MARY D. BRADF
KENOSHA, WISC~R~I~IGH SCHOOL
FOREWORD
No city in Wisconsin has the right to be prouder of its high school history than
Kenosha. On July of 1849, the first free high school west of the Alleghenies was
established here. It was known as Kenosa Central High School.
The original School was used until 1891. At that time a new building was
constructed, which we know today as the Annex.
The first class to graduate in 1861 consisted of nine students. Over one hundred years later a class of 650 graduated.
Our present building cost one and one-half million dollars to build. It was
planned for a student body of fifteen hundred. Until the recent building of the
George Tremper High School, Bradford housed about two and one-half times
this number.
In 1940, the name of the school was changed to Mary D. Bradford in honor of
Mrs. Bradford's years of service to Kenosha schools.
In 1962, Bradford went on double shifts. For two years we were a school divided.
This year we will again become a united school.

"I teach because in passing on the living fiame
That never dying burns the ages through,
I have done service that is worth the name
Can I but say, 'The lamp of knowledge grew
A little brighter in the hands I taught.' "

SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS
Left to right: Donna Greathouse, Rick Bjorn, Cheryl Becker, Noreen Wade.
We as sophomores have reached somewhat of a
plateau in our education. For many of those that
graduate in 1967 and do not plan to go on to college, these final three years will be the end of their
formal education. For those who do plan to go on
to college these final three years will serve as a
period of preparation for the years ahead in college. Our world is an ever-changing world and
continues to change. Whether you go on to college
or not, you must make the most of these remaining years in high school. I know that I am going
to. How about yo·..1?
Respectfully submitted,
Rick Bjorn

the junior prom. This decorative event will
long be remembered for the fun and excitement it offered us. However, this exciting
event would not have been possible without
the generous help of our class advisers Mr.
Fitzpatrick, Mr. Bakke, Mr. Brown, Mr.
Cibrario, Mrs. Dahl, Mr. F. Smith, Mr.
Walke, Miss Yates, and Mrs. Zadkovich.
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank my fellow class officers: Vice President, Jim Homan; Secretary, Sandy Goodwin; Treasurer, Pat Green, and also my
fellow students for their co-operation and
assistance throughout the school year.
As juniors of Mary D. Bradford High
School, we have done a great deal to contribute to the success of the student body.
Members of our class have highly contributed to the scholarly standing of Bradford
High. The various service clubs in school
have had many of our junior boys and
girls helping them throughout the school
year. Many of our boys have formed the
strength of our athletic teams. Other members of our class have won honors in debating and in the science fair.
Although many splendid dances have been
held, our social highlight of this year was

HOMECOMING
Our Queen with her red roses
Minus parades, floats, and usual homecoming activity, the
student body of Mary D . Bradford made the best of things
this year. While cheers from the pep assembly echoed through
the halls, "Beat Park" and "Go Red Devils" signs were being
tacked up everywhere.
Many flocked to the Lakefront Stadium to watch our team
play. The big moment of the game during halftime when
the queen and her court were announced.
The 1964 Homecoming was under the supervision of the
faculty extra-curricular council, because there wasn't enough
time to find a capable and interested faculty advisor for the
event. Mr. Davey and the Hi-Y Clubs of Bradford and Tremper organized and sponsored the dance where we had a
chance to meet the Homecoming royalty and talk to friends
from Tremper as well as Bradford.

HALF-TIME
ACTIVITIES
Among the highlights of our half-time activities was our own Red Devil (alias Ed
Springhoff ). He cheered with us at the
Bradford-Tremper game and danced to
the swinging tunes of our Bradford band.
We were also entertained by the Beatles
and Kenosha's own J ohnson and Goldwater.

Deb's annual winter formal was that. The gym was transformed
into a dreamland, where wishes could come true. We danced with
our "Christmas Dream" to the music of Lee Aiello. In the girl's

INTRODUCING ((DOC"
This was the year that "Doc" came to Kenosha.
"Doc" Severinson that is. The exciting, mellow tones
of "Doc's" trumpet filled the Mary Bradford auditorium, which was packed with only standing room
available. The Mary D. Bradford band, directed by
Mr. Hughes, accompanied "Doc" on , three numbers
and three encores, two of which were the same number, "After You've Gone." "Doc's" other encore
was "Portrait of a Lovely Lady" which "Doc" dedicated to his wife. During the intermission "Doc"
was presented with an assorted package of Wisconsin cheeses. "Doc" Severinson can presently be seen
on the Tonight Show as a soloist and assistant conductor to Skitch Henderson. Kenosha will long
remember this fine artist.

