SNIPPETS of SALEM
367 - 1949 Belgian Review
a Magazine
Contents:
Horses images, text, advertisements and professional advice regarding the breed
Belgians.
0-56 pages
NOTES:
-Pages within the pamphlets may be out of sequence because of the scanning
process.
-Numbering on these pages may include the date and sequence within each
pamphlet.
The original materials used in this project were from the FWB Fred Wesley
Brown Collection. Some docu ments were photocopied before they were scanned
into the PDF document and those will be available in print format. The originals
may exist either in the FWB collection or at the Western Kenosha County
Historical Society- depending on family decisions at a later date. These
materials were contributed because th e family wished that the history that they
and their families have experienced can be saved for the future generations.
Some "published" documents were dismantled in order to provide a 1:1 scan of
the original item rather than a scan of a photocopy. The decision to do this was
made because the INFORMAT ION was more important than the media that was
used to present the information. Naturally, singular ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS
were not destroyed.
Researchers should also refer to the Valentine Digital archives which may at the
SALEM COMMUNITY LIBRARY for more images in this collection or digital
images of items that may relate to this booklet or related to the topic.

To dem onstrate tha t good draft horses are adapted
to many tasks on large irrigated farms of the W est , Mr.
L. F . Cheatham, proprietor of Cheatham Dairy Farm,
Laveen, Arizona, has sent us these pictures of Belgians
at work on that farm. The picture above shows the
stallion, Emblem's Regent 28142, and the mare, Resque's Gem 29481. hauling baled alfalfa hay. During last
season they hauled over 1,000 tons, most of it for a d istance of 2lh miles.
In the picture below the teams are shown hauling
silage from a pit silo. The center pair are re gistered
Belgian mares, which were purchased from C. G . Good
& Son, Ogden, Iowa, along with the pair in the u pper
picture and 2 other registered mares.
Mr. Cheatham has wor ked a pair of paint mares on
a field baler for 8 years and they have now baled between 10 and 12 thousand tons of hay. He says he is
sure the Belgians will do as well or even better, the
way they h andle, because they always do a good job
regardless of good or poor teamsters.
The Cheatham Dairy milks 400 cows, all 3 times a
day, and produces about 15,.000 pounds of milk a day.
Mr. Cheatham w r ites further as follows, "There are a
good many new machines which are adaptable to be
used w ith good sensible h orses, such as field b alers of
the slicer and string-tie types, six-foot combines and the
like. Pulling these with horses enables you to do a
better job by g iving you more time to watch your
machines. We have used horses on these jobs, as well
as many more. We use about 8 teams every day and
about 12 pairs through harvest t ime."
My 2-year-old stallion, John, was champion
Wisconsin-bred and owned stallion of the Wisconsin Centennial Exposition of 1948.
I am now offering for sale at private treaty:
Fillies and Brood Mares of various ages and
some s tallion colts.

We believe every farm needs a good team of
draft horses for those jobs which can be done
best with horse power. For many years we
have raised well-bred, good quality Belgians.
We are n ow using good teams of Belgians
on all of our five farms. We also have several
choice young mares and a fine sorrel y ear ling

We believe in Belgians. W·e always have a fe w Belgians, both registered and grade . We raise

DRAFT HORSE
EXHIBITS ARE
MOST POPLUAR
The picture at right shows the
well-filled coliseum seats overlooking the draft horse exhibit at
the Indiana State Fair at midmorning on Wednesday, September 8, 1948. This is a striking
contrast with the picture below
taken within 5 minutes of the
other.
The picture at the left shows
the seats on the opposite s ide of
the judging arena in the Indiana
State Fair Coliseum on the same
morning. These pic.tures demonstrate that fair-goers, from both
city and country, like the action,
animation, flash and power displayed by the draft horses on
t he tanbark. Both photos are by
Aker and were supplied by courtesy of Charles J. Lynn of Indianapolis.

THE
BELGIA N
REVIEW
Editorially Speaking Although this publication is designated as the 1949
Belgian Review, to indicate the year in which it is printed, it is in fact, from the standpoint of news material,
a review of the activities and accomplishmen ts of our
Belgian breeders during 1948. The p ages of official
awards which follow a re complete insofar as the secr etary was able to secure them from the f airs.
The increased popularity of show h itch es made up
of Belgian geldings or mares has been a n oteworthy
development of recent years. These ar e p opular not
only at the state fairs and big regional shows but also
at county fa irs in some states. Illinois has an u n usually
large number of county fairs where liberal pr emium
money is provided for pairs, fours and six-h orse teams,
bringing out splendid exhibits.
Iowa also has many county fairs and dist rict horse
shows where team classes are provided.
Th e Iowa
breeders have also developed a grea t deal of enthusiasm
and r ivalry in the showing of draft horses in s ingle cart
hitches. In this class the Belgians are well r epr esented.
Some county fairs in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania also stress the team shows.
The Pacific Coast states have always gone in for
big show hitches on a large scale and this in t erest is
being maintained despite a drop in the showin g of d r aft
horses at halter. Belgians are well represented in the
show teams of those states. Bel gian geldings a re also
used to drag the race tracks and pull the st arting gates
at many of the racing establishments.
As the readers scan the pages of offic ial a wards.
many will be surprised by the small num ber exhibited
at the International. Visitors walking thr ou gh the horse
barns a t the International were heard to r emark.
"Where are all the Belgians?"
It is only fair to our
breeders that the public be informed of the r eason for
the drop from 82 purebred Belgians exhibited at the
1947 International to 26 head at the 1948 show. This
decrease w as almost in exact proportion to the cut in
p remium m oney .
The b oa r d of directors of Belgian Draft Horse Corporation, faced with an increasing deficit due to the drop
in regist ries and transfers, considered it necessary to
discontinue their half of the pr emium money at Chicago.
The Interna tional then decreased its share of premiums
to $760. W ith the high cost of showing at Chicago,. it
was only natur al that the low premiums attracted fewer
exhibitors and those breeders who did show were inclined t o bring only a few head of their very best
hor ses.
As p roof t h at the interest in showing Belgians has
been w ell-maintained at many fairs, we point to the
American Belgian Show at the Ohio State Fair. There
a total p remium list of $6,250 brought out 192 Belgians
repr esenting the ownership of 42 breeders.
Turning then to the National Belgian Show at
Waterloo, Iowa, the reader will find that 21 breeders
from 8 state s exhibited 140 head, competing for total
p remi um s of $4,070.
Observation at many fairs has proved that the draft
horse e xhibit s are the biggest attraction in the judging
arena for the average spectators, - the folks who pay
the ga te admissions. Since the draft horse registry associations are faced with the common problem of decreasin g revenue , it is only reasonable that the management of t he fa irs and shows should provide sufficient
p remiu m m oney to maintain this popular feature and
compen sate the breeders, at least in part, for the expense of fittin g and showing the draft horses.

