NOTES:
-Pages within the pamphlets may be out of sequence because of the scanning
process.
-Numbering on these pages may include the date and sequence within each
pamphlet.
The original materials used in this project were from the FWB Fred Wesley
Brown Collection. Some documents were photocopied before they were scanned
into the PDF document and those will be available in print format. The originals
may exist either in the FWB collection or at the Western Kenosha County
Historical Society- depending on family decisions at a later date. These
materials were contributed because the family wished that the history that they
and their families have experienced can be saved for the future generations.
Some "published" documents were dismantled in order to provide a 1:1 scan of
the original item rather than a scan of a photocopy. The decision to do this was
made because the INFORMATION was more important than the media that was
used to present the information. Naturally, singular ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS
were not destroyed.
Researchers should also refer to the Valentine Digital archives which may at the
SALEM COMMUNITY LIBRARY for more images in th is collection or digital
images of items that may relate to this booklet or related to the topic.

Our New Director
At the annual meeting of Belgia n
Draft Horse Corporation of America on
December 2, 1941, Harvey Hoewisch er
of Sidney. Ohio, was elected t o the
office of director for two years t o c omplete the unex pired ter m of the la te
E. H. CampbelL
Harve;y Hoewischer g r ew u p with
the Belgian horse business, as d id h i s
brothers, Harry and Walter, o n the
farm of their father, ·wmia m Hoewischer . William Hoew is ch er bought
his first Belgian stallion, Laboure ur de
Laet 3689 in 1909, making t his p urchas e
from Bell Brothers wh o had imported
this stallion. The Hoewisc h er family
made three importations from Belgium,
in 1910, 1911 and 1913. They m ade their
first exhibit at the Oh io St ate Fair in
1911. In their second importation, t hey
brought over a stallion Boston 5674,
whose progeny and descendant s w e re
HARVEY HOEWISCHER prominent winners in the Eastern B e lgian Futurity of the Ohio State F air.
He sired Boston's Lad 10477, stallion winner in that futurity in
1917, first of the four stallions which topped that futur ity f or the
firm of William Hoewischer & Sons. The other three, wmning in
1920, 1921 and 1922 were all sired by Floridor du Geron 8393, a
stallion which Hoewischers brought over in their last impor tation .
Harvey Hoewischer moved to the home farm in 1919, purchasing a half interest in livestock and equipment from his father
In 1920, following his father's death, Har vey p u rchased t he remaining share of the livestock and equipment and the h ome
farm of 156 acres. This farm has now been expanded to 314 acres
with the purchase o f the adjoining tract on which Ha rvey's son,
William, now resides. "Bill" is a graduate of Ohio State Unive rsity a nd was the high man in judging draft horses in the con t est
at the 1939 International. in which 145 students competed , and
in which Ohio State's team won first place. Harvey and Bill are
co-partners in farming. On their Shelby County land they n o w
have 15 purebred Belgians, 56 head of purebred Shorth orn c attle,
20 brood sows and 25 Shropshire breeding ewes . The y use the ir
Belgian mares as their chief source of field power and r a ise as
many colts as possible.
The Hoewischer family has exhibited Belgians at t he Ohio
Sta te Fair every year but three since 1911. They h ave a lso shown
at a number of other leading fairs during those years. Har vey
Hoewischer showed at the National and American Roy al l ast fall
for the first time and his B elgians met with unusual success. He
brings to the directorate of this corporation not onl y a wid e
knowledge of the Belgian horse breeding busin ess but a lso a
wide acquaintance among horsemen throughout the middle west
whose confidence in him found expression in his election t o this
office.
Judge of Belgians at the 1941
International
The difficult assignment of making official p lacings on the 83
head of pur ebr ed Belgians which were led into the arena at the
1941 Internatio na l was given Charles A. Wentz of Upper S andusky,
Ohio. Although this was his first work a s judge of Belgians at the
International, Charlie Wentz has become well-known through his
work as j udge of both Belgians and Per cherons at the leading state
fairs and r egional expositions. Some of his assignments have been
at the American Royal, The Pennsylvania Farm Show, I ndiana,
Mi chigan, N ew York and Minnesota State F airs. He served as
referee of the com mittee of judges at the National Percheron show
at Columbus, Ohio, in 1937.
