Bradford's Student Council
Under the advisership of Miss Hackel and Mr. Story, the Student Council, the governing body at Bradford, had a busy year.
At their weekly Mondy evening meetings, a variety of items were discussed, acted upon, and accomplished. All of the items are
too numerou to mention in so short a space as allowed here, but some of the council's major accomplishments were as follows:
I) the support to defeat Bill '859A' (Support Lakefront), 2) the practice of selling breakfast rolls before school began in the
morning, 3) the contribution of $50.00 to the junior class and $300.00 to the Bradford Scholarship Fund, 4) the attempts to alleviate the Bradford parking problem and to revise the Student Handbook, 5) the changing of the Constitution to allow for midyear delegate elections, 6) the making of posters for the Easter Seal Telethon, 7) the bike ride for the muscular dystrophy campaign, 8) the sponsoring of "classic" films in the auditorium, and 9) the approval of the proposed Students' Bill of Rights. All in
all, considering that these were just SOME of the items tackled by our council, Bradfordites cannot complain about a student
apathy and complacency on the part of EVERYONE. Some, yes.
One of the active taking it easy!
Don't they look involved!
Mr. Brooks peaks to council on Club Moratorium.
Council members listen attentively.

Sophomore Cheerleaders, '71-72
t\
This year ten sophomore girls were chosen as
cheerleaders. The girls were divided into a red
squad and a black squad . This was to compensate
for the two sophomore football teams . During the
basketball season, both squads cheered as one unit.
They were kept busy going to the many games . The
new sophomore spirit kept many bus trips lively.
The girls attended baseball games in the Spring .
Besides cheering at sports activities, the sophomore
cheerleaders made new uniforms . They consisted of
red vests and black culottes .

1972 Spy Staff
con isted fo a group of volunteer students who donated one hour of their time per day to produce the book you are now reading.
The goals we set for ourselves were honorable: to finished a 240 page flip-flop book (we hope it didn't turn out to be the latter)
with cover and pages graphically and pictorially designed to carry out our theme "A mirrored image, a visual adventure." We,
indeed, wanted this book to mirror, to be an image of ALL activities of the 1971-72 school year. We realized before we began
that we couldn't accomplish everything in perfect design and style, but we really tried. Special thanks must again go to Mr. Richard Karrels, Spy's art adviser, to Mr. Mlodzik, Spy adviser, and to Monica Gemignani and Sally Scriver, Co-editors. We sincerely hope that you like this yearbook: comments for its improvement will be pleasantly accepted in the Bradford sauna, the
Spy office.

Spanish Club
The Spanish Club had one of the most active ones that they have
had in years. Their first adventure was a balloon sale at homecoming; in addition, they also nominated a King and a Queen, instead of
building a float. To help decorate the lunchroom, they contributed a
colorful and appropriate bulletin board. At Chri tmas the Club
showed its true spirit by giving a food basket and a turkey to a needy
family. They also gave the family a Christmas party, including a
Spanish pinata. Throughout the year, the Club sponsored bake
sales, and in December they held a taco and ice skating party. The
Club was sorry th'.lt their annual trip to Mexico had to be cancelled
this year because of the changes in our academic claendar. On its
traditional trip to eat out 'on the town', they chose a Spanish restuarant in Milwaukee called "El Matador." The Club finished the
year with two very succes ful taco sale . A very good year, indeed;
congratulations.

Ushers Club
is a service club for Bradford High School
and the community of Kenosha. This year,
Mr. Mlodzik supervised the work schedule of the club when the school and community needed the auditorium for concerts, plays, lectures, travelogues, etc. The
club was divided into two teams to make the work load easier for the student volunteer members. The club exists for service alone - members sell and collect tickets, distribute programs, and co-ordinate their activities with Mr. Hofmann's
Stage Guild to ensure promptness and efficiency for successful school and community performances in the auditorium . A monetary reinbursement is given to
each member of the Stage Guild and Usher Club for each activity (excluding
school activities) during the school year.