BRADFORD)S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Our Leader
Once again, a successful year was experienced by
The Annual Christmas Festival of Choral Music.
The program, consisting of the A Cappella Choir,
Senior Mixed Chorus, Senior Girls' Chorus, Sophomore Mixed Choir, and Sophomore Girls' Chorus,
provided excellent entertainment which was fully
enjoyed by all present. The audience proved to be
most receptive and the performances had the auditorium filled. In order to present such a fine show,
the groups involved put in a great deal of time
and effort so that they might provide a cheery and
delightful concert. The program was climaxed by
the traditional living Christmas Tree which cer··
tainly stirred the holiday spirit of every participant.

It's true the record this year wasn't the best but the
boys showed great enthusiasm and worked hard.
Coached by Bruce Hammond, the team was on the
edge of victory many a time. Two team members,
Jim Schweitzer, a junior, and Mike Dinges, a senior,
received honorable mention on the Big Eight All
Conference Team. Ron Zeith and Mike Dinges
were runners out for "Most Valuable Player" . Mike
and Ron also served as co-captain. With returning
junior talent and upcoming sophomore spirit, Bradford should be a winning team, again.

This year's sophomore team wound up with a
6-1 record. Coached by Mr. Cibrario and
Mr. Bakke, the team worked hard with excellent results. The '66 Varsity eagerly awaits
the talent of these boys. Bradford m'ay have
some good years ahead with such talent as Dick
Falcone, Mike Lane, Dick Laba, and Tyrone
Chapman. The team elected Dick Falcon and
Dick Laba as co-captains.

BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS
The 1965 basketball team, although · it had a bad start,
finished the season with a few wins under its belt. Coached
by Jerry Verwey, the boys could have used a break here
and there. In three games one break might have put Bradford in the victor's circle. The team lost to Park by a mere
two points and to Muskego by only two baskets, (70-66).
Muskego was ranked 13th in the state. Jim Schweitzer
scored 24 points in that game.
But Bradford did win the most important game of the season-the Tremper game, (50-47). With this victory came
the possession of the Brown Jug.
The boys have steadily improved this year. Of course, we
all hate to see such Seniors as Gorky Chatilovich, John
Raksany, K enny Smith, and Ron Zeith go. Looking at the

brighter side of things, Tom Roders, Russ Moran, Cari Jackson, Bob Wiersum, Jim

They deserve our support for their hard work

PICTURE: Mike Zizich, R on Suokko, Greg Weyrauch .
This year's sophomore \->asketball team is a real spiritfilled team. Coach Tyggum feels the team's strength
lies in defense, good shooters, hustling pride and
spirit, exceptional teamwork and its intelligence.
Over all lack of height and lack of experience seem
to be the teams biggest problems. Of the teams first
five losses Mr. Tyggum feels that ". . . Beloit and
Central could have been reversed, except for the
intangible factors constantly present in basketball."
Coach also feels that Dick Laba, Aubrey Anderson,
John Zimmerman, Ed Wojnicz, Mike Zizich, and
Mike Lane will be assets to next year's varsity and
junior varsity squads.
Concerning the first Tremper game, which the boys
won 63- 54, Coach Tyggum feels that the clutch
shooting by Laba and Zimmerman, the rebounding
by Zizich and Lyons (defensive) and the hustle spirit
of all the boys helped to win the game. Tyggum
feels that there were too many fouls (30-5 boys
fouled out ) and that there could have been improvement in offensive rebounding, rebound positioning and free throw shooting.
The outlook for next year is impressive, to say the
least.

SWIMMING TEAM
This year's swimming team, coached by Mr. Edwards and Mr. Wright, beat Tremper this year,
every time they met. Mr. Edwards said about the
team, "Because of the split, the swim team split also.
And therefore we started with a new team, as if
Bradford never had a swim team. And considering
this basis, I feel we did very well. Without exception
every boy improved himself personally." Boys who
show promise and are returning next year are Tom
Bergo, J eff Heide, Frank Boyer, and Dale J enkins,
who in Mr. Edward's words was "a very promising
sophomore." Mike Bleashka was captain.
CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
Were you ever driving through Simmons Park when
a boy in sweat pants and sweat shirt ran by? That
was our cross country team. Every afternoon the
boys could be seen sprinting through Simmons and
down Kennedy Drive. In Big Eight competition with
10 schools contending, Bradford finished eighth.
Coach Verwey said of the team, "The double session
certainly hurt us as the number of participants, but
we had a very young team with a lot of spirit and a
hopeful look to next year." Besides the two returning lettermen next year, Mr. Verwey said that John
Koloen, Tomm Roders and Larry Matalas show
much promise. This year's captain was Ed Springhoff.