Mr. Wentz is even better known as a breeder and exhibitor of
purebred Belgians. He made his first purchase of purebred Belgians in t he sp r in g of 1909 when he purchased a stallion to
stand at public service. Desiring to own a real high-class stall ion, he purch a sed Frank Bolser 6750 and a pair of bay imported Belgian mares from Loeser BrotherR of Ligonier, I n diana, in December, 1912. This stallion and one of these mares produced the s t allion colt, Ideal 9653, which won the stallion division
of the first Eastern Belgian Futurity at the Ohio State Fair. Mr.
Wentz has been showing yearling Belgians in eve ry one of the
26 shows of tha t futurity. He bred six of the winners of that
futurity, the others being (Grace 10039, filly-1923), (Bobby Bolser 14081, stallion- 1925), (Wyandot Franklin 20250, stallion1936) , (Wyan dot's E leanor 23057, filly- 1939) and (Franklin B.
13298, stallion-1923) . He exhibited the winner of the Cudahy
Trophy for m ar e in 1938. This was Stella 21450. This mare also
won the K in g Albert Cup the same year.
Mr. W entz has t he achievement of showing three grand champion Belgian stallions at the International. These were Lourdeau
II 13481, gr and ch ampion in 1928 and reserve grand champion in
1927; Balzac d e B o gaerden 16119, grand champion in 1930 and reserve grand champion in 1931; Ivondale Farceur 18164, grand
champion in 1936. The last named horse is now the chief herd si re
on the Wen tz f arm where Mr. Wentz is now in partnership with his
son, Allen. H is son, Howard, who was associated with his father
for a number of years, is now in charge of the Percheron horses
at the fam ous Woodside Farm at Columbus, Ohio. Another son,
Ralph, is in charge of the purebred Belgians at Chuck-Walt
Farms, B u cyr us, Ohio.
Mr. Wentz ha s been a director of Belgian Draft Horse Corporati on for all b ut t hree years of the period beginning De cember
4, 1928. He served as president of this organization during the
years 1929 to 1932, inclusive. He is now vice-president, having
s erved m that o ffice conti nuously since November 30, 1937.

A FINE
HOR~SE
AN D A GREAT SIRE
LEON was first as a yearling at Indianapolis; Grand Champ10n as a three-year-old at the Lafayette
Stallion Show (in competition with some of Indiana's best stallions), and Reserve Gr and Champion
at the Wisconsin State Fair in 194 1. H e has lots of quality and in add1tion to being a fine show horse he
has already pr oven his ability as a sire by some of the fine colts which we have h ere at our farm.
BETTER BELGIANS WITH LOTS OF QUALITY
We aim to breed the best Belgians possible and have a fine selection of 18 good first-class broodmares,
all of them having to earn their living on our five far ms here at Huntley. Among our young stock we
h ave six filhes foaled in 1940 and eight fillies in 1941. Among these are two full sisters out of Jay Farceur; two fine DeMalmaison colts; a fine filly out of Leopold de Knocke; and some dandy yearlings out
of our own LEON FAI\CEUR . If you feel we have something you can use for your herd improvement,
then come and look them over. W e'd rather talk horse than eat, and we're always glad to see folks
interested in Belgians. H untley is about 12 miles northwest of Elgin.

Belgians Demonstrate Pulling Power
-
B ill and Dan, owned and driven by George
Nick, R. D. 4, Erie, Pennsylvania, made up the
winning team of heavyweight division (pairs
over 3,000 pounds) of the National Pulling Contest, held at Syracuse, New York, in August,
1941. This pair pulled the dynamometer, set at
3.200 pounds, fo:~: the full distance of 27'h
feet.
Bill and Dan are b-year-old bay g eldings.
Dan was sired by the Belgian stallion Helda's
Bellmar 17951, which is owned by Great M.
Smith, R. D. 3, Mt. Gilead, Ohio. Bill was
sired by another Belgian stallion. Mr. Nick
purchased Dan from Harley Mace, New Holland, Ohio. He purchased Bill from Mr.
Nickles of Ashley, Ohio.
Dan (near horse) is 16.1%, hands in height
and measures 31lh inches from ground to
floor of chest ; he weighed 1990 pounds. Bill
(off horse) is 17 hands in h eight and measures
32 ~ inches from ground to floor of chest ; he
weighed 2180 pounds.