Jazz Ensemble
·The 1972 Jazz Ensemble (better known as JE) played better
according
to reliable musical sources - than ever during this school year. Throughout
the year on Tuesday evenings, they held a class called the "Jazz Workshop." On January 26 the Ensemble held a jazz concert
featuring Woody Herman and his "Young Thundering Herd." A few days later they traveled to Delaven and participated in a
jazz festival in which they took top honors, first place. Shortly thereafter they also attended Polaski in Milwaukee for variations
in jazz concert. The group, as usual, sponsored the annual variety show "Try It, You'll Like It". Music selections in the show included such numbers as "MacArthur Park", "Impetus", and "Empathy" (composed by drummer Steve Houghton). "I:"heir final
big event of the year featured Rich Matteson, a jazz artist, clinician, arranger, and concert soloist who was accompanied by both
the Bradford and Tremper jazz emsembles. The ensemble finished the year by performing at several Kenosha junior high

On June 10th, the first practice of the Bradford Summer Recreation Band took place in the Bradford auditorium. This was
only the start of hard work and fun for the 97 band members. After weeks of sectionals and marching , the band participated in
Racine's Independence Day Parade and Kenosha' s annual Ice Cream Social.
On July 18th, the band placed first in the high school competition at the Kenosha Musica Round-Up . Following this, the band
marched in the Cudahy Parade before going to St. John's Military Academy in Delafield for a week of hard work on their field
drill , concert music, and marching. In mid-Audust they competed in the Championship Band Tatto at the State Fair in West Allis and won the Governor's Trophy . Three days later the band left for Minneapolis, Minnesota, and were the featured band at the
Schmidt Music Clinic.
When the School year began, they marched during halftimes at our football games. They also marched at Oshkoshsand Carthage' s homecomings. At our home basketball games, the band formed two swing bands which alternately played.
After the Winter Concert which featured D. Eugene Reausseau, a great saxophone player, they practice for Band-0-Rama
directed by Dr. Robert Reynolds, guest conductor from the University of Wisconsin (Madison). Then came the Variety Show,
"Try It, You'll Like It" , held on March 17 and 18 . The Band Contest was held on April 8th at Tremper. During the Spring Concert (May 25) the band premiered a piece written for them by Composer Vaclav Nelhybel. On May 28th the band marched in the
Memorial Day Parade. What a year - once again - for a Grreeaaaatt musical group.

Concert Band
The Concert Band had a very exciting and eventful year. During the football season, they marched their award-winning
field drills. They also backed our basketball team by playing in pep band during the basketball season. On February 19 and 20
they participated in the annual Band-0-Rama. On April 8 they received an excellent rating
in keeping with their State Fair
award winning performances
at the group contest. They presented their annual concert on May 12. Already the band is making plans for the next school year: in conjunction with the orchestra, they are planning a November 7, 1972 concert.

Drama And Forensics
Club
And now, how shall I haunt him?
The Drama Club is concerned Ultimately with becoming invo lved behind the scences of a play as well as being in a play.
The group attends plays together in other cities a well as in
Kenosha. Discussions of the plays were held at the meetings of
the Club. There was an opportunity to create scenes which were
presented at the meetings. Impromptu acting was also tried. In
other words, techniques may be worked within an atmo phere
other than that of the classroom.
The Forensics Club sent 11 students to compete in the State
Forensics Contest in Madison, Wi consin on April 22nd . There
they competed with students from all over the state. To qualify
for the state one must earn an A rating at the subdistrict and
district contests. The students who earned A's were: Sandra

Library Aides==
In our library there are seventeen volunteers who are referred to as library aides. These students unselfishly shelve
books, take inventory, check classification orders, and assist the librarians in doing the many tasks which are needed
to maintain an efficient library system. Much credit should be given to them for the many long hours of patient shufning and reshufning of books, books, and books.
One library aide very wisely said to one of our Spy reporters who was gathering copy: "I visit my friends occasionally (this girl was a lover of books) merely for the purpose of looking over my library." Such an attitude is characteristic of this fine group of helpers.