It won second in the driving competition with all breeds
competing.
At the same show the wheel pair, Firestone and Marcus, won their class in the Belgian division, won champion 2-horse team in Belgian and Percheron division and won r eserve grand champion 2

Bennett's Belgians
A few good Belgian horses on hand at all times.
Horses are a very scarce thing on most farms,
but I still find use for a good team of Belgians
.th'e year around.
In fact this past spring. we did all the sowing
and planting and a good share of the plowing
and fitting with horses.
Will have for light public service this
spring, a Yery flashy, outstanding 2year-old stallion of my own breeding,
a full brother to the 3-year-old stallion, Joe Bolser 28388, that was tops
in Penna. this past year. He is owned
by Chas. Orndorff, Waynesburg, Pa.,
who purchased this colt of me.

THE
BELGIAN
TROPHIES FROM BELGIUM
Additional rewards for the owners of the top horses
at four of the leading shows in 1948 were again provided in the form of the cups from Belgium. These beautiful silver trophies were the gift of the Societe R oyale
Le Cheval de Trait Belge at Brussels, the association
of breeders in the native land of the Belgian horse.
Chevalier Hynderick de Theulegoet is the secretary of
the Society Royale.
Two of the cups are designated for the same shows
each year. These are the Hynderick Cup, awarded at the
National Belgian Show at Waterloo, Iowa,. and the King
Albert Cup, awarded at the International Live Stock
Exposition at Chicago. After a horse has won either
the King Albert or Hynderick Cup, it is not eligible
to compete again for either of those t roph ies. These
cups were first presented in 1925 and have been sent
to us each year except for the six years during World
War II when Belgium was occupied by the Nazi armies.
The Yser Cup was awarded in 1948 at the Minnesota State Fair and the Belgian Breeders' Cup at the
American Belgian Show. Pictures of the horses which
won these trophies and names of the owners appear on
other pages of this Review. Eacli cup becomes the per manent property of the winner.
The Belgian breeders of the United States take this
occasion to thank the directors and the Secretary of
the Societe Royale for these fine trophies.

scene on a horse breeding farm in Belgium. In the background of the courtyard, which is surr ounded by dwellings and stables, are seen several mares and a foal.
The original painting hangs in the home office of
the Belgian Draft Horse Corporation at Wabash, Indiana. It was copyrighted in 1916 and serves as t he official
insignia of this corporation. Our Belgian horsemen have
become familiar with it from its appearance on the
certificates of registry and transfer and on the official
letterheads of the corporation.
NEW EDITION OF FEEDS & FEED ING
The twenty -first edition of Feeds and Feeding, by
Prof. Frank B. Morrison of Cornell University , completed in the fall of 1948, marks the 50th anniversary of
the first edition of that widely used reference book
for stockmen. The first edition was written by Dean
W . A. Henry of the University of W isconsin.
Completely revised to give the most up-to-date information regarding livestock feeding and nutrition,
this book is of particular interest to horse breeders
because it devotes two full chapters to horses, thus
recognizing that horses continue to have an important
place in our farming program. These cover the following subjects: factors influencing work done by horses;
nutrients required by horses, preparation of feed, feeding work horses, feeding brood mares, fo als and stallions, cost of feeding horses.

The abov e picture of Farceur 7332 shows this world-famous sire a t the height of his
show-ring career which was climaxed by winning the grand championship a t the
1913 International. A survey of the show-ring records down to the present time will
show that h is descendants continue to win top honors.
His sons won t wo grand championships and his daughters won 5 grand championships at the International. His sons won 6 grand champion ships a nd his daughters won 4 grand championships at the National Belgian Show. The grand champion
stallions at 6 of the last 7 Internationals are direct descendants of old Farceur.
O ur present senior herd sire is Farceur's Resque 17664, a double grandson of
Farceur. His s ire was Oakdale Farceur 12581. His dam was Farceur's Civette 9659.
Both were grand champions at the Internation al. Most of our Belgians carry the
bloodlines of Farceur.
Our top winnings at the 1948 Iowa State Fair include the followin g: Senior and
grand champion stallion on Major Resque ; Reserve junior champion stallion on
Resque's Conquest; Reserve junior champion mare on Gwendelyn Resque ; first
prize 3-year-old mare on Ivondale Beauty II; first in get-of-sire; three mares, stal lion and 3 mares. We also had Reserve Champion stallion of the 1948 National Stallion show on Resque's Conquest.
Oakdale Farm h as also developed a nice herd of purebred Guernsey cattle.