Ned and Dutch, grade Belgian geldings
owned and driven by Dan Arnold, Plainwe!l,
Michigan, are here shown (right) as they
pulled the dynamometer, set at the load of
3,700 pounds, at the 1941 St. Joseph County
Fair at Centerville, Michigan. This pair, as
well as their driver-owner, are veterans, having
won the 1940 National Pulling Contest at
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with a pull of
3, 750 pounds. They were the high-ranking
team of Michigan contests during 1940.
Ned (near horse) is a bay while Dutch (off
horse) is a sorrel. Together they tip the scales
at from 4,300 to 4,400 pounds during the pulling season.
According to Harry Moxley of Michigan
State College, this veteran Arnold team a nd
the team owned by Fowler Brothers of Reading, Michigan, which never pulled in any
contest prior to 1941, were the outstanding
teams of the 239 heavyweight pairs from 5
states which competed in the dynamometer
pulling contests held in Michigan during 1941.
~
Then at Kalamazoo 4-H Fair, Arnold's pair
pulled 3750 to take the state record. Fowler's
pair did not compete in that contest. At the
last outstanding state contest both teams met
at the Van Buren County Fair. Each team
pulled 377 5 pounds on the dynamometer. The
winner was determined when they set the
load at 4050 and tried for a new world reco rd.
Arnold won this contest with Ned and Dutch,
pulling the load 21 feet, which was 2'h feet
farther than the Fowler pair of Jim and
Prince.
Thus the 1941 Michigan season ended with
these two great teams of Belgian geldings virtually tied for top state and national pulling
honors.
Fowler Brothers• team, Morris Fowler driv~
ing, are here pictured as they were pulling
the dynamometer set at 3700 at the St. Joseph
County Fair.

Prof. Harry Moxley.
-
Jim and Prince, grade Belgian geldings,
owned by Fowler Bros., Reading, Michigan,
and driven here by Morris Fowler, are shown as
they established the present Michigan state
record of 377 5 pounds at the Van Buren
County Fair. Jim (near horse) is a 7-year-old
stra wherry roan. Prince (off horse) is a 6year-old blue roan. They are full brothers.
During the pulling season the weight of this
pair ranged from 3900 to 4010 pounds.
During the 1941 season the Arnold and Fowler teams m et in eight of Michigan's leading
contests. Each team won 4 of these contests.
I n five of the eight contests they finished
first and second. These consistently good and
dependable teams broke the state record four
times during the last two weeks of the season.
At the St. Joseph County Fail· the Fowler
team established a state record of 3700 pounds.
At the Hillsdale County Fair both teams pulled
3725 for a new state record. The winner was
found by trying for a new world record on a
load. of 4050. Fowler won this contest, pulling
this load 19 feet 11 inches, 2 feet more than
the Arnold team.

PERVENCHE 9030. This well·known show and brood mare was twice grand champion
of the International. in 1923 and 1924, and was reserve grand champion at the age of 6 years
in 1927, after she had raised 3 colts. She was foaled on the f arm of the Owosso Sugar Company, Alicia, Michigan, whose Belgian herd was under the direction of Jacob de Geus. P er..
venche was sired by the famous Rubis 8004.
She was sold to Michigan State College as a yearling and was shown by that institution to
all her champions hips. She then became the property of Earle Brown for 4 years, who returned her to her colleg e home in 1932.
Pervenche p r oduced 3 foals at Brooklyn Farm and 6 foals at the college farm, making 9
foals raised and registered up to the date of this publication. Her 1927 filly foal, Ravenche
12218 came along to win reserve grand champion ship at the 1931 International. Others of her
orogeriy have been top prize winners at many leading shows. Prof. R. S . Hudson refers to
Pervenche as the foundation mare of the Michigan State Colleg e Belgian herd. She will be
21 years old on April 11, 1942. Holding this grand old matron in this picture (taken when
Pervenche was 17 years old) is Mr. John Carter, Scottish-born horseman and expert judge
of draft horses, who had charge of the purebred Belgians at Michigan State College for
many years and who now is retired and r esides with Mrs. Carter at Mason, Michigan.

Sixteenth Year of Hoosier Gold Medal Colt Club
Sixteen times in the sixteen years of the Hoosier Gold
Medal Colt Club, a Belgian stallion has won the honor of
highest scoring sire of Gold Medal colts. For the year 1941
this sire proved to be Waterloo Farceur 16379. This 13-year old stallion is a son of the International grand champion
stallion, Oakdale Farceur 12581, and the famous brood mar e,
Civette 3065, mother of 3 International grand champion
mares. Waterloo Farceur won the same honor in 1940. Thus
he won the CONNER TROPHY for his owner, Charles 0.