The purpose of Key Club is to promote school spirit, provide service for the school and create student
leadership. This year the boys with the help of
Tremper's Key Club purchased a trophy which will
travel between the two schools. The winner of the
annual Bradford-Tremper football game will receive the trophy for that year. Key Club members
also entertained us during the half time of the
Bradford-Tremper basketball games by playing a
basketball game of their own against Tremper's
Key Club.
Every year Key Club helps another deserving senior
to go to college. This year money was raised from a

the gym. More important is the spirit of friendship Mr. Tyggum's boys generate throughout our
school.

thick and thin, finding and arranging the material which composes Bradford's Yearbook.
Throughout the year, they design layouts, sell
ads, or write copy and in spite of many delays,
everything seems to get done. It was a hardworking year for those on the Spy staff, a staff
that put out a good book.
Photographers this year were Frank Maxwell,
Jim Hervat, and John Laurent.

Varsity Cheerleaders: Sheryl Dean, Pat Iorio, Carlene Arnoldini, Sandy Goodwin, and Marlene Follak.
Pat and Sheryl
Some of the prettiest and most vivacious girls are our
cheerleaders this year, and they are doing a good job of
it too. To them it isn't work to boost school spirit, it's
fun and excitement as well as a challenge. Their pep and
vitality help to cheer the team on to victory and arouse
the spirit of the fans at every game.
The varsity cheerleading squad, led by their popular captain, Sheryl Dean, never lost their enthusiasm, even at
times when things appeared to be really bad.

Have you ever wondered who that person was who
asks, "Have you got a pass?" or told you, "No eating except in lunch rooms." is? It's an S.S.O. These
boys and girls gave their time, voluntarily, every
noon. Their job was to help keep the noon hour
running more smoothly. These kids really deserve
recognition for their terrific job!
G.A.A.
The Girl's Athletic Association offered a variety of
activities this year for its members. Among these were
archery, volley ball, apparatus, bowling, basketball,
and softball. This year Bradford's archery team held
a tournament with Tremper. The best team came
out on top, again-Bradford. At the end of the
year a banquet was held.

The members of Kenews worked diligently all year,
organizing the material for Bradford's newspaper, a
newspaper which excellently reports school activities and events to the students. Publishing a newspaper is far from easy.
Deadlines have to be met, pictures have to be taken,
and copies must be written, all of which require
much time and effort. None-the-less, Kenews came
out as scheduled, packed with amusing and always
interesting articles. This group sacrificed many hours
of their time in order to provide a paper that would
be thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Their year of
tiresome work resulted in exceptionally fine publications which were wholly appreciated by the student
body.

A CAPPELLA
This year's A Cappella was quite busy. In December, they went to Chicago and performed. The
choir stayed at Sherman House and saw some of
the sigh ts of Chicago. Some other even ts they sang
at were the Spring Concert, the State-Wide Music
Contest, All-City choral Festival, the Christmas
Concert, and they gave a Christmas assembly for
us. They also sang for the Kiwanis and Elks Clubs
and out at Tremper for Teachers Convention.
Congratulations to every individual member of
A Cappella. Bradford thanks you for the distinction you've brought to our school.

BAND
The band really blew up a storm this year. In their
smart red and white uniforms, the members could
be seen doing their maneuvers at the football
games. The band brought the Beatles, Lyndon
Johnson and his dogs, and Barry Goldwater to
Kenosha.
At the basketball games, the pep band could be
heard blasting our team on. Mr. Hughes introduced the new "Fight" song to the fans this year.
On January 12, the band presented concert. At
this concert the world famous trumpet player
"Doc" Severenson played. "Doc" received three
standing ovations and everyone agreed the band
sounded great!
Again this year our band did an outstanding job.

The big event this year was the trip to Chicago in December. The orchestra combined with Trempers and along with the A Cappella Choir performed at a music

The following quotation, a good description of the American
free enterprise system, was made by Abraham Lincoln in a
message to Congress in 1861 . . .
"Wh en one starts poor, as most do in the race of Ii fe, free
society is such that he knows he can better his condition . . .
The prudent penniless beginner in these states labors for
wages awhile, saves a surplus with which to buy tools or land
for himself and at length hires another new beginner to help
him . . . This is the just and generous and prosperous system
which opens the way to all, gives hope to all, and consequent
energy and progress and improvement of con di ti on to all."