Y.I.A.
This year the Red Cross Club changed
its name to Y .I.A. , Youth In Action . During the year, the club planned money raising projects such as car washes and bake
sales to increase the dollar figure in their
treasury. With this added revenue, they
bought various items and put them in
friendship boxes which they sent to the
homes of needy Kenoshians. At the end of
the school year, they gave a $50.00 scholarship to a deserving student. In addition,
the members also took some of their money from the treasury to buy Easter cards
which they, in turn, sent to fellow Kenoshians in the military services . We feel this
gesture must have brightened up many
servicemen's holiday season. A fine gesture, a fine club.
President Al takes full responsibility for printing this picutre of the club's adviser , Miss Marie Magada,

The purpose of the Alumni Association is twofold: 1) To help Bradford graduates to keep in touch with fellow classmates, and
to sponsor the annual reunion banquet. The annual reunion honors the 25th year and 50th year classes; nevertheless, other classes, such as the 30th year and 40th year groups, are also encouraged t0 join in on this gala annual affair. The second purpose of
this association is as follows: 2) To give scholarships to two deserving Bradford students for each school year. Dues for this organization are $2.00 per year. Dues pay for the spring and fall issue of the annual Alumni Newsletter. Hall Monitors
Spy asked several hall monitors this question: "Suppose you are on your post
and someone sneaks behind you and wraps his burly arms around you. What
would you do?" The most unique answer received from one monitor was: "If someone did that to me, I'd say, let's go to my
place, honey!"
Although this humorous anecdote doesn't show the main function of the hall monitors - to see that school regulations are
enforced
it is an example of the many strange things that happen to these people. They do, indeed , get in some pretty tough
jams because of their responsibilities, but they do a remarkable job.

An old man at an evening function bowed hi head and wept quietly but
copiously while a young woman rendered the plaintive ballad, "My Old Kentucky Home."
The hostess tiptoed up to him and inquired tenderly: "Pardon me, are you
a Kentuckian?"
"Nay, madam," the tearful one replied, "I'm a musician."
Without any tears from audiences who heard Bradford's choirs sing, the
1971-1972 Bradford choirs enjoyed a triumphantly successful musical season
once again. Under the direction of Mr. Roger Tweiten, the choirs opened
their singing season at the annual Christmas Concert. All three choirs, plus
our orchestra, participated in the choral evening which, quite traditionally,
was highlighted by the living Christmas Tree. (See page 38 and 39.)
The choirs continued singing well during the entire school year. At the district contests, the Sophomore choir received a superior rating in class B. The
A Cappella and Girl's Choir also received a superior rating in cla s A. These
A rating were demonstrated to Kenosha Audiences at the May 14 Spring
Concert.
On May 18 Bradford's A Cappella traveled to Minneota and then on to
River Falls, Wisconsin, to help dedicate the Melvin Wall Memorial
Amphitheater on May 20. The entire trip, lasting four days, capped off a
highly successful singing year.

Devilettes
Devilettes is a Bradford drill team which exists to
entertain people with their marching precision. At
each semi-monthly meeting, the girls discussed business matters and began practicing
they perfected
old routines and worked on new drill team exercises .
During the year, the girls performed at several home
basketball games, at various school related activitie ,
and in Kenosha's Memorial Day parade. Through
bake sales and car washes , the team tends to purchase
new uniforms for the upcoming season. Each year the
team seems to improve the precision of their unit; next
year, we assume, will be another entertaining season
for them.

opinion, 'very enjoyable.' This opinion was largely formulated because of the superb performances of the "Boys In The
Band" who played key roles in Tom Niccolai's "Sweet Polly Yadinski" skit and because the Bradford Swingers were seen
on stage for the first time by the Bradford student body. Tom Niccolai and Fred Wamboldt were the MC's for the show.
We, of the Spy staff, feel that the pictures on these pages will tell the rest of the story very well. We also, at this particular
time, thank you for buying the book that you are reading now. The assembly was successful, wasn't it?

