  • 224 Mugwump 1916
These are copies of the Mugwump Newspaper for the titled year. These were published on a weekly basis by Paul J Sauer of Slades Corners, Kenosha County, Wisconsin. He began publication when he was 14 years old in September 16, 1892 without a mentor, as a hobby and it continued thru the era of his father's General Store (Paul E) in Slades, thru the era of a cooperative with his brother (Oscar W) and finally thru the era of his ownership. (See 1932 09 08 4 for an image). During a good portion of this time, he was also the Postmaster at Slades and it was located at the store, as was often the case. It was not until the Slades Corners Post Office was closed and the area was serviced by the Burlington Post Office and rates changed that he discontinued the paper. Generally, it was an 11 "x17" page, printed both sides and folder to create 4 pages. Impression for mailing of subscriptions was on the top of the page in rather small lettering. Subscriptions varied but some commentaries number the count at 200. Throughout the years, the cost of a subscription varied and this information is contained within the document in the later years. The pages are not numbers so as to allow for additional pages in the future as issues are found and copied. The figure of this booklet is a generalized amount of pages for gauging of booklet size. The Code at the bottom of the pages represents The Submitter, YYYY MM DD PG/page. Please be aware that there are a few instances in these years that the banner was not changed and year and dates were incorrect. To the best of the ability of the compiler, these have been correct at the bottom of the page. It is suspected that depending on different printer setups, Mr. Sauer had to use different plates and may have forgotten to change the dates. It is known that he had Burlington Standard Press do some of his printing, the reasons unknown but apparently in emergency. As we all know, equipment fails, individuals are ill, etc. There may be duplicates in the document. This is because different qualities of copies from different sources may have presented. We used what we had regardless of quality and added to the collection with additional materials as they arrived. In the end, we hope to have the best there is to offer of this slice of history.
