BADGER BOY STATE

Bob, Bil l, and Armando spent the week from June 12
to the 19 on Ripon Campus. Armando was elected
sheriff of his dorm and Bob was elected mayor of his
floor.
general assembly.
General assembly lasted from eight P.M . to ten P.M .
Interesting speakers from all over the state spoke at
these assemblies.
Badger Boys State was set up like a regular state.
Each dormitory was a county and each floor in a dorm
was a city. Food was served at 7 A.M., l P.M. and
Armando feels that Badger Boy State " helped him
to better understand the democracy and freedom in
our nation ."
5:30 P.M . The boys went to school for two hours a day.

BADGER GIRL STATE
Bradford's representative to Badger
Girl State this year was Karen Kolbasnik. Karen went to Madison during the month of June and stayed at
Chadbourne Hall. Chadbourne was
the headquarters for the Badger
Girl State. Each floor in Chadbourne
was a city and two of these cities
made a county. Karen was elected
Police chief of her city. The girls attended a special session of the legislature, took a tour of the capitol,
and heard a speech directed to
them by Governor Knowles.

The trip to
Lima, Peru seemed
like a
wonderful
dream last spring. Then, suddenly, there I was stepping
off the plane to meet my Peruvian family. Perhaps
there has never been a more frightened and nervous
American Field Service student than I was at that particular moment. Struggling through customs, I walked
into the lobby at the airport and heard someone calling, "Barby, Barby!" I rushed to my new sister, Queta;
and from that moment on, I was part of the Pablo Varela LaRosa family. Their home is located in the beautiful suburb of San Isidro, surrounded by flowers, trees,
and parks. Senor LaRosa is a dominent father, firm but
kind. He gives the final approval to any plans which
the rest of the family might initiate. Senora LaRosa is a
charming woman dedicated to her home, husband, and
children . Sisters Gladys (16) and Queta (20) were patient in teaching me Spanis~ Peruvian dances and
songs; also, escorted me many places. Pacho (14), my
brother, was shy at first but soon accepted his sister
from Kenosha. Attending classes at a Catholic high
school under British rule proved to be an exciting experience for me.
All classes were taught in Spanish, Teachers changed
classes instead of students, the Peruvian anthem was
sung every morning, and never before had I worn a
uniform to school. Activities included an American
Field Service trip into the Andes mountains, a visit to
an ancient pre-lncan fortress, a day in Paramomga,
and a bull fight. But most exciting of all was to receive
an invitation to the Government Palace where we met
the President of Peru, Belaunde Terry. This opportunity
to live and attend school in another country has helped
me to become more understanding of other people's
ideas and, also, more appreciative of all that our
country has to offer its young people.

Trygve Simensen
Trygve came to Bradford from the Southern part of Norway. He lived there on a farm with his family. He arrived in
the United States on August 12, after a 10 day trip across the
Atlantic by boat. He then traveled by bus from New York to
Chicago, where he was met by his American family, the Leets.
Trygve felt "landing in New York and meeting his American
family" were the best parts of his trip. Trygve attended Telemark Landsgzmnas, a co-educational public school. Some differences between Telemark and Bradford are; teachers
change rooms instead of students, there are 10 minutes between classes, and each student takes approximately l 0 subjects. Another difference is that each student majors in one subject and takes courses relayed to that subject. Trygve is
majoring in English and woL1ld like to become a teacher after
graduation . Welcome to our friend from Norway, Trygve.

This year's Sophomore team compiled an excellent record of 5-1, losing only to Beloit. Bradford's Pink Devils beat Tremper both times they met. In the next few year's Bradford will be hearing a lot about Alvin Scott, Jim Hoff, Bill Lui, Mike Boettcher, Bob Reich,
Al Hapanovich, Greg Erskine, Chip Prybelski, Blake Seitz and Hank Czarnecki.

TROUNCES THE
TROJANS
"BRADFORD TOPS STREMPER WITH EASE," were
the headlines on the sports page of the Kenosha
News on November 4, and we did just that. Our
team not only topped theirs but our spirit did too.
Our first touchdown was made by Dick Falcon, who
picked up a Tremper fumb le and ran 38 yards. Dave·
Logan scored the second touchdown and we were on
our way. In the third quarter Lee Wagner spun into
the end zone . Ron Grimes scored the last touchdown.
Our three extra points were kicked by Frank Cielsiel ski. Trempers lone touchdown came in the last five
seconds of play when Don Vena crossed the goal line.

Much credit goes to our quarterback, Dick Laba.
Other standouts were Jim Schweitzer, John Zimmerman, Aubrey Anderson, Wally Czyka, Carl Jackson,

High School has been back on regular school days,
has once again proven to me, as it has many times
a very fine reputation in the field of sports. The school
service clubs have credited a great deal to the community and again, the school. There are various other
individual standouts, throughout, that have won in-

with its faculty and will always remain the best High

MORE SQUARES NEEDED
Here is a satire in which the author imagines what some leaders of yesteryear would have said
had they been " Smart Guys" instead of "squares":
Nathan Hale: Me spy on those British? Are you trying to be funny? Do you know what they do
with spies they catch? I' ll give you a news flash, chum. They hang them .
Paul Revere : What do you mean, me ride through every Middlesex village and town? And in
the middle of the night, yet? Why pick on me? Am I the only man in Boston with a horse?
Patrick Henry: Sure, I' m for liberty. First, last, and always . But we ' ve got to be o little real·
istic. We' re a pretty small outfit. If we start pushing the British around someone is going to get
hurt.
George Washington: Gentlemen , I am honored. But I do wish you would try someone else.
Let ' s say, General Gates. I'm just getting things organized at Mount Vernon.
Instead, the 20-year-old Nathan Hale was executed , regretting that he had but one life to
lose for his country. Had he switched sides, no doubt he could have saved himself.
Paul Revere made the historic ride and spread the alarm that the British were coming through
every Middlesex village and farm.
Patrick Henry stood up to be counted saying, " I know not what course others may ta ke, but
as for me , give me liberty or give me death."
George Washington accepted leadership of the rag-tag Continental Army , let it to victory and
became known as the father of his country.
As the author notes, more " squares " in the image of these men are needed today . We have
had a bumper copy of clever cynics for too long.

SENIOR
BANQUET
This year's Senior Banquet was the best one
Bradford has ever seen.
Approximately 200 people
attended the banquet at
Holy Rosary Hall. After
eating a delicious turkey
dinner, we were entertained by members of our
own class. The climax came
with the awarding of the
scholarships.
A
special
award was given to Russ
Moran, by Hi-Y, for being
the outstanding Senior boy.
All in all it was a memorable occasion.
