:
yourself to a book full of mem
Help yourself to a book full of memories ... memories
that remind you of loyalty and pride. You have them,
of course, but I guess you just never stop to look at them
or think about them . You're too busy living and enjoying
life to see the things that really count ... like the friendships you've made. You know how fast you dash down
the halls from class to class . . . you don't have time
to appreciate those ties ... You've known all the things
you'll find here as memories. I think they'll mean much
more now . . . you know what I mean . . . now that
you have the time to let them all sink in ... the chance
to see and live again a photographic memory of fond
experiences ... Take a look and see!

The remarkable versatility of K.H .S. students finds full expression in thi s appealing
album designed for your most nostalgic moments . . .
SPY
"Joani, where did you put that dummy?" . . .
"Barbara, did you leave that ledger home again"
. . . "Tom, where can we go on ads today?" . . .
"Bob, I need some money!" . . . such is the typical
conversation heard every day sixth hour from the
time school started in the Fall until it let out in
June. No one a k "What's there to do today?" . . .
there's always something to do: pictures to be
identified, copy to be written, ads to be gotten,
art work to be finished, everything to be proofread,
and hundreds of little things ... odds and end ...
to be completed before the mass of pictures, copy,
and art work become a reality in the form of SPY.
Yes ... it's also a lot of work and there are many
headaches, but when the book is completed the
SPY Staff is satisfied that they have given the
students of K.H.S. an album of memories which
will last forever.

MISS HARGRAVE LEAVES
MISS CATHERINE V. HARGRAVE
Choral Director
Miss Catherine Hargrave, music teacher in Kenosha's public schools for the pa. t 20 years, resigned from her position because of ill h ealth.
Choral music director at Mary D. Bradford High
School since 1940, Miss Margrave has, in that time,
bui lt the department from a handful of students
meeting a period Pach day into four large choral
groups. Her students over the past several years
have received recognition from all OV('r the tate
for their excellent presentations, but Miss Hargrave
has always been quick to give thPm more credit
than herse lf.
Only last fall the A Cappella Choir was invited
to sing at the state teachers' convention
a
singular honor among choirs from all state high
schools. Following their appearance, the music
teac her received a sco re or more of notes complimenting their performance.
At the time of her retirement she was director
of four groups which comprised nearly 300 students
A Cappella Choir, Sophomore and Senior Sym.
phonic Choruses and the Cecili a n Chorus.
Always search ing for some new way to make
her students' music more appealing, Miss Hargrave
in 1951 hit upon the idea of bri nging a living Christmas tree to t h e stag e of the high school auditorium
for t he annual Christmas co ncert. The choir grouped
to form t h e boug h s of a tree o effectively that
the system ha been repeated each year since.
Members of t h p SPY Staff and the studen t bodv
exp ress their appreciation for ::".fiss Hargrave's long
years of service and regret her early retirement.

When Autumn leaves began to fall,
Kenosha gridders began their maul.
Team after team in the mighty Big Eight
Fell at the feet of our gridiron great.
Surrounded by many predictions and whims,
They extended their record to sixteen straight wins.
Waukegan and West were the first to go down,
Then Janesville and East were sunk in the ground.
Park and Horlick and Beloit did fall,
But poor old Central got it worst of all.
They fought as a team, all of them great,
Like "Bono" and Gotta who were selected All State.
Our Cross Country boys were a little too late,
But even so, finished eight in the state.
When the cold wind blew, at the end of the fall,
Everyone's thoughts turned to basketball.
The scorers pens often ran dry,
As mighty Jeff Cohen set a new scoring high.
Two Red Devil grapplers named Tommy and Larry
Brought to Kenosha the Big Eight mat trophy.
But their attempt to retain the State Wrestling Crown
Was lost to Valders in Madison town.
Our Red Devil swimmers had another fine season
And our coach, Mr Martin, rejoiced with good reason.
With a boy like Mike Baker, who's impossible to beat,
We took second place in the Annual State ).'[eet.
As the temperature rised to u her spring in,
Our athletes look around for more trophys to bring in.
If you're still around, I hope you will try,
To see me again in the '58 SPY.

King Tom Oakland and Queen Sue Ensfield Reign Over 1957 Prom
Although the weather wasn't perfect May 3, spirits of the Prom goers weren't
in the least downcast. The boys looked smooth and polished in t h<>ir varied colc>rNI
tux's and the girls, as always, added much color tu the festivities with their lovely
f.1rmals. Everyone ''Oh'd and Ah'd" over the beautiful dr>corntions which made the
theme seem so rPalistic. At midnight all the couples went over to the Kenosha
Th1•atre to view "The Spirit of St. Louis." This was the beginning of the Aftt'r-Glow
s;:o:1sored by Kiwanis every year for the annua l Prom. When the movie ended, back
aga111 to the Eagle's where food and entertainment awaitc·d everyone. When at last
four a.m. arrived Prom goers were all fairly tired and ready to return home after a

THE BEL-AIR HARD TOP BY CHEVROLET
Long a favorite among Chevrolet families the world over, the Bel-Air
Hard Top is destined this year to etch itself deeper in the affections of
its owners. For, indeed, it now offers more of everything to make them proud
and happy and contented. The car is now far more beautiful in styling . . .
with its new slip-stream rear-fender design ... its brilliant new grille assembly . . . and its wonderful new color combinations. The car is also more rewarding to ride in-with its luxurious, yet durable, new interiors. And it is
far more thrilling to drive-with its many great new engineering advancements. In every way, it brings a new measure of dependability and satisfaction to family motoring.

THE CANDLE AND THE FLAME
When Great-Great-Grandma was "teenage" a candle was a common
household necessity. It was an expendable item used in large quantity and
made with little regard for outward beauty. Its only function was to provide
a steady, long enduring flame by whose light the activities of the daylight
hours could be extended.
By the soft mellow glow of the candle flame. much was accomplished.
In the home. useful crafts such as spinning. weaving. needlework. cobbling,
wood carving. etc .. filled the evening hours while in the office and store
the clerks continued their bookkeeping. their weighing. and their wrapping
by candlelight.
Outdoors the candle flame, protected from the wind by horn or glass
enclosure. helped the wayfarer pick his path through the darkness of the
night and lit the farmer's way to his early morning chores.
The candle of today serves a dual purpose. its beauty and variety of
color and design adapt it to decorative purposes. functionally. it retains its
potential capacity for providing useful flame and light.
What happens when we seek to use this light? First. we must apply
fire to the wick and sometimes the flame is slow to start. Until the candle
begins to give of itself. no light can be obtained from it and throughout its
entire existence, the candle must continue to give of itself or its flame will
be extinguished and its light cease.
Your life can be likened to the candle. If you want the flame of accomplishment to light up your life, you must first apply the spark of ambition
and then never stop giving the very best that is in you to everything that
you do.