Unified School Board Of 1972
Mr. Julius Goldstein , Mr. Herbert Lepp, Carroll Rikli, and Dr. Raymond E. Peltier. (Missing are Mrs. Eunice Boyer, Mrs. Jackie Ball, and George H.
Pinzger .)
The Unified School Board of Kenosha for 1971-72 consisted of Carroll K. Rik Ii, president; Herbert Lepp, vice-president; Mrs. Eunice Boyer, clerk; Dr. Raymond E. Peltier, treasurer; Mrs. Jackie Ball, Mr. Julius Goldstein, and George H. Pinzger. (Former President Paul Turner resigned on Oct. 6th). Although
board actions during the school year were too numerous to mention here, we do feel that the following are typical examples of the important decisions which the
Board had to make for the betterment of our school; I) approving a record district budget ($21,692,858), 2) voting to provide additional transportation for public
and parochial students who live more than two miles from school, 3) approving the expansion of the school lunch program, 4) appointing committee to study civic center proposal, 5) deciding upon the new school boundary changes for 1972-73, 6) passing the general changes, revisions, and updating of district policies (first
revision since 1954: , and 7) approving the 1972-73 school calendar. We at Bradford feel that this board has indeed, worked 'overtime' on timely and decisive
items. Our gratitude, friends; Keep up the excellent effort.

The successful businessman must not be only willing to gamble, but he
must know what he is doing. He should be like Lady Godiva. ~e put all
she had on a hor e. She didn't win, but she sure showed."
Many may think that this quotation had nothing to do with the pictures shown on these pages. It does though.
These people put everything into their daily efforts to make Bradford the best high school in Wisconsin. Their efforts,
unlike the well-known Godiva, are neither seen or appreciated by most; however without them the school would not
be able to function as smoothly as it does. The Spy staff says again, "Thank you, workers."

Caught in the act of looking busy!
Green, who was the local athletic
champion, had been holding forth at
great length. None of the club regulars
could do anything about it. But presently one of the visitors looked up.
"I'll bet," he said cheerfully, "ten
dollars that I can wheel something in a
wheelbarrow from one street lamp to
the next, and you can't wheel it back!"
Green looked him over
not a very
hefty sort of bloke. He thought of bags
of cement, bricks, and old iron, and
concluded that whatever the stranger
could do he could better.
"Taken", he said.
The stranger smiled, and with a couple of witnesses they set out. A wheelbarrow was borrowed and taken to the
nearest street lamp.
The stranger rubbed his hands,
picked up the handles. "Get in, Green

HOW TO WRITE A SUCCESS STORY
Let's start with a brief description of the Hero of your Success Story.
He or she can be a machine operator, a housewife, a store clerk, a
teacher, a clergyman, a union official, or engaged in any activity you
may select. To write a truly successful story, however, you must endow
the Hero with four essential characteristics.
The Hero of a Success Story has a willingness to learn. For the Hero
there is no final graduation-only a series of Commencements that bring
with them new lessons to be mastered.
The Hero of a Success Story has an unending desire to succeed in
whatever he undertakes. The phrase "just as good" is not in his vocabulary. "Better than" are his favorite words and the yardstick by which
he measures his work.
The Hero of a Success Story welcomes responsibility. For just as
exercise develops muscles, so responsibility develops the man or woman.
The degree of your Hero's success will be governed by the responsibility
he or she is willing to shoulder.
The Hero of a Success Story always gives more than he gets. He is
too busy with important things to measure accurately his own worth.
His greatest s·atisfaction comes from being of real service to his fellow
men.
It is never too early nor too late to begin your Success Story. Writing
it will not be easy because success is never easily captured. But your
chances of authoring your own Success Story are greater in the United
States than they would be in any other country in the world .

When Only the Best Will Do
When you ' re develop i ng a young talent. the best is none too good. That's why Leblanc artist-grade
instruments are recommended for students. One of their distinguishing characteristics is LOVE; the
love of the Leblanc family, whose inborn musical genius and sense of the musically-correct has
guided them for generations in their demand for excellence. And it was their love of music that inspired them to establish the first acoust i cal research laboratory, where scientific pri nci pies were
applied to develop the most superb instruments. both
acoustically and mechanically, in the world today. It
wi 11 give the young player the confidence he needs to
fulfill his own dream of musical accomplishment.

