Indiana. At present
La Verne Birchard, Mildred Bjorn, and William Bode, because of his last year's record,
are eligible for the nationals. It is to be hoped that this last meet will qualify many
more local contestants.
Besides debating in competition, the first team also provided debates for many
local clubs and churches .

May we present:
Superintendent G. F. Loomis - managing another Bradford Show. And the chief puppeteers of the piece, Principal
G. N. Tremper, his Associate D. T. John, and Assistant S. W. Ward- accomplished artists of long experience.
Here is a show that every puppeteer can recommend. Skillfully trained, indeed, the members of the puppet crew
seem almost ready to dance off by themselves, appearing on our stage with all the finesse of the veteran managers.
Remarkable, we think, the cleverness and skill that manifests itself in every act which performers from the language, science, arts and commerce departments will present for your amusement. Physical prowess? Watch those
scenes which have been trusted to the agile hands of our department of physical education! And by the way, the household and the manual arts puppeteers are held responsible for all those heart-touching domestic scenes!
Our puppeteering staff deserves curtain calls a-plenty for this year's production and for the show's much heralded
success.

In Memoriam
NELLIE MALONEY
As there are persons from whose loss we never recover, so are there persons
whom we never really lose. Although Miss Maloney no longer sits at her desk in
Room 111, her standards are immortalized in countless Kenosha homes. There has
gone from her in a hundred directions a spirit of gentle courtesy, of accurate work,
of infallible honesty which cannot die.
From the age of 16 to the day of her death Miss Maloney taught. Five decades
of pupils graduating from under her loving tutelage have carried her ideals afar.
Each of her day's work demonstrated all of the dignity and fulfilled alt of the
opportunities for achievement inherent in her profession.
"That which should accompany old age as honor,
love, obedience, troops of friends she had."
For LA MARR FITCHETT
They are not gone who pass
Beyond the clasp of hand.
-Hugh Robert Orr

Epilogue
The play's the thing and now it's done;
The puppeteers are proud
Of all the praise their work has won,
The plaudits of the crowd.
The scripts are closed, the lines are played,
The puppets all depart,
Fair Education takes a breath,
And hopes to gain your heart!