House, of Arcadia, Hamilton County, who now has achieved
the unequalled record of winning this sterling silver trophy
six times in the last seven years. In the remaining year he
was runner-up in the competition.
Second place honor in this Gold Medal sire competition
also was won by a Belgian stallion, the famous Jay Farceur
17627, owned by H. C. Borneman of Danville, Illinois and
stabled at Kenfleur Farms, Perrysville, Ind 'ana. Fourth
prize honor '*as won by J ay Farceur's f ull brother, Timothy
Farceur, owned by Clifford Eller of Arcadia.
In a strong get-of-sire class of the Gold Medal Colt Division at the 1941 Indiana State F air, Jay Farceur's get
were first and third, the top group being comprised of the
first prize Gold Medal filly, Kenfleur's Shirley Lee, th e second prize filly, Kenfleur's Ruby, and the fir st prize Gold

Belgian Draft Horse Corporation of America has lost,
through death, a number of its former officers, directors,
prominent breeders and staunch friends, during the year
of 1941. Among the first to be called was Eli Sprunger, who
passed away at his home on the banks of the Wabash in
Bluffton, Indiana, and was buried in a country cemetery
within sight of Berne. in his native Wells County.
Born and raised on a farm near Vera Cruz, Indiana.
Eli Sprunger entered the horse business as a young man .
Associated with John M. Frisinger of Decatur, Indiana, Mr.
Sprunger was active in the exportation of commercial horses
to Germany during the depression of the nineties. He made
his first t rip to Germany in September, 1899, remaining seven
weeks. In December of the same year he made a second
trip, staying six months to sell horses which his partner
shipped to him. Then in August, 1900, accompanied by Mrs.
Sprunger, he made his third trip. Returning from this
journey, he brought his first importation of pure-bred Belgian horses. Other trips followed at regular intervals and
he made thirteen trips in all to Belgium.
Eli Sprunger held membership number 69, issued December 3, 1901, in the American Association of Importers
and Breeders of Belgian Draft Horses. He was Vice-President
of the Association xor two terms, in 1909 and again m 1914.
He was President for two success1ve terms in 1910 and 1911.
He served in the office of Director for 29 years, seeing
almost continuous duty in this capacity from December,
1908, until ill health made necessary his retirement in December, 1939.
The firm of Frisinger and Sprunger held membership
number 223 in this organization. Eli in later years was in
partnership with his son in an extensive Belgian breeding
program on a large farm near Saginaw, Michigan.
His ability as a judge of draft horses is indicated by
his serving fifteen times as a judge at the International.
He also j udged at the National Belgian Show in 1927. Among
the prominent Belgians owned by Mr. Sprunger was the
stallion. MARTIN 6332.
His daughter, Florence Sprunger Starr, writes that her
father often remarked to his family, "As long as there are
footprints of man on this earth, there will be hoofprints
of a horse."
Death came quietly to Edwin H. Campbell at the Salem,
Ohio, hospital early last Augu~t, and ended a successful.
self-made career which had earned him many staunch
friends in various walks of life. Born in Midway, Pennsylvania, one of a family of twelve children, "Ed" Campbell
was obliged to forge hJs own way.
Coming to Salem in 1901 to manage the Andalusia Dairy
Company, he was instrumental in enlarging this dairy
uroduct manufacturing :md distributing business and soon
became its president. T.his firm now has large plants in
Salem, Ohio, and Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania
Mr. Campbell was also president of the Supreme Dairy
Company of Alliance. Ohio. He was a charter member of the
Ohio Dairy Products Association and a director of the Cleveland Ice Cream Company.
Appointed to the Ohio State Fair Board by former
Governor A. V. Donahey, Mr. Campbell rendered able service in that office for twelve years. He was serving his fourth
year as Director of Belgian Draft Horse Corporation of
America. His interest in Belgians was a natural outcome
of his use of Belgian geld ings to draw the milk wagons.
The Supreme Dairy Company still has eight good Belgians
at work on the streets of Alliance.
Mr. Campbell bought his first purebred Belgians from
Harvey Kern, Springport, Indiana, in 1929, establishing them
on his beautiful Fieldmore Farm west of Salem, where he
formerly maintained excellent herds of Jersey and then
Guernsey cattle. He owned the mare, Belle de Camille,
16510, reserve junior champion at the 1935 Ohio State Fair,
and the famous old imported Stallion, Sergent 14998.