Commencement Exercise Held
The Bradford seniors - 535 of them
received their high school diplomas at the I 12th commencement exercise held at the
Carthage College Field house on June 7th , 1972. Mr. James Fowler, Principal, presided over the exercise. The class chose as its
class motto "Immortality is all we seek ." Class colors were scarlet and gold , and the class nower was the bluebells of Scotland .
The program began with the traditional Pomp and Circumstance processional played by the Bradford Concert Orchestra, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by senior class president Jim Sepu lveda. After the "Star Spangled Banner" the invocation
was delivered by the Revererend Ka rl Acker who was followed by Mr. Fowler who gave the welcome address to the capacityfilled fieldhouse . Jim Sepulveda then delivered the commencement message titled " Forever. " The Sophomore, Girls', and A

Unlike last year's SPY, in which we missed taking a picture of the sophomore team, the staff made a special effort this year
for two reasons: l) becasue we goofed last year, and 2) because Mr. Helwig's sophomores won the Conference Championship
with a 9 win-3 loss record. The team's leading pitcher was Gary Baase (5-1 record), and the leading hitter was Dave Warnock
with a 381 average. Coach Helwig, in summarizing the boys' perforamnces during the season, said, "We had some outstanding
individuals who showed me that they could play first class baseball when the 'chips were down', but, all in all, it was a team effort. For example, in our last three games we outscored our opponents 34All we can say is, "Not bad, indeed!"

The story, which is based on the diary written by Anne Frank and
spans the years 1942 and 1945, is heart warming and heart breaking.
The Frank family and friends' strength and faith, pulled them
through almost three years of fear of detection and almost complete

Although the record (1-8-1) doesn't show it, Bradford's golf team steadily improved during the season because golfers 3
through 8 started to come around behind the one-two punch of John Mattioli and Jim Paskiewicz, the two golfers who were selected dual winners of the MVP A ward. Perhaps the highlight of the golfing season was on May 16th when Bradford played the
regional and sectional champions, Racine Park, and tied Park with a 332 total. Jim Paskiewicz was the medalist for the meet
with an even par 36; he knocked in a wedge shot from 120 yards on the 335 yard second hole for an eagle. Greg Matarrese was
selected as the 1973 captains; Tom Greco was selected as the most improved golfer for 1972. Coach Karakash has some finelooking juniors in Greg Matereese, Joe Kuda, Dale Landree, Vince Chambers, and Chris Pacetti; in sophomores Barry Bennett,
Steve Hein, Jim Puder, Dennis Vegel, and Phil Onosko. Perhaps that record will get bent in 1973; we will see.

This year's baseball team ended with a 6 win-7 loss record for the best
record in several years. Leading Bradfords hitting were John Tracy with a
.400 pt. and Jeff Grimes who hit .341. Leading the chuckers were Craig
Schnaare with a (3-3) record, Pete Bruneo with a (2-4) record and Bruce
Bennett with a (l-0) record. Bradford came on str0ng at the end of the season by winning 4 of their last 6 games. Judging from all the underclassmen
participating in varsity baseball this season, next season should produce a
better record.

This year's tennis team finished second in
conference games with the best record that

5 wins - 3 losses. Bradford's tennis team
competed in conference play on Saturday,
May 20, at the Racine Horlick courts. The
top 9 men (6 varsity and 3 Junior varsity)
competed in sub-sectional games in which
Bradford sent it's top 3 men. Because tennis

report how T. Seitz, S. Leff, and S. Carey
finished in conference standing. All in all, a
fine tennis season.

Bradford' s first indoor track meet was a triangular meet against
Case and Tremper - Bradford took third . As in past seasons, Bradford did not do well in the indoor season. The outdoor season, a different story. When the outdoor season began, Bradford took 12th
out of 14 teams at the Janesville Relays. The next meet, the Brookfield Invitational, Bradford took 5th out of 6th. During this meet, D.
Kulich ran the fastest half-mile in the state with a time of 1:57.7,
only to break it at the Monona Grove Invitational on May 12 with a
1:57.2. The team was lead throughout the season by seniors Les
Braze, Dave Kulich, and Paul Cutts (who broke the school record
with a pole vault of 13'6'). Tom Phillip, junior, was the best dash
runner of the year. Copy deadlines for these pages prevented us from
including the season's finish, a finish which had D. Kulich, T. Phillip, and L. Braze heading for sectionals and for state. (As we close

1:56.7 in regionals. )

Bradford's swimming team finished the season with a 2 win - 4 loss record. Jim Heide was selected by the coaches as
the most improved swimmer, and Paul Cutts was voted by his fellow swimmers as the most valuable swimmer. Captains
for the team were Derrick Hilleshiem , Buzz Enroth, and Paul Cutts . Bob Bucko was the team ' s manager. This year' s record (the best in five years) does not indicate the great improvement made by this team. Bradford may be lacking in modern
swimming facilities , but the spirit of the swimmers was, indeed, praiseworthy . And they had fun, too . During one of the
many season workouts, the boys put four starting blocks, three chairs, and one table into the water without the coach
seeing them do it! The swimmers themselves felt that the season was a unique and rewarding experience. Records do not a
season make .

This years Junior Varsity team has had a great season.
Their record of 13 wins and 4 losses speaks for itself. The team
was coached by Mr. Tom Roders, which is his first year coaching at Bradford. Hats off to the J. V. players, for producing a
good record, due to good team work and a desire to win.

The sophomore basketball team finished
the season with a 12-5 record, ending conference play with a 7-1 . The team was coached
by Mr. Ron Soulek who won his first South
Shore Conference title in three years. The
team was led by the roubounding of Barry
"Sticks" Bennett, Steve Hein, and the scoring ability and floor leadership of Dan Harmon. Rounding out the first team was Marc
Travanty and Rengle Crain. The sophomores' only loss was to Racine Park the first
time around; however, in the second contest,
behind the 35 points of Dan Harmon
one

1971-72 Varsity Basketball
The Red Devils' basketball team ended their season with a 68-52 loss to Burlington in the regional championship game
at Burlington. Perhaps the highlights of the season was our 67-48 victory over Tremper, a win which allowed us to play
Burlington. The loss in the tournament ended the Devils' season with a I0-11 season record, and saw six seniors members
of the squad play their last varsity game: Simon Walker, Les Braze, Bruce Bennet, Dave Kulich, Bill Edwards, and Micky
Simon. SPY feels that our team and Coach Verway deserve a big cheer for giving us the chance to see some good
basketball.

Bradford's 1971 Homecoming Week (Oct. 4-9) consisted
of the following: Monday, Oct. 4th; Security Day: Tuesday,
Hot Pants' and Hat Day; Wednesday, Farmers Day; Thursday, Nationality Day, and Friday, Jersey and School Colors Day. On Thursday evening the cheerleaders supervised
the annual bonfire held at Alford Park. On Friday the
school participated in both the parade and the football
game against Racine Case; a game which we lost by 23
points, 42-19. At halftime, Hi-Y and Hi-Styles' parade entry (Burn the Birds) received first-place honors. In addition,
the student body heard Linda Wohlgemuth announced as
Queen and Jeff Grimes as King. On Saturday the traditional Homecoming dance was preceeded by an unconventional
dinner catered into our gym. The menu consisted of mostaciolli, beef, ham, and a selection of salad, cookies, and soft
drinks. Dick Bionde, disc-jockey on WCFL in Chicago,
emceed the dance and crowned Linda and Jeff. Providing
the music for the dance was the 'Lines End.' The junior
class, not the Student Council, as in past year, did the planning for this week of 'wing nut', fun and participation .

Bradford's football season ended with a 2-6, a disappointing result for both
players and coaches. A total of 30 players lettered for their efforts, 19 seniors
and 11 juniors. Team captains for the year were Chuck Feest, Dave Brown,
and Ron Gomez; voted most valuable lineman was Brad Sinnen; voted
most valuable back was Chuck Feest, while the most improved
players of the season were Mark Montague and Andy Peterson, Steve Hought on was the high individual scorer for the season with 38 points. Perhaps the
highest individual honor was given to Tim Gengembre who made the All Conference and the County Team; Brad Sinnen made All Conference honorable
mention and the County Team. Other outstanding performers were Tom Rizzo, the team 's leading rusher (5.6 yd average); Rick Dezek, the Devil's leading
passer (44 completions), and Chuck Feest, the leading pass receiver (13 receptions). The season's scoreboard is as follows :

A backwoods mountaineer one day found a mirror which a tourist
had lost. "Well if it ain't my old dad," he said as he looked in the
mirror."[ never knowed he had his pitcher took ."
He took the mirror home and stole into the attic to hide it. But his actions didn't escape his suspicious wife. That night while he
slept she slipped up to the attic and found the mirror. "Humm-mm," she said, looking into it, "so that's the old hag he's been