His son F rederic carries on in the dairy business, but
Mr. Campbell sold all the horses before his illness became
acute. Travelers on Highway 62 will miss the sight of the
sorrels and roans in Fieldmore's blue-grass pasture along
the roadside.
Although not an officer of the Belgian Draft Horse Corporation, Julius Porath was a true friend of the Belgian
horse, and was held in the highest esteem by all draft
horse breeders with whom he rubbed shoulders at the
ring side. Many are the owners and grooms who have visited
with Julius Porath wh1le they sat on bales of straw in the
show barns, and enjoyed his companionship and commonsense conversation.
Following six weeks confinement because of a heart
ailment, Mr. Porath passed away at Ford Hospital in Detroit
on the same day that the great mare, Matilda, from h1s
Water Cress Stock Farm, was chosen grand champion at
the National Belgian Show, so Don McKarns, superintendent of the Porath farm, was denied the warm handclasp
of the "Chief " on that occasion, and again two months
later, when Matilda won her second successive grand champiOnship at t he 1941 Int ernational.
Mr. Por ath was born in Detroit, where he grew up and
where he devoted his entire fife to contracting. He worked
first for his father , who was also a contractor Being the
oldest of seven brothers, Julius later went into business for
himself, registering for his first permit at Detroit City Hall
at the age of 21.
With his son Edward as a partner, the firm b ecame
Julius Porath & Son, operating in ·highway and tunnel
construction, grade separations, and heavy earth moving. At
present this firm is building the huge Ford Bomber Plant
Flying Field.
Julius Porath associated himself with Mr. Healy in 1929,
to form the S . A. Healy Company. This company constructed
Mississippi R iver dams at Davenport, Burlington, and
Quincy; built much of Chicago's I;Jew sewerage system, and
constructed the State, Dearborn, and Lake Street sections
of the new Chicago subway. This Company is now engaged
in construction of t he Columbia River Aqueduct near
New York City, and an auxiliary lock on the Panama
Canal.
Mr. Porath was also President of the Detroit Asphalt
Paving Company. He served two terms as President of the
Michij(an Road Builders Association, and as a director of the
Amencan Road Builders Association.
Like Ed Campbell, Julius Porath became devoted to the
Belgian horse through his use of Belgian work horses in
his business. Before the day of trucks and caterpillar tractors. he maintained a stable of sixty work horses and hired
several hundred teams in addition. He has been successful
in establishing a progressive breeding program with his
purebred Belgians at Northville, Michigan, and this work
will be carried on by his son, Edward.
Following several major operations at the Iowa University Hospital early in 1941, from which complete recovery
was not made, Thomas R. Holbert was obliged to enter a
hospital in San Antonio, Texas, early last fall. There, during
the third operation of a second series, he passed away while
under the anesthetic. He was fifty-seven years old. Tom
Holbert had been associated with the draft horse business
for m•ny years. His father, A . B . Holbert, Imported horses
from Belgium in September of 1889 and continued actively
in the business for many years, serving as president of this
association for three consecutive years. Tom's brother, the
late Ca'ftain Fred B. Holbert, was w idely known on both
sides o the Atlantic and served in the office of president
of this assOCiation for six years, 1923 to 1928 inclusive.
Thomas R. Holbert held membership number 57 In this
association, which was issued on November 25, 1901 , when he
was seventeen years of age. Although educated for the legal
professiOn, Tom Holbert devoted most of his mature years
to the draft horse business, becoming head of the Holbert
Horse Importing Company at Greeley, Iowa, after the death
of his brother, Fred.
According to Tom's brother, L . W . Holbert, 1t is estimated that Tom Holbert made 104 importations of draft
horses from across the Atlantic and that Tom, himself, made
at least 45 tri~s to Belgium to buy horses. For many years
the stallions ImJ?orted by Holbert Horse Importmg Company were promment winners at the National and International and the leading state fairs . The last Importation
made by Tom Holbert was secured by cable order in
August of 1939 and the horses arrived in New York harbor
just a few days before war was declared between Great
Britain and Germany.
Tom Holbert was elected director of this assoc1ation
in December, 1930, and served in that office for seven years.
Many horsemen have been entertained in the spacious
old Holbert residence in Delaware County, Iowa. In the
words of one of those, "when Tom Holbert died, America
lost its number one host."
